A coalition of immigrant rights groups held a press conference this morning to announce the launch of "Arizona Freedom Summer," a campaign to get out the Latino vote in this fall's elections.

The campaign's name references the push to register African-American voters in the segregated Deep South 50 years ago. But this time, volunteers came from the south to register voters here in Arizona. This morning, a bus with 43 volunteers from Arkansas arrived at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Phoenix. The visitors, members of an immigrant-rights non-profit called the Arkansas United Community Coalition, are here to share their knowledge with members of One Arizona, a non-partisan coalition of church groups, student organizations, and individuals working to get out the Latino vote and push for immigration reform.

"Arizona has been a battleground for civil rights for Latinos for really the last 100 years," said the Reverend John Mireles, a leader in the state's League of United Latin American Citizens, one of the nation's oldest civil rights organizations for Latinos.

Today's event marked the beginning of a civic-engagement drive that will last through Election Day. Arkansas and Arizona volunteers will canvass and make phone calls to encourage voter registration over the next several days. And come Election Day, local volunteers will push Latino voters to put that registration to use.

"We are grateful for the chance to learn from like-minded nonprofit organizations," said Mireya Reith, the executive director of the Arkansas United Community Coalition, "as well as be motivated by the children and families who have become the most recent victims of a broken immigration system that is desperate for reform".

Reith's group took the long ride to Phoenix to share its skill set with One Arizona, and to learn from organizers here. "We are here to stand in solidarity with Arizona because we believe in your work, and your work is our work," Reith said. The Arkansas coalition will be in Phoenix through August 10th.

In Arkansas, organizers were able to double the Latino vote in the last election season, Reith said. Their goal is to double the figures once again this year.

As in the Freedom Summer of 1964, organizers expect young people to play a critical role in Arizona's campaign. Today, the room was filled with high school students and young adults. "We are led by young people," said Michael Angulo, a Phoenix volunteer. "The sons and daughters of SB 1070."

Arizona volunteers await the arrival of the Arkansas group.

"We are here in the spirit of the Civil Rights Movement," said Raquel Teran of Mi Familia Vota Arizona. "We are here in the spirit of Freedom Summer. Here in Arizona, we need to continue to build that political landscape so our families have equal access to education, healthcare. So that our families don't have to live in fear because of the Joe Arpaios."

The event closed with cheers of "Si Se Puede" and "Yes We Can."

This summer marks the 50-year anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, which was passed shortly after Freedom Summer drew national attention to voting issues in the Deep South.

This is just a campaign to promote election fraud. The Tea Party has their campaigns too.  If you don't have an ID there's still time to get one before it's time to vote.

The greatest myth the right wing tries to spread is that they are the real majority in America......32% is not a majority if one is a die hard republican they register as such, a person registers as a democrat due to the identify more often than not with democrat party and Independents register Independent due to they identify with no party, but they will vote one way or the other, some have racist views some not, do not know of any viable way to measure Independent racism, polls are meaningless ask them folks who predicted Romney winning by a land slide, when one can poll every single voting age person in America and get them to honestly answer a question put at them they might not wish to be asked one might know what a Majority of Americans think today, polls are nothing more than a educated guess! Flip a coin and guess head or tails and your as likely to be right as any professional poll taker! Reality is GOP is driving voters away with their racist wing, the tea partiers, their rampant, vocal hatred of people of color cannot be disguised with a few token non-whites in their ranks, during the ole Plantations of the ole south, their were members of the slave class willing to betray their own for that bit of space in the big house, a bit better food, better treatment, but the ole plantation owner might have liked them a bit better much like he did his favorite hunting dog! I do not like to use the old term for them, a newer more appropriate one is they are white trapped in a non-white body dreaming of one day being what they will never be!

There once existed a Whig Party during the Colonial era, they decided a strict ideological view, if you even slightly did not agree with their ideology they did not want you, the GOP today has a infection, infestation of old former democrats whom migrated to the GOP in the 1960's in anger over blacks being given their voting rights, and their Jim Crow Laws being ruled illegal, today they dominate much of the GOP upper ruling class, today they have Jim Crow Esquire, a more sophisticated version of Jim Crow Laws which were merely laws to try and suppress voters whom they knew they cannot appeal to, nor would submit to their white supremacist ideology! They hide behind states rights as they did in 1960's, they have not changed, they thank god are not a real majority and never have been, merely controlled elections via deception, voter suppression, but these tactics in the long run do not win out, denying anyone a legitimate right makes them angry, and angry voters will demand their rights, the voter ID laws are a minor thing and will backfire, many of their elderly white voters will be deterred to come out, democrats have notoriously had ability to bus our voters to the polls, its a mere new stop in the process direct the bus to the DMV, get them photo ID's which the Dixiecrats inside the GOP think will be like them Jelly Bean Jar counting tests, deter the voters from coming out, its going to fail, 32% register nationally Republican, 42% Democrat remainder Independents or minority parties! They win due to deception and voter apathy but make voters mad and think your denying their rights they will rise up and do so in mass!

