ASU Climbs Back to the Bottom, Ranks 17th in Princeton Reviews' Top 20 Party Schools

It appears that Arizona State University students are just drunk enough to somewhat impress the folks at the Princeton Review.

ASU ranked number 17 this year in the publication's list of top party schools in the nation, which is an improvement from last year's ranking of... oh wait, the Sun Devils didn't even make the list last year.

Sandwiched between the en-mass rioting of the University of Maryland at No. 16 and the Hoosiers of Indiana University at No. 18, the Sun Devils were cited for their fraternity and sorority scene, as well as their more than adept marijuana smoking abilities (ASU was also ranked 17th on Princeton Review's "Reefer Madness" poll).

Ohio University, University of Georgia, and the University of Mississippi rounded out the top three spots on the list.

Excluding last year, ASU was a regular bottom feeder of the Princeton Review list, boasting a ranking of 17th in 2008 and 20th in 2009.

And this year is no different.

Joe Arpaio Pal Thayer Verschoor to Take Over for Brett Mecum as AZ GOP's Executive Director, Sources Say

Thayer Verschoor
With the ouster of now-former Executive Director of the Arizona Republican Party Brett Mecum, Thayer Verschoor, a veteran of the Arizona Legislature and short-lived communications director for the AZ GOP, is getting a promotion.

Sources tell New Times Verschoor has been slated to take over for Mecum as executive director of Arizona's dysfunctional Republican Party.

Following a failed attempt to get elected treasurer of Arizona, Verschoor took the gig as communications director. He's been Party Chairman Tom Morrissey's number one cheerleader ever since. Click here to see a gushing email Verschoor recently sent out in regards to his main man Morrissey.

Brett Mecum Gets the Boot From Position as Arizona GOP's Executive Director, Sources Say

The Arizona GOP apparently has had enough of Brett Mecum, a.k.a. Captain Fellatio (pictured above).
Brett Mecum, the now-former executive director of the Arizona Republican Party, has been given the ax by the state GOP, multiple sources within the Party confirm to New Times.

Frankly, we're shocked. Not that Mecum got canned, but that it took as long as it did given his long list of questionable extracurricular activities while serving as a Republican Party big-whig.

For anyone in the dark about Mecum's alleged misdeeds, they involve a simulated superhero blowjob, being "creepy around women," allegedly selling political endorsements, and apparently disregarding posted speed limits on a Valley highway (we'll get into all that later).

Brett Mecum, Arizona Republican Party Big-Wig Described as "Creepy Around Women," Named One of Phoenix Business Journal's "40 Under 40." WTF?

Categories: Party On, WTF

According to the Phoenix Business Journal, the guy dressed like a super hero is one of the "best young leaders in Phoenix."
The Phoenix Business Journal recently released its coveted "40 Under 40" list. To quote Clark W. Griswold, we could wake up tomorrow with our heads sewn to the carpet and we wouldn't be more surprised than we were when we saw the name of Arizona Republican Party Executive Director Brett Mecum on the list.

The PBJ bills the award as the "premier program honoring the best young leaders in the Phoenix metro market."

Anyone who recalls some of Mecum's antics over the past few years knows the only place he's likely to lead anyone is the police on a high-speed chase down the Loop 101.

Mecum got popped in 2009 for driving his blue 2008 Shelby GT 500 Ford Mustang 109 miles per hour down the Loop 101 at 12:30 in the morning. The posted speed limit is 65 m.p.h.

That's nothin' compared to some of the other less-than-reputable things for which one of Phoenix's "best young leaders" made headlines.More >>

Mark Spinks, Former Congressional Candidate/Neighborhood Nudist, to Be Axed From "Consulting" Post at Arizona GOP, Sources Say

Mark Spinks (fully clothed)
Former Congressional candidate Mark Spinks is a big fan of state Republican Party Chairman Tom Morrissey. In fact, he recently sent a scathing e-mail to those looking to get the chairman booted from his post (we got a copy of it, which you can see below). However, sources tell New Times Morrissey's not returning the love and plans to ax Spinks from his "consulting" position with the party.

Morrissey, as we pointed out yesterday, is under fire from several factions within the party. A recall effort is set to begin Sunday, during which, sources tell New Times, "A lot of the dirty laundry in the GOP will be thrown out in the front yard come Monday morning."

