One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: Scott Smith Is the Only Sane Choice for Governor in the GOP Primary

Former Mesa Mayor Scott Smith: the non-crazy Republican in the GOP primary for governor

It's "Candidates Day" at North Scottsdale Christian, a conservative, non-denominational place of worship just north of Pima Road and Dynamite Boulevard, where about 60 Democratic, Libertarian, and Republican candidates have assembled on a recent Sunday to introduce themselves.

The politicians are allowed to set up tables with campaign literature in the church's main lobby, not unlike the moneylenders Jesus is said to have driven from the temple. And following Senior Pastor David Friend's sermon, the candidates line up before the dais to shake hands and exchange pleasantries with many of several hundred congregants.

All the GOP candidates for governor are here, though the lone Democratic gubernatorial contender, Fred DuVal, did not attend. Of course, with no primary and about $1 million on hand at last count, DuVal has less to pray for at the moment than those vying to be his general election foil.

To give an idea of how conservative the North Scottsdale church is, during his sermon, Pastor Friend quotes literature from the right-wing Center for Arizona Policy, calls CAP president Cathi Herrod "my good friend," and inveighs against what he refers to as the "false doctrine of the separation of church and state."

So it's no surprise that the candidates, when given the opportunity to make 15-second statements before Friend's sermon, generally tout their religious affiliations, conservative principles, and family ties.

Former California Congressman Frank Riggs, an Army veteran, talks about raising his right hand, his left hand on a Bible, to swear an oath of allegiance to the United States.

Disbarred former county attorney Andrew Thomas mentions that he and his family attend Saint Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church. Secretary of State Ken Bennett offers that he is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

State treasurer Doug Ducey describes himself as a "cradle Catholic" and becomes the butt of a joke by Friend when the pastor exclaims, apropos of nothing, "I like your hair."

Given that Ducey is cursed with a head of helmet hair that could rival that of a Lego figurine, the chortles of the congregants could not have pleased the former Cold Stone Creamery executive, whom some polls show as the GOP primary's front runner.

The comments of former Mesa Mayor Scott Smith and of former GoDaddy lawyer Christine Jones stand out, however.

Jones goes for broke on religious extremism, explaining that she grew up "in an evangelical church not unlike this one," and then she makes an interesting request.

"I would love your support," she tells the crowd, "but mostly I would covet your prayer, that the truth will be revealed, that lies will be exposed, and that Christians will elect leaders who are followers of Christ."

Meaning, I guess, that the few Jewish candidates for other offices also present that day need not have bothered to show up.

She probably intends the part about the "lies" as a not-so-veiled jab at her nemesis, Ducey, who, along with certain pro-Ducey groups, has been merciless during this primary in ripping apart Jones' statements and biography.

Still, I cannot help recalling the Republican State Committee meeting in January, when Jones sat almost directly behind me toward the end of the event, as state committeemen and committeewomen approached the microphone and tearfully told the assembled of this or that local GOPer who had passed away recently.

Heads bowed to offer a moment of silence or prayer for those who had departed since the last state committee meeting. It was at that point that Jones nodded at the person next to her, and they got up and walked out, while the getting was good.

I'll take none of the above and opt for getting the hell out of this cesspool instead. Arizona will never change since its politics are dictated by white near-deads who always vote conservative. Still gagging at Candyass "I married a Mexican so I can't be racist, now let's build a wall to keep out all the wetbacks" Thomas's latest hate speech campaign ad screaming about the evils of the "gay lobby" and "liberal bullies."

I wish we had more of a selection in Candidates for Governor of Arizona, like more Democrats!, however, Smith seems to fit the right Candidate, and this is why the Republican base is going after him, for he is going to disturb the GOP'S stronghold in Arizona, and a lot of Followers are going to be mad as hell! not because he might have an agenda against the conservatives, but might diminish their strong feelings about some legislation that has scared away a lot of good paying corporations that would have plenty of jobs that would move the economy of the State, but rough politics in the  State tend to hide away what they are trying to do with this situation , to hide away the secret of the state's meager situation where their problems to meet the budget every year keeps going back to the State's education problem, and when there's no money to cover this problem, all the politicians can do is challenge the Court's ruling with another appeal that will lengthen yet another decision for a few years which will never seem to resolve this political quagmire, but it seems like a lot of people is ok. with these decisions the States legislature is taking, decisions that have   political implications that show that some of their legislation as the 1070 bill has a tendency  to drive investment in the State away but officials, are driven to ignore that and supplant it with other aspects of the economy or draw their own conclusions, and draw the citizens away from any of this to show their own picture!!! WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!! and for those 5 people listening,!!! it is time we go back to the normal way of conducting fair and true forms of politics without the gerrymandering and threat of voting suppression that the GOP  is famous for, let the citizens of the Country, State, County and cities have their own political decisions!!!!

The trouble with Smith is that he never met a fat-cat developer that he could say "no" to.

Smith orchestrated the $100-million give away where Mesa citizens were black-mailed by a Chicago billionaire into building the Cubs a new stadium.

