Joshua Silverman: 49th Arizona Soldier to Die in Afghanistan

Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 Joshua Silverman, a 35-year-old from Scottsdale, was one of six soldiers who died in a helicopter crash this week in Afghanistan, according to the Defense Department.

Silverman is the 49th Arizonan to die in Afghanistan under "Operation Enduring Freedom."

Last week, 30-year-old Phoenix native Eric Harroun faced a possible sentence of life in prison after the Justice Department accused him of fighting in Syria on behalf of Al-Qaeda.

Amid doubt about those allegations, Harroun suddenly agreed to a plea deal yesterday, and his sentence is quite a bit shorter than life in prison -- he'll be released from jail, be placed on probation for three years, and has to pay a $100 fine.

While politicians like President Obama and Senator John McCain continue to call for military action against the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, an Army veteran remains in jail for fighting against the same regime.

Eric Harroun, a 30-year-old Phoenix native, faces life in prison for allegedly providing material support to a terrorist organization and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction -- charges he was indicted on in June, before there were public calls for American military action in Syria.

Again, Harroun and the U.S. government list the same enemy, but Harroun's looking at life in prison.

Arizonans Don't Want Military Action in Syria, According to Poll

Despite the actions of Republican Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake, their constituents oppose military action in Syria, according to poll results.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted yesterday to pass a resolution that would authorize a military strike against Syria, and both McCain and Flake, who are on that committee, voted in favor of the resolution.

Jonam Russell: 48th Arizona Soldier to Die in Afghanistan

Army First Lieutenant Jonam Russell, a 25-year-old from Cornville, was killed in Afghanistan earlier this week along with two others after they were attacked with an improvised explosive device, according to the Defense Department.

Russell is the 48th Arizona soldier to die in Afghanistan under "Operation Enduring Freedom."