In an e-mail to the chairman's haters, Spinks -- who pleaded no contest in 2005 to charges that he stared down one of his neighbors while standing completely naked in his open Awhatukee garage -- stands by his man Morrissey and calls those who oppose his leader "pathetic and pitiful children."

New Times was forwarded a copy of the e-mail. Check it out below.

Republican Party Chairman Tom Morrissey's GOP Headquarters Heating Up -- and it's Not Just the Broken Air Conditioner

Categories: Party On

Some GOPers aren't happy with newly elected state Republican Party Chairman Tom Morrissey.
The air conditioning at Arizona's Republican Party headquarters is broken, it's been broken, and it may be a while until it's fixed. But it's not just the temperature that's heating up within the state's Grand Old Party.

Sources tell New Times several groups within the party aren't thrilled with recently elected Party Chairman Tom Morrissey, and are about to start making moves to have him ousted as the leader of the party.

"Morrissey has been approached by several groups already asking for his resignation, but that's about to intensify dramatically in the coming week," our source says. "If he doesn't leave by Sunday a lot of the dirty laundry in the GOP will be thrown out in the front yard come Monday morning."

Morrissey did not respond to New Times request for comment.

Arizona Republic Thinks Arizona Dems Owe Jan Brewer a Thank You for Vetoing Humiliating "Birther Bill"

Categories: Party On

The Arizona Republic thinks Democratic Party Chairman Andrei Cherny owes Jan Brewer a thank you.
Usually, common sense and rational decision making is expected from elected officials -- unless you're the Arizona Republic's editorial board. If that's the case, gratitude apparently is required for someone who is simply not a lunatic in a position of power.

Given the number of nut-jobs running the asylum in Arizona, perhaps the Republic's right -- acknowledging sanity might inspire more of it --  but Arizona Democratic Party Chairman Andrei Cherny disagrees with the idea that elected leaders should be thanked for using common sense.

Last week, Arizona's paper of record penned a piece bashing Arizona Democrats for not thanking Governor Jan Brewer after she vetoed the "Birther Bill."

ASU Climbs Back Into the Upper Echelon of Playboy's Top Party School Ranking

After a four-year hiatus from the top five of Playboy's annual party school ranking, Arizona State University is back in its old form for 2011.

ASU placed third in the magazine's annual list of party schools for 2011, improving in rank from number 6 in 2010 and 15th in 2009, while getting snubbed from the rankings in 2007 and 2008.

The University of Colorado at Boulder took the top spot in this year's rankings, largely 'cause of the student body's penchant for marijuana and the plethora of nearby ski resorts, according to Playboy.

Arizona State University One of Playboy's Top Party Schools Again

After a brief fall from grace, thanks -- in part -- to Arizona State University President Michael Crow's ruthless crusade against fun under the disguise of "The New American University," the Sun Devils are back in Playboy magazine's list of top-10 party schools in the country.

According to Playboy's new rankings, released in the magazine's May 2010 issue, ASU is now number 6 on the list.

There was some serious concern that ASU's party-school status was a thing of the past after falling to 15th in last year's rankings, and not even making the list in 2007 or 2008.

Students we spoke to a few months ago blamed Crow, calling his policies acts of "douche-baggery." They even created a Facebook group called "Make ASU Playboy's Top Party School."

One student we spoke to, Chelsea Frank, told us that she's considering leaving the university unless the party scene starts to match her expectations.

Arizona House Panel Okays Bill Relaxing Sunday-Morning Booze Rules

Categories: Party On

If you've ever found yourself in the nightmare scenario of not being able to drink yourself into a stupor before 10 a.m. on a Sunday, you may be in luck. A state House panel just approved a bill that would allow booze-hounds to get their fix a little earlier on Sundays.

As it stands right now, if you want alcohol on a Sunday in Arizona, you have to wait until 10 a.m.

Sounds reasonable, but for some of state Representative Matt Heinz's Tucson constituents, they want to get the party rollin' a little earlier.

Heinz sponsored HB 2552, in response to some constituent complaints that they weren't able to purchase alcohol in the morning for a party they were throwing later in the day.

It should be noted that much of Heinz's district covers areas of Tucson with a high population of University of Arizona students. Our only question is whether these "constituents" were wearing togas when they brought their alcoholic plight to the representative's attention