Smith claims to have an accounting background.

OK, so when does the "economic benefit" from all the alleged business that the Cubs bring to Mesa, going to add up to $100-million?

Answer:  In about 20-years.  And at that time, the Cubs' owners will be shaking-down Mesa *again* with threats to move the team if we don't build them a *another* new stadium.

Hey, Cubs, Fuck You!

I always think that a "newspaper" which always predictably comes down on the side of the most leftist anything can always predictably decide that the most leftist candidate is the only sane one. Always. And that's why I always get my "news" from predictable sources. Always. A pox on all their houses.

Thanks to Stephen Lemons for the links to the Republic and Washington Post stories about the border immigrant crisis, and especially the George Will quote. He used to represent the right wing of the Republican party, but this deluge of lunatics have him looking like an absolute centrist.

I've told by people involved in the placement of these immigrant juvenile refugees that 70% of them are being placed with families. Of course, there's the usual right wing hysteria, including that promoted by the hyperventilating Tea Party governor of Alaska, who claimed that they were being victimized by the Obama administration since five kids were sent there (apparently to their grandparents).

Brewer's bud Chuck Coughlin is Arizona's premier CCA lobbyist, of course, so I expect they will be pumping dough into whomever's campaign is most likely to reciprocate with useless prisoner contracts that thoroughly hose Arizona's taxpayers.

The NT's pictures of these candidates are pretty strange.  Three seem to have blond patches in their hair.  Are they getting hair plug transplants from Scandinavian donors, or did they borrow a few leftover gallons of peroxide from Ann Coulter?

My prediction:  if Smith wins the primary, he wins the general.  If Jones wins, DuVall wins.  If Ducey wins...it's going to be a horse race, with Ducey most likely winning.

Yeah, you libtards would like to have Scott Smith as gov.   He's as liberal an left wing retarded as you can get.  A classic example of how contagious liberalism can be!   The comments about being tough on illegals is about the sensible thing that I've heard hear on this site.

Why does Arizona always have to be the worst we can be rather than the best we can be? Why are the Republican one party state dictatorship always against anything that improves this State? This State was way more progressive in 1977 than we are now. I will vote for the Republican who guarantees to deport all the illegals from Liechtenstein forthwith! They make that much sense.

The pic of Smith makes him look like Pat Sajak.

Thomas is the face of evil.

Smith is the only non mentally sick candidate but he's got to stop towing the party line.

How is Nicaragua not like El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala? See, it's again run by commies just as it was during the Iran-Contra days 30 years ago. Their policies are not quite as accommodating to free-enterprise drug and human trafficking cartels as are their neighbors.

Soooo, Pastor Friend, when the Establishment Clause is ripped from the Constitution, what will be America's state religion? Lutheranism, like in Scandinavia, Catholicism like in Spain and Italy, Anglicanism in the UK? Or Holy Rollerism such as yours? That would be a golden opportunity for you and your ilk to impose The Gospel upon the rest of us. Just imagine. Mandatory tithing. Mandatory church attendance. Capital punishment for GLBTs? Some of your believers will demand it. The end of liberty and justice as we know it. Just imagine.

wtf...

i'm praying he wins!...BUT i know the crazies in the state will vote for the craziest of all.

@wtf... I'm hoping that the GOP primary result's in a candidate that no sane person will vote for in the general (Thomas comes to mind!).  I'm really starting to distrust  Smith, as he seems to be bending too far to the idiot right...

Wow, you are just about as obtuse as one can get.  In your diseased, whiny, shit-stained, bigoted little mind are you insinuating that Jesus was either liberal or a socialist?  Fuck you are stupid!

@Jukes @rockdog48 Jukes,  having been  a Mormon the first 25yrs. of my life,  I know a little about that and I can assure you that doesn't make you perfect.   As a matter of fact,  there are many M's that are liberal in various aspects of their lives (liberalism is a disease that invades the psyche incrementally, not all at once).

@spliffy @MaskedMagician1967  so you will be voting "foe " the candidate who is toughest on illegal Mexicans, one thing I'm sure of is that illegal Mexicans can at least spell (for). And I will vote for anyone who can stop the bigotry and moronic desires of ignorant a$$es like you. Does not matter history will continue just like it has for the last 100 years, predominately white politicians making laws they have no intention of following thru on. We can send a man to the moon but we can't close the borders? what does that tell you Einstein? as far as i'm concerned you can kiss my big brown butt, albeit an American brown butt.

@fishingblues   Fishing, you obviously have never read the New Testament.  Jesus was a pacifist who taught us to open our hearts, our homes, and our wallets to the poor, the infirm, the aged.  He advocated forgiveness and turning the other cheek.  Above all, he taught the Golden Rule that we should do unto others as we would wish to have done to ourselves.  (Not exactly a popular concept with tea partiers.)  And then there is that story in the NT about the moneylenders, so I don't think Jesus was all that fond of unfettered capitalism either.

Jesus wasn't just a liberal or a socialist, he was both ... and a revolutionary to boot.
