Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton showed up this weekend at a central Phoenix union hall to help Ruben Gallego make a last-minute push in his race for U.S. Congress.

Stanton hadn't declared support for any candidate until this weekend -- and he selected Gallego over the other Democratic candidates in the race: Mary Rose Wilcox, Jarrett Maupin, and Randy Camacho.

The four are facing off against each other tomorrow in hopes of winning Arizona's 7th Congressional District seat.

Stanton has a few reasons to support Gallego over Wilcox. One, he works with Gallego's wife, Kate, on the Phoenix City Council. Secondly, Ruben Alonzo, Gallego's campaign manager, successfully ran Stanton's campaign for mayor and was hired by Stanton as a chief of staff.

And most people probably don't remember that Wilcox was not in Stanton's camp when he was running for Phoenix mayor. Instead, she backed one of his opponents, former Phoenix Councilwoman Peggy Neely.

Gallego said he's "proud" to have Stanton in his corner.

"He's a progressive champion and has done so much to make our community a better place for everyone," he said in a statement.

Wilcox has also scored big-name endorsements. Longtime Congressman Ed Pastor, who's held the CD7 seat for nearly 25 years, announced he supports her. She also received a nod and personal campaign-rally visit from Illinois Congressman Luis Gutierrez, a national voice on comprehensive immigration reform.

Gallego's also endorsed by Dolores Huerta, a well-known labor and civil-rights activist and Arizona Congressman Raul Grijalva, a outspoken advocate for immigration reform.

Tomorrow's the day that Democrats will vote with their heart and Republicans will vote with their hate.

@annarkey14 Uh, no. Teathuglicans cannot vote in the Dem primary. If they could, there's not much of a choice for them between Gallego and Wilcox. And on Nov. 4, it will of course be a Dem who gets to go to Washington.