Red republican states have more poor people. Lower wages and fewer Unions. That's how the rich get richer and the republicans can use religion to get your vote.

Anybody who needs to be encouraged to vote probably really has no business voting.

Targeted encouragement of voters who are expected to vote for your cause is far more damaging to the democratic process than spending a lot of money on advertising.

The republican party says that they want job growth. Then why don't they want the Casino in Glendale? Because they can't get a no bid contract for their lobbyists friends.

its about bringing in desperate people who will fall for the notion that the democrats are their mommy and daddy. political pawns used by the same people that brought us the KKK.

The same argument could be used against Republicans. In case you haven't noticed, you have a Republican lead Legislature and a Republican in the Governor's office.

Karma is a strange thing, Arizona has been a magnet for the social misfits of America, sometimes they call themselves Minute Men, sometimes Tea Partiers but they simply are genetic defects who have one common denominator a defective gene that makes them racist!

One thing Arizona is going to see a rude awakening as will America one day when the demographics of those many white supremacists both openly racist and their brethren who hide behind fake patriotism and border issues have to eat crow that their vote is not going to run things by around 2030, maybe sooner for many states, Arizona might soon before that date they say nationally, only time will tell! I am white, and I do not fear the non-white vote, our constitution protected the non-whites in 1960's and it will protect any minority, but karma is a funny thing, only the racists will suffer a rude awakening those of us who are not cursed with the genetic defect will merely live as we always have, openly open minded with no genetic defect!

Tell em if they don't vote, they have to French kiss Arpaio.

That ought to guarantee a 100% turnout.

While the Democrats use the promise of higher wages and more entitlements to buy your votes.  That's how people become more and more dependent upon the government and less and less free.

The two-party system is a complete failure.

In a Constitutional republic, it takes far more than 51% to take away your rights.

Or a federal government that doesn't care about the Constitution.

@rh19541954

You call yourself open-minded, but you've clearly made no attempt to understand those of us who see the value of reasonable limits on immigration, choosing instead to dismiss us as secret racists.

Can you see why I fear the votes of "open-minded" people who are filled with hate?

@annarkey14

Even jokingly, you're suggesting that it doesn't matter how stupid or ill-informed people are, even to the point of believing that they might be forced to kiss the sheriff if they don't vote, just so long as they get to the polls.  That may be good for a single-issue, but it's really horrible for the electoral process as a whole.

I like the old FDR comment on fear, we have nothing to fear but fear itself! You have one vote I have one vote, now if your view is a majority it will prevail, if not it will fail! My view on racists, racism is they expose themselves takes no rocket scientist or PHD to spot them they are fairly obvious they tend to hang themselves with their own words!

If you don't want stupid and ill informed people showing up at the polls, just keep away all of the Tea Party and most of the Republicans......problem solved.

In your mind, did that really sound like a valid argument?

Blindly dismissing anybody who disagrees with you as racist is intellectual laziness.  It makes you appear to be dull-witted.

@valleynative,

I married a woman whose mother has Alzheimers and I feel that it is my duty to stay here and help with her care.

I realize that, in conservative ideology, this would be considered a "poorly-considered decision."  that's why I'm damn proud to be a liberal.

valleynative

@annarkey14 @valleynative

I said that people who are demonstrably stupid shouldn't be encouraged to vote, and you, in response, say that people who hold political views that differ from yours shouldn't be allowed to vote.

The fact that you don't see how despicable that suggestion is, and that you blithely dismiss people with differing views as stupid and ill-informed, suggests that you're not really worth having a discussion with.

You really need to open your mind and make an attempt to understand the people with whom you disagree.  You'll find that most people at any point in the political spectrum are hopelessly ill-informed, but you'll also find people at most points along the spectrum with well thought-out opinions.

No one can make anyone a racist, its always been and always will be a self made thing, like the old bible says on how to spot a false prophet it will be by that which proceeds from their very own mouths! So shall one spot a racist via their own words!

Thanks for making it abundantly clear that you have no idea of what "conservative ideology" means and absolutely no scruples about lying about it.

If this is a shithole, why do you insist that your wife and her mother stay here?

valleynative

@rh19541954 @valleynative @TeflonJoe

Which of my words make me a racist?

Dismissing anybody who disagrees as a racist is a childishly simple way to avoid having to actually think about what they're saying.
