Daniel Patterson Calls it Quits, Resigns From House

Former state Representative Daniel Patterson.
State Representative Daniel Patterson resigned from the House today, before a vote on his expulsion could take place.

The House Ethics Committee unanimously voted this morning to boot Patterson, which was apparently enough of an indication for Patterson to just take off early.

"I have been forced to resign due to the fact that the House has become a very hostile work environment for me," Patterson says in his resignation letter. "Due to this I am no longer able to serve my constituents in the way they deserve."

Patterson's resignation takes place just a day after he issued a 19-page response to the investigation into allegations of wide-ranging misconduct, as Patterson addressed every single accusation in the report point-by-point.

Among other things, the report -- done on behalf of the ethics committee -- claimed Patterson routinely ignored House rules, "verbally abuses, assaults, and harasses" a bunch of people at the Capitol, is possibly violating court orders, may have written a Facebook post under the name of an ex-girlfriend to recant a domestic-violence claim made against him, and tried to trade sex for his vote on a bill.

Andrew Thomas: a (Not So) Fond Look Back at a Demagogue in the Making

Portrait of Andrew Peyton Thomas by artist Douglas Boehm
Back in August 2005, with Andrew Peyton Thomas then on the cusp of election as Maricopa County Attorney, we profiled him in a not-so-kind piece entitled "Dangerous Mind."

The tag beneath the headline read, "Imagine Joe Arpaio as a dewy intellectual, and you've got County Attorney wanna-be Andy Thomas."

"In his cruel and unusual 1994 book Crime and the Sacking of America: The Roots of Chaos, Maricopa County Attorney hopeful Andrew Peyton Thomas wrote this:

"By publicly incarcerating drug dealers and other criminals, displaying them before their neighbors in large, open-air holding pens with their names and crimes prominently displayed, a modified stockade program could provide specific deterrence at marginal cost and general deterrence for the community."

Daniel Patterson's Political Career Lives Another Day; His Response to Report Due Next Week

Rep._Patterson_2011.jpg
State Representative Daniel Patterson
After reading the investigation done on behalf of the House Ethics Committee, a handful of legislators were ready to punt state Representative Daniel Patterson out of the House today, but that didn't happen.

Among several other things in the report released yesterday, investigators claim Patterson routinely ignores House rules, "verbally abuses, assaults, and harasses" a bunch of people at the Capitol, is possibly violating court orders, may have written that odd Facebook post under his ex-girlfriend's name, has offered to trade sex for his vote on a bill, and for some reason, the report also notes Patterson may "frequently" smoke weed.

Nobody came out and said it, but some legislators were acting as if they expected Patterson to show up to the Capitol today and go postal -- he did neither -- as a few lawmakers were reportedly packing heat, while House Minority Leader Chad Campbell made a few references today about safety at the Capitol.

A motion to vote on Patterson's expulsion was rejected, meaning Patterson actually gets a chance to respond to the report.

Ethics Investigators: Daniel Patterson Is Rude, Has Tried to Trade Favors for Votes, Violated Court Orders, and Has Got to Go

The video above (language probably not safe for work) seems to be very similar to what was released today in a report on Democratic state Representative Daniel Patterson.

What everyone assumed was a ethics complaint filed over domestic-violence allegations against Patterson has turned out to be much, much more.

Simply, the investigation done on behalf of the House Ethics Committee recommends Patterson be expelled from the House.

Among other things, the report claims Patterson routinely ignores House rules, "verbally abuses, assaults, and harasses" a bunch of people at the Capitol, is possibly violating court orders, may have written that odd Facebook post under his ex-girlfriend's name, has tried to trade personal favors for votes on bills, and for some reason, the report also notes Patterson may "frequently" smoke weed.

Qikai "Ben" Chen Pleads Not Guilty to Felony Child Abuse; Basis Charter School Boots Its Former Teacher

Qikai "Ben" Chen has been indicted for felony child abuse. He's also lost his job as a math teacher at Scottsdale's Basis Charter School.
Qikai "Ben" Chen, a former math teacher at Scottsdale's Basis Charter School, pleaded not guilty today to a felony charge of child abuse.

The arraignment comes after a second arrest for Chen following an indictment, and also after his former employer gave the alleged child-beater the boot.

Chen, if you'll recall from our April 21 blog post, reportedly admitted to police that he bashed the face of his boyfriend's 6-year-old daughter after she woke him up from a nap. The boyfriend was out of town.

The case began after the girl showed up at her Chandler elementary school with "significant bruising" on her face. Child Protective Services got involved, then the police. Chen was arrested after he confessed to having shoved the tyke's head into a metal door hinge -- twice.
