A fire gutted a downtown Tempe home over the weekend, injuring three firefighters and blowing the front door of the house about 25 feet onto Mill Avenue.

The blaze started around 10:40 p.m. Saturday at 1204 South Mill Avenue -- across from ASU and just south of the bars.

We happened to be in the area at the time and  snapped some cell-phone-quality photos for our devoted Valley Fever readers.

Check out the pics after the jump.

The giant balloon dam pooling the Salt River into Tempe Town Lake burst last night, sending 750 million gallons of water downstream. Last night we brought you photos of the immediate aftermath.

Today, we received three photos taken from the seventh floor of the Hayden Ferry building that help put things in scale. Click them, and they get giant.

See more after the jump.

Convertible Fail: Guy Apparently Tries Turning Mini-Van Into Convertible -- Or Pickup Truck (We Can't Tell)

Categories: Picture This
fail.jpg

We were driving down Seventh Street in downtown Phoenix yesterday when we spotted this four-wheeled freak show (pictured below) heading north near Thomas.

Apparently, the owner of this hoopty no longer needed the space and convenience of his Chevy Lumina mini-van, and opted to shed his soccer dad image by converting it into either a convertible or a pickup truck -- we can't decide what the ultimate goal of the conversion was, but the end result was far less cool than other automotive transformations we've seen (Delorean/time machine instantly comes to mind).

Check it out below.

Dumpy, Old Trailer Converted into Domestic Violence Exhibit; Seems to Make Sense

James King
We bumped into this local treasure while driving through Guadalupe this morning. Because the trailer is in a fairly residential area, at first glance, we thought it was some guy advertising that he beat his wife and wanted people to come watch -- as long as they made an appointment first.

We were wrong (we think).

Photo-Radar Renegade Gets Caught Driving Alone With Head Out Sunroof

Smile for the camera numbnuts.

A Chandler man was arrested today for doing one of the most inexplicably stupid things we've ever seen: speeding down the highway with half his body out the sunroof of his car in a county renowned for its use of photo radar.

He wasn't even wearing a monkey mask, like a previous speedster looking to laugh in the face of the law.

Department of Public Safety officers nabbed 25-year-old Richard Anthony Flores Jr.on two counts of reckless driving and one count of criminal speeding after he had his photo snapped by several speed cameras as he drove down the U.S. 60 at Alma School Drive.

DPS officials say Flores was driving his car at 90 miles per hour in a 65 m.p.h. zone the first time he had his photo taken, and was driving above the posted speed limit while -- as you can see in the above photo -- standing through his sunroof.

Ten Random Thoughts as the Oughts (2000-2009) Fade Away

The following are 10 random things that, at the start of this weird decade, we never would have believed:

romley.jpg
1. That the historically pathetic Arizona Cardinals would move out to bumfuck Egypt (a.k.a. Glendale, a.k.a. sweet deal), and then would (at the end of the decade) find themselves exactly one play from winning the damned Super Bowl.

2. That Rick Romley, the conservative and often-maligned (by New Times, anyway) Maricopa County Attorney for 16 years would look like a saint (metaphorically, i.e. that's Romley in the photo) in comparison to his successor, the zealot Andrew Peyton Thomas.

3. That Bobby Khan, a semi-wild and crazy guy we met when he was working as a grunt firefighter at Station 21, in south Phoenix, would become the chief -- and a good one -- of the nation's fifth-largest city.

4. That an insignificant minor-league bully named Russell Pearce would finagle his way into such a powerful position in the Arizona Legislature.

5. That light rail actually would happen, and be pretty flippin' cool.

Giant Earthmovers Make Wide Load on McDowell Road; Caterpillar Trucks on Way to California

wide load 1 sized.jpg

This is our through-the-windshield shot of a gigantic earthmover being escorted by DPS cruisers this morning going west on McDowell Road. The wheels of the vehicle probably needed a wide-load sign themselves.

We caught up to the procession ahead of us to take this shot, observing as the tractor-trailer's driver moved into oncoming lanes (cleared by the state troopers) to avoid taking out the overhanging streetlights. A similarly escorted load had driven by moments earlier.

"The Shops at Noterra" Seeks Models for Advertising Campaign; No Pay, But You Keep Photos

shoppers noterra shopping.jpg
Hey, good-lookin' -- be a model for a fancy strip mall in the North Valley.

The Shops at Noterra, which opened in 2006 near Interstate 17 and Happy Valley Road, will hold an open casting call from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 28 for models to be photographed for an upcoming ad campaign. The Shops' news release says the center is looking for a diverse range of men, women and children (though the folks in this Noterra Web site picture are kind of milquetoast) and even some "retired couples," (which seems like code for sexy senior citizens).

No money is being offered, but aspiring models can use the experience as a career stepping-stone.

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition 2009 Includes Phoenix Suns Dancer and Danica Patrick

Categories: Picture This
oberg kayla.jpg
The new Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition out today features local Phoenix Suns dancer Kayla Oberg and Indy-Car-Queen Danica Patrick of Scottsdale.

That's Oberg on the right. Her bio on the site says she's a 22-year-old make-up artist from Gilbert -- dispelling any notion the town is just a boring Mormonville.

This is the second splash into the Swimsuit Edition by Patrick (below). Suffice to say, she's outdone herself.

Janet Napolitano Less Than Photogenic on Homeland Security Web Site Mug Shot

napolitano janet goofy.jpg
Janet, we thought we knew ya!

At least, we've certainly seen better pictures of the former Arizona governor than this goofy mug shot placed recently on the Homeland Security Web site about her, the department's new boss.

It almost appears that once she landed in Washington D.C., she must have been replaced by an overly dimpled, aging space alien with big teeth. Was this photo shoot really the best our government could do?

C'mon, girl, take some pride in yourself! Get a new picture up there!

Maybe cornball mugs are the standard at Homeland Security -- check out the dorky shot of Napolitano's right-hand man, the department's deputy secretary, Paul Schneider:
