Arizona Lawmaker Proposes Ban on Giving Machine Guns to Children

An Uzi submachine gun.
After a 9-year-old girl accidentally shot and killed a shooting instructor with an Uzi in Mohave County last week, an Arizona lawmaker is proposing a ban on giving machine guns to children.

"I cannot believe we need a law like this, but we do," Democratic Representative Victoria Steele tells New Times.

The 9-year-old girl was being instructed on how to fire the gun at a gun range called Last Stop in White Hills, a town between Kingman and Las Vegas. Video footage shows how the girl lost control of the firearm, although the video cuts off a split-second before shooting instructor Charles Vacca was shot.

Steele says she plans on proposing a ban on transferring a machine gun to anyone under the age of 16, including at a gun range.

"I'm disgusted that we even need such a law -- that parents can't be trusted to not give a machine gun to a 9-year-old girl," Steele says.

Steele says she got the idea for the statute from Connecticut lawmakers, who passed a bill after an extremely similar incident occurred at a gun expo in Massachusetts. In that case, an 8-year-old Connecticut boy accidentally shot himself to death firing an Uzi.

This wouldn't be Steele's first attempt to pass a gun-safety law -- earlier this year, she proposed a law that would have required adults to keep guns locked up if there are children in the home. Steele's bill didn't even get a hearing, and the Republican-controlled Legislature actually passed some laws relaxing gun regulations.

The next legislative session doesn't start until next year, so Steele still needs to be re-elected by voters in her Tucson-area district before she can propose the bill.

how dare this woman try to introduce such lunatic legislation. all children have a GOD GIVEN right to handle automatic weapons and I'm sure Mr. Vacca would share those sentiments and that he was in total control of that terrible event, may he rest in peace.

Oh good grief. I'm liberal, but even I have limits on how far I think the state should be getting into my business. This seems excessive.

What kind of fucking IDIOT lets a child shoot or even HOLD a loaded full auto weapon??? It's like the video of the Somalian pirate that hands the AK-47 to the chimp, we all knew something bad was going to happen except him.

Glad to see some people get what big G is doing here. Well played sir.

It doesn't because laws don't prevent incidents. A new law wouldn't prevent anything. History has proven that into the ground and back.

Right I don't think other instructors will need a law to make them not want to do this again. Well said.

Still don't need any new laws as there is already a law against any wrong doing you can think of and that isn't a exaggeration. These people could have been charged without any new law written and they were not and it wasn't because they couldn't but because the one at fault paid a dear price. No more new laws it's just not necessary at all.

I don't think civilian adults should be allowed either. These are for military personnel.

Why do we need a damn law for everything. No more BS laws just stop making every single thing illegal. It doesn't prevent crime anyways. There are already laws in place if someone acts negligent. Law makers need to chill out on writing new laws at a insane rate! If you don't think they write to many laws then tell us how many laws are currently written. Good luck with that so far no one knows because it's a ridiculous number. Our point is writing laws does not resolve issues or problems. This is like thinking you can take a pill to lose weight and stay in shape without having to exercise and eat healthy. Same type of logic and mentality that is dangerous and flawed! Just our thought on this.

People are too concerned about "losing freedom". No time for common sense. The irony is while they worry about guns, other rights are actually being infringed on. Case in point: Internet censorship, the patriot act

Completely unnecessary. 99% of people do Not own machine guns. Dumb waste of taxpayer resources to even talk about it.

How many kids have killed or injured someone while using a machine gun in Arizona since the state became a state?

And we need another law for this?

Really?

What we certainly need is more laws to protect morons. Just a few more and we can save every last idiot!

I don't see the reason for ANYONE to have a machine gun, unless you are in the military fighting a war...

who in their right mind would let a child handle a uzi? Are people so stupid that there needs to be a law about this? SMH!

No.....Teach them with the RIGHT weapon....That one was way too much for her to handle.....

I believe that it is the parent of that child to make that decision. When you're child screws up it's the parents fault. When you're child does something good it's still because of the parents. What I am describing here is parenting people.

Jessica Kelsey

There shouldn't need to be, because it should be common sense that a child can't handle that sort of artillery.

@marcy More people in the US have been killed by kids with guns than by terrorists.  You have to be 16 to drive, and that law seems to work well, as I almost never see a 9 year old behind the wheel of a SUV!

I appreciate your view that local, county and state police all give up the automatic weapons that they possess.  I also look forward to you demanding that the FBI, BATF, DEA, Customs and Border Patrol, TSA and all other federal agencies also get rid of all the automatic weapons they possess.

Yes, people do stupid things and laws are an ineffective way of making people smarter.

Including local, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies, right?

@WhoKnows @marcy  And how many kids have been killed in a gun free zone by a Liberal Democrat? Just about all of them, Gun Free Zones is another useless law that doesn't save anyone.

@marcy Marcy, You're using trained law enforcement to defend your view that 9 year olds should be able to get their hands on a fully auto Uzi?

WhoKnows

@marcy How many 9 year olds do you see behind the wheel of a car every week?  How many 10 year olds grabbing a beer at the local bar?

Trust me, you'd see more if there weren't laws prohibiting those actions!

@marcy Why do you hate law enforcement agencies so much?
