Canadian Mounties Cancel Training Trip With MCSO Because Joe Arpaio Racially Profiles People

canadians.jpg
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police apparently didn't get the memo -- Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio only racially profiles people from south of the border...

Nevertheless, the RCMP confirms to New Times that it has canceled plans to have several mounties train with MCSO deputies because of the scathing Department of Justice report on the MCSO's alleged racial-profiling practices under the leadership of Arpaio, America's priciest sheriff.

Get the details of the DOJ report here.

The RCMP had planned on sending several mounties to Phoenix to train with the MCSO's Drug Recognition Unit, a specialized group of deputies trained in identifying what drugs a motorist might be under the influence of during a traffic stop.

Tempe Police Department
David McMillan was last seen early Monday morning in Tempe.
A Canadian man was only supposed to be in the Valley for a "short visit." He was supposed to head back to Canada on Monday, but he apparently didn't -- and now he's missing.

David James McMillan, 35, of Vancouver, British Columbia, was staying with friends in the 3500 block of South McClintock Drive, which is where he was last seen early Monday, about 1:30 a.m.

According to the Tempe Police Department, McMillan left his ID at his friend's home, and does not have access to a vehicle.

Law enforcement agencies across the state, as well as the Canadian consulate, have been notified that McMillan is missing.

Former Calgary Flames Forward Brett Sutter Pleads Guilty to Disorderly Conduct After Attacking Scottsdale Cabby

Brett Sutter
Former Calgary Flames (that's a hockey team, Zonies) forward Brett Sutter pleaded guilty yesterday to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct for attacking a Scottsdale cab driver -- for no apparent reason -- last year.

Initially, Sutter, 24, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor assault.

Sutter and the Flames were in town in November to play the Phoenix Coyotes, and Sutter used some of his down time following the game to go partying in Scottsdale.

According to the incident report, Sutter was at American Junkie, where bouncers say he "was acting up all night."

As he left the bar, witnesses say he walked past a cab driver waiting outside and punched him in the face.

Steve Nash to Vancouver Following Stanley Cup Loss: "Please Stop Burning S**T"

Steve Nash to Canadians: stop burning shit.
Phoenix Suns star Steve Nash isn't the prime minister of Canada (yet), but he still did his part to get hooligans to stop trashing a Canadian city following the Vancouver Canucks' game-seven loss in the Stanley Cup Finals last night.

The Canucks were crushed by the Boston Bruins 4-0 to conclude a great series. Following the game, fans took a page out of the book of Boston sports fans and rioted.

The difference, however, is Canuck fans rioted when they lost. Bostonians just riot -- even when they win.

Canada to Blame for Filling Valley With Smoke

canadians.jpg
If you drove to work this morning thinking the Valley looks hazier than usual, you're right -- and Canada's to blame.

Mark Shaffer, spokesman for the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, tells New Times the haze isn't the usual smog that often blocks the mountainous scenery during the morning commute, it's smoke from Canadian wildfires that's been sent to Arizona by the Canadian government as retaliation for Phoenix stealing the Winnipeg Jets hockey team made its way to Arizona.

Morning Poll: Is Tonight's Game the Phoenix Coyotes' Last Game in the Desert?

coyoteslogoblack.jpg
If you believe Canadian newspapers, tonight's game against the Detroit Red Wings will be the Phoenix Coyotes last game in the desert.

Canadians like hockey. Judging by attendance at Coyotes games, Phoenicians don't (at least not enough to drive to west side), which is why Canadians are so optimistic that their beloved Winnipeg Jets will be returning to our overly polite neighbors to the north.

The Coyotes ended the season with the second worst attendance in the NHL. That, coupled with the Goldwater Institute's crusade to drive the team out of the Valley, is not helping the city of Glendale's attempt to keep the team.

In an attempt to lure the team back to Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Free Press is reporting that True North, a Canadian company that's been trying to purchase the team, is expected to trigger a campaign to sell season tickets -- before the team even relocates -- to prove to the NHL that Canadians are better hockey fans than desert dwellers.

The Coyotes are down three games to none to the Red Wings in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. If they play as poorly tonight as they have during the rest of the series, tonight will be the Coyotes last game of the season. But will it be their last game in the desert?

We want to know what you think. Cast your vote below.

Canadians Considering Invading United States -- to Save Housing Market. Phoenix on the Short List of Probable Canadian Destinations

Could be America's wallet, too.
A Canadian financial institution released a survey saying one in five maple leaf-ers want to hop the border to live in the United States, and before you yell "border fence," consider their intent: they want to invest in America's housing market (and probably go to hockey games).

BMO Bank of Montreal made its findings public today, saying 20 percent of Canadians would now consider purchasing real estate in the United States, while noting the value of property in vacation destinations popular amongst Canadians, like Arizona, is in the crapper.More »

Brett Sutter, Calgary Flames (That's a Hockey Team, Zonies) Forward, Arrested for Assault in Scottsdale

Are the Phoenix Coyotes so bad that their opponents think it's OK to stay out partying until 2 a.m. the night before a game? Calgary Flames center Brett Sutter apparently thinks so and it's landed him in a bit of trouble.

The Flames are in town to play the Coyotes tonight, and Sutter used some of his down time last night to go partying in Scottsdale, where police say he punched a cab driver in the face for no apparent reason.

According to the incident report, Sutter was at American Junkie, where bouncers say he "was acting up all night."

Phoenix Coyotes Fall to Ottawa Senators; Hockey's Back in the Desert, Eh?

logocoyotes.JPG
www.coyotes.nhl.com
It's hockey season again in the Valley, and despite the almost-miraculous conclusion to last season, the Phoenix Coyotes aren't off to a great start.

The Coyotes are now 2-3-3 on the season, which includes last night's 5-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators.

The Senators dominated the first period with 20 shots on net to the Howlers' 8. Three of those shots went in, two of which went in nine seconds apart.

Ottawa defenseman Erik Karlsson got the scoring started for the Senators with a power-play goal about five minutes into the game.

Nine seconds later, Ottawa winger Alexei Kovalev made it 2-0.

Vancouver Acid Attack "Victim" Threw Acid on Herself. Mesa Acid Victim Legit, Cops Say

Bethany Storro -- before she threw acid on her face.
When a Mesa woman had a cup of acid thrown in her face by an unidentified woman earlier this month -- just days after an almost identical attack in Vancouver -- we have to admit that the idea of a traveling, serial acid-tosser crossed our minds.

That, it now seems, would be impossible. Unless the "victim" in Vancouver also is the person who tossed acid in the face of the Mesa victim, Derri Velarde.

Straight from the WTF files: we got word today that the victim in the Vancouver attack actually threw the acid on herself.
