Last Minute Thursday: Brian Posehn at Tempe Improv

Categories: Last Minute

If Wikipedia is to be believed, Brian Posehn was born on July 6, 1966. His height is 6'6".

brianp.jpgI may be making a hypothesis here, but is it possible that this funny man owes his career of appearances on just about every sitcom from Seinfeld to The Sarah Silverman Program to the dark lord?

Find out for yourself (if you dare) when this comedian takes the stage at Tempe Improv at 8 p.m.

I wonder why they didn't schedule him at 6 p.m.

Last Minute Wednesday: Wii Bowling at Heather's Wild Hare

Categories: Last Minute

By Jonathan McNamara

Here's the secret to Nintendo's Wii bowling: you don't have to stand up. Trust me. You can sit on a barstool with one hand firmly clasped around a bottle of your choice while you lob virtual balls down a virtual lane and experience the thrill of a virtual crash.

wiibowl.jpg

Thanks to Heather's Wile Hare, you can do all this with the chance of winning a fair pot of cash. Every Wednesday at 9 p.m., the bar hosts a Wii Bowling tournament with a $5 buy-in. The jackpot goes to the couch jockey with the most Wii-mote finesse.

Think you've got what it takes? Press A + B and find out.

Last Minute Monday: Human & Animal Grossology

So you've sacrificed another Memorial Day weekend's worth of dogs and burgers to the porcelain god. Why not make Memorial Day a little more memorable by learning about your crap? Do you know how much scat can tell us about the animals that excreted it? How would you like to race against fellow fecal fanatics by rolling a ball of dung?

gross.jpg

Human & Animal Grossology at Arizona Science Center will avail you the opportunity to learn more about excrement and several other bodily processes daily through September 1. Make a cartoon character burp by pouring soda down its gob. Learn more about the dining habits of mosquitos and leeches.

Who says science can't be disgustingly fun?

For more on Human & Animal Grossology, read Ooze of the World by Julie Peterson.

Last Minute Wednesday: 80s Movie Night at The Rose & Crown Pub

Categories: Last Minute

What goes great with fish and chips? Well it’s not the answer I was looking for, but you’re right, malt vinegar is a pretty good. Yes, yes mushy peas go pretty well too. You do have a good point about the curry sauce…

Look, the point I was trying to make is that 80s movies go great with fish and chips. Oh, you don’t get it? Well, never mind.

breakfastclub.jpg

If you’re looking for an place to catch an 80s flick while eating deep-fried cod (there’s got to be some of you out there), The Rose & Crown Pub is your place tonight starting at 8:00 p.m.

Last Minute Tuesday: The Wedding Singer

Categories: Last Minute

By Jonathan McNamara

Adam Sandler did not appear in the original 2006 musical version of The Wedding Singer. Stephen Lynch did. What better replacement? The producers swapped one comedic song-writing star for another.

adam.jpg
Neither Lynch nor Sandler will be appearing in tonight's opening show for The Wedding Singer at Gammage Auditorium. I don't know about you, but I find that a bit relieving. I mean I laughed the first time I heard Sandler's Hanukkah song and I nearly wet myself (with guilt) the first time I heard Lynch's "Special Fred," but with those two out of the mix there's a chance that the lead might actually be someone who can sing.

See for yourself tonight at Gammage Auditorium at 7:30p.m. For more on The Wedding Singer see Hail Marry by Robrt Pela.

Last Minute Monday: Walking on Dry Land: Mayme Kratz at the Desert Botanical Garden

Categories: Last Minute

By Jonathan McNamara

I just checked weather.com and it's 102 degrees. Face it, your chances for communing with nature are growing slimmer by the second.

Before the summer sun banishes you to an air-conditioned existence, take this chance to visit the Desert Botanical Garden. Tonight the garden will feature an art exhibit called Walking on Dry Land by Mayme Kratz made entirely out of organic materials.

The garden is open daily until 8p.m. from May through September. Walking on Dry Land is on display daily until 5 p.m. through May 30. For more information, see the Desert Botanical Garden's Web site.

Last Minute Thursday: Apocalyptica

Categories: Last Minute

Don't get me wrong, I understand how technically proficient the members of Apocalyptica are. As musicians go they're extremely talented, but their true genius, I believe, lies not in their skill but in their decision.

apocalyptica.jpg

Think about it: Metallica covers on trombone? That's a bit depressing, isn't it? How about oboe? Interesting, but not quite right. Metallica covers on a theremin? Creepy.

Celebrate them for their Metallica covers. Celebrate them for their original songs. Celebrate that they're playing tonight at The Marquee starting at 6:30 p.m. Just don't forget to celebrate their decision to do all of this on cello.
