At least this Darin Pastor guy didn't get anybody's hopes up.

Pastor, the latest person to announce that he's buying the orphaned Phoenix Coyotes, is the latest person to fail at buying the Phoenix Coyotes, just like every other potential buyer over the last 3 1/2 years.

The average attendance at Phoenix Coyotes games was higher this year than it has been since the 2008-2009 season.

Unfortunately for the Coyotes, that doesn't mean much -- Long Island is the only place in North America with an NHL team where fans show up in smaller numbers.

Mikkel Boedker's struggle to find Phoenix.
If ABC 15 is doing something right these days, it's having local athletes do the weather report.

First, it was Charles Barkley -- who asked, "When the rain gon' stop?" -- but now it's Phoenix Coyotes forward Mikkel Boedker, who provided perhaps the best weather report in Phoenix history, starting off with a lengthy struggle to locate Phoenix on the map.

After just four games in this season, the average attendance for Phoenix Coyotes home games has already reached last in the National Hockey League.

From the "better late than never" department, the National Hockey League is a functioning thing again, and a 48-game schedule has been created for each team this season.

The season was supposed to start a few months ago, but the whole lockout debacle messed that up completely, so the Phoenix Coyotes' first game of the season will now be on Saturday, against the Dallas Stars in Dallas.

Here's the state of pro sports in the Valley: baseball's in the middle of the off-season, the Phoenix Suns have already found the basement of their division, the Arizona Cardinals totally suck, and the Phoenix Coyotes don't even get to play.

We can further explain that last part: the NHL announced today that it's canceled all of the games through December 30 -- the eighth such cancellation this year, if you include the preseason and the Winter Classic.

As has been the word about the Phoenix Coyotes for some time, it's pretty likely that the team will be called the "Arizona Coyotes," since, you know, it's been almost a decade since the Coyotes played in Phoenix.

The change in the name was in the early drafts of the arena lease between Glendale and hopeful Coyotes buyer Greg Jamison -- a lease the city council just recently approved -- and to be clear, a Coyotes executive says it's probably going to happen.

The NHL season's still fading away, as the league announced today that the games have been canceled through November 30.

For the Phoenix Coyotes, that's 20 games -- half of them home games -- that have been lost this season because the NHL Players' Association and the NHL can't reach a collective-bargaining agreement, with the most prominent disagreement being how to divvy up the cash between the two sides.
