Phoenix Man Gets In Head-on Collision, Killing 5-Year-Old; Cops Think Alcohol May Have Been a Factor in 8 a.m. Crash

Unfortunately, it looks like yesterday's crash in Phoenix is leading to all three.
If Phoenix police are right on this one, then just about nothing was appropriate inside the sedan that crashed head-on into a Chevrolet truck Monday morning.

Police say a 5-year-old boy in the sedan died in the crash, as cops believe the boy not only was not restrained by a car seat, but wasn't wearing a seat belt at all. And he possibly was in the front seat of the car, too.

To make matters worse, Phoenix police say, the sedan's driver, a 19-year-old man, did not have a driver's license, and alcohol impairment is suspected in the 8 a.m. crash.

In fact, police say none of the three occupants of the sedan was wearing a seat belt, leaving all three injured or worse.

Five-year-old Angel Alvarez died, and his 21-year-old mother sustained "serious injuries" in the crash.

Fan of Tempe Mayoral Candidate Michael Monti Lets the World Know He Plans on Ripping Down Opponent's Signs

If you need an explanation of this photo, consult Back to the Future.
Here's a tip: If you're planning on doing something that may be a crime, don't tell the state's largest paper before doing so.

Apparently our tip is a little late, as it would seem that a fan of Tempe mayoral candidate Michael Monti did that yesterday.

Legislative District 17 Republicans chairman A.J. LaFaro told the Arizona Republic yesterday that he doesn't think signs from a firefighters union endorsing Monti's opponent, Mark Mitchell, are legal.

Therefore, LaFaro informed the Republic, he's rounding up some folks to take them down.

In case you're wondering, taking down campaign signs belonging to someone else is illegal in most cases.

Dudley Chan Says He Plays Cop to "Get Respect," Police Respectfully Arrest Him

Dudley KwokTak Chan, not getting respect.
There's a Rodney Dangerfield joke in here somewhere, but Scottsdale police say Dudley KwokTak Chan was going around pretending he was a Chandler police officer to "get respect."

Getting "respect" for wearing a police badge is typically reserved for actual police officers, so that didn't work out too well for Chan.

According to Scottsdale police, Chan went into an Amtrust Bank on Shea Boulevard on Friday, asking for directions.

Chan apparently thought he'd get better directions if he had a gun on his hip and flashed his badge, informing the bank employees he was a Chandler cop.

Even the teller at the bank thought Chan's badge was fake, so there was a quick call to the real cops with a description of Chan's car.

Matthew Williams Got Drunk and Tried to Pick Fights -- While Wielding a Gun and His Dead Father's MCSO Badge

Matthew Williams Junior
Thirty-four-year-old Matthew Williams got cut off from the booze last night at a Chandler bar after getting into a verbal spat with another bar-goer.

According to court documents obtained by New Times, Williams left the joint after the bartender said she was holding on to his credit card and calling the cops, but Williams decided to come back -- with a gun and his dead father's Maricopa County Sheriff's Office badge.

Williams displayed the badge and gun in an attempt to get his card back, but the bar staff just told him they were calling the cops again.

He then got into an argument with someone at a Little Caesars Pizza because the guy "yelled at his dog."

When the guy told Williams he probably shouldn't have a gun, police say he said something similar to "I have a badge, too," showing off the badge belonging to his father, a former sheriff's deputy.

Elissa Mullany and Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon
Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon has reportedly pulled today's City Council's agenda his recommendation to appoint his girlfriend, Elissa Mullany, to the Phoenix Aviation Advisory Board.

Gordon wanted to appoint her to the aviation board to replace Art Hamilton, whose four-year term is expiring in December.

The recommendation -- as with all appointments to city boards and commissions -- would have had to make it past the rest of the Phoenix City Council.

Chandler City Hall: Don't Drink From Toilets

toilethead.jpg

This type of behavior will not be tolerated at the new Chandler City Hall.
If you see a toilet in Chandler's new City Hall, fight the urge and don't drink from it. Seems fairly obvious, but if you forget, the city's been kind enough to post signs as a reminder.

In almost every bathroom in the new, uber-"green" facility are signs saying "Urinals and Toilets are served with gray water. Do Not Drink."

Check out a photo of the new signs -- compliments of Arizona IndyMedia -- after the jump
