Out of all 50 states, there's no state where kids are dropping out of high school at a higher rate than Arizona.

That's according to a report on graduation and dropout rates released today by the National Center for Education Statistics, which is part of the U.S. Department of Education.

We just took a look at perhaps the most morbid report we've seen this year, with about 100 pages detailing how children died in Arizona in 2011.

The Arizona Child Fatality Review Program released its 19th annual report today, and it includes a whole lot of statistics and trends, including the fact that child deaths decreased from 2010 to 2011, but child suicides and homicides went up.

Sun City mom Brittany Cramer found one of the more interesting ways to get pegged with child-abuse charges -- getting a Taser blast from the cops too close to her children.

This incident stemmed from a traffic stop by Glendale police on Tuesday, as Cramer's husband David had a felony warrant for his arrest.

According to court documents obtained by New Times, Brittany Cramer, 25, refused to comply with the cops' orders to put her hands up and get out of the car, as her husband "tried to push his way out of unmarked police vehicles."

Think of the children.
Believe it or not, a national group that promotes the welfare of children believes Arizona's not the greatest place for kids.

Arizona ranks 46th out of the 50 states in child well-being, according to Kids Count, a project of the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

That ranking's based on a few groups of indicators, including economic well-being, education, health, and family. Arizona sucks at just about all of 'em.

Colorado City Now Has Cops That Enforce Arizona Laws Instead of a Child Rapist's Laws

Mohave County Sheriff Tom Sheahan and his deputies are now patrolling Colorado City, since the Warren Jeffs kiss-asses who were supposed to be policing the town just couldn't seem to enforce state laws.

Colorado City, the spot on the Utah/Arizona border that the child-rapist Jeffs used to call home -- and remains the home to members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints -- was previously patrolled only by the "Marshal's Office," which is believed to be loyal to Jeffs instead of the law.

That belief has been a focus of Attorney General Tom Horne for quite some time, and recently became the focus of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, which alleges -- in part -- that the "Marshal's Office" does its policing on the basis of FLDS law, instead of enforcing actual laws.

Arizona High Schoolers Beat the National Average (in Cocaine, Meth, and Steroid Use)

According to the federal government, Arizona's high school kids are above average -- in drug and alcohol use.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released its annual report yesterday on "risk behavior" in high school students, and there's not a single category related to drugs or alcohol that Arizona kiddos are doing at a rate less than the national average.

In fact, in eight of the 20 categories, the Arizona kids come out on top.

Tom Horne Sending Cash to Mohave County Sheriff's Office to Patrol Colorado City

Thumbnail image for coloradocity.jpg
The Arizona Legislature didn't really feel the need to replace the police force in Colorado City with deputies from the Mohave County Sheriff's Office, so Attorney General Tom Horne's pulling out Plan B.

The AG's office announced today that it's sending $420,000 to the Sheriff's Office for overtime pay to patrol the city, on top of the Warren Jeffs kiss-asses that are supposed to be policing the town.

Colorado City, the spot on the Utah/Arizona border that the child-rapist Jeffs used to call home -- and remains the home to members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints -- currently is patrolled by marshals whom Horne believes are loyal to Jeffs instead of the law.

Tom Horne's Effort to Get Rid of FLDS-Lovin' Cops in Colorado City Killed in Legislature

coloradocity.jpg
Attorney General Tom Horne's efforts to replace the police force in Colorado City with deputies from the Mohave County Sheriff's Office was killed in the state House yesterday, which turned out to be the last day of the legislative session.

Colorado City, for those joining late, is the city on the Utah/Arizona border that child rapist Warren Jeffs used to call home, and remains the home to members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Horne pushed the bill to legislators, contending that the cops there -- often referred to as the "Marshalls" -- were way too sympathetic to polygamists and friends of Jeffs.

"Numerous cases have been documented where the 'Marshalls' refuse to investigate serious crimes against the property and persons of 'apostates' or other non followers of Warren Jeffs, when the perpetrators were followers of Mr. Jeffs," the AG's office said in February. "The 'Marshalls' have also prevented enforcement of court orders with respect who can occupy land. When a court appointed official came to Colorado City to enforce court orders, the Chief of Police pulled him over and threatened to arrest him for criminal trespass if he attempted to enforce court orders, as opposed to the desires of the FLDS Church."

Bill Montgomery Announces His Plans for "National Get High Day" -- Free Drug Tests!

Maricopa County Attorney Bill the Buzzkill Montgomery announced today that he's trying to help try to prevent kids from getting stoned out of their minds on April 20 -- "420," as it's known to those with red eyes and the munchies.

The date has been described as a "counterculture holiday," in which fans of marijuana toke up in celebration, or protest, or something like that, man.

Montgomery, staying consistent with his morality policing (see: porn actors "may be guilty of...prostitution."), announced that he'll be joining others on April 19 to "help raise awareness about the dangers of experimenting with illegal drugs" in advance of the 20th, referred to as "National Get High Day."

That event will include free drug tests to parents thanks to First Check and notMYkid, a combo you may remember from Steve Moak's 2010 congressional bid.

Is it Really "Insulting" for Arizona's House Republicans to Keep Pictures of Latino Kids on Their Desks?

One of the allegedly "insulting" pictures.
Democratic State Senator Steve Gallardo was none to pleased when he saw some Republican House members were keeping pictures of Latino kids on their desks, symbols of the state's school-choice program.

Gallardo told New Times yesterday it was "insulting" for these House Republicans to have the pictures up, as he claimed -- among other things -- that the school-choice program isn't actually too beneficial for needy Latino kids.

"The fact is that [Arizona's Republican legislators] have done more to hurt the Hispanic community in last 10 years than any other group of elected officials," Gallardo said.

Republican State Representative Steve Montenegro, on the other hand, said most of the kids who benefit from the program are Latinos.
