Grijalva for Congress

Three children from Central America who came to the United States unaccompanied appeared before members of Congress on Tuesday to explain their journeys to the United States.

Democratic Congressman Raúl Grijalva hosted the hearing with other members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Grijalva said he didn't want people, especially members of Congress, to become "detached" from the issue of Central American children fleeing their countries for the United States, as several proposals have been made in Congress to deal with the issue.

"I think as a Congress we're missing the point of this whole issue," Grijalva said. "The point is that were talking primarily about children, we're talking primarily about their fleeing violence and fleeing many times for their own safety and lives. And we're missing the point that, as a nation, we're the embodiment of those values that protect the weaker, those values that protect the people fleeing persecution and prosecution."

Dulce Medina, age 15, fled Guatemala five years ago, after witnessing and being subject to violence in the streets where she lived, and was assaulted by the aunt she lived with after her mother left home to try to get a better opportunity in the United States. In one example, she described a time when a construction worker cornered her and her cousin, and attempted to remove their clothing. She said her aunt accused her of lying and hit her, and she believed the police were corrupt -- a belief she formed when she saw a woman she knew get shot near her home, and police didn't pursue the case.

Dulce was granted Special Immigrant Juvenile status, which got her a green card, and allowed her to reunite with family in New York.

Under legislation proposed by Republican Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake -- and in legislation proposed by the House GOP -- Dulce may not have had the chance to present her case to a judge. Instead, the senators have proposed legislation they say would, "Allow for expedited removal of all undocumented immigrants that are stopped at the border attempting to enter the United States illegally, allowing law enforcement to return them to their home countries within a matter of hours or days as opposed to the months or years removal currently takes in most cases."

Dulce and the other two children undoubtedly were brought in by these left-wing representatives to put human faces on the crisis.

"Would you want to be sent back to a place where someone needs to harm you?" Dulce asked.

These maudlin hearings are a cynical sideshow. America has millions of its own children facing violence, food deprivation and environmental degradation everyday. Ingesting more illiterate poverty from the Third World's heaving birth canal will only make things worse.

I don't blame these kids one bit for trying to make in the US. I would too if I were in their shoes. And I don't blame the advocates that are trying to help them, it's the humane thing to do. But there are finite resources. The US cannot afford to care for its own citizens, let's alone the children that need us in the world. An analogy would be giving to the homeless. If I gave to the homeless enough eventually I will be in the position they are. I do what I can to help, but I still have to take care of myself. We are not the charity of the world. If it were legal to deny benefits or assistance to these individuals once they gain legal residence, I would be okay with them staying. But that's not how it works. It's like adopting children. Once we allow someone become a citizen, we take responsibility for their life, liberty and health in this country. And that's an opportunity that we just can't afford to give to everyone that needs it in this world.

For those who harm children it would be better to have a mill stone hung around ones neck and be thrown into the sea! I think stories like this always bring out the social misfits, sadists, those with less than stellar lives, no doubt the vile, venom the spew towards these kids whose only real crime is being born into poverty, into a country with corrupt governments, and fleeing to a place of hope! I venture many will rue the day they vented so much hatred at these kids, that lake of fire is a bad place to spend eternity debating why you ended there for such a simple thing as being inhumane!

How are these kids worse off than the kids in israel, palestine, and syria? I sure as hell doubt that these little mutts were running from rocket attacks and multiple bombings while playing in front of their homes. Before the US even starts helping these recruited gang members, they should focus on american children and children in TRUE war-torn countries.

Journalists LOVE to call people by "labels".  However, when a human being takes a position on an issue involving poiltics, that position (not the person) can be on a scale of liberal (wants change) to conservative (does not want change). It is a long held tradition in this Nation to allow people seeking asylum to come to this country for sanctury.  THAT is the conservative position on the issue of people seeking to flee from violence and oppression.  It is NOT a Liberal position.  It is McCain and Flake that hold the "liberal" issue on this matter as they are the ones proposing CHANGE.

It would be nice to actually have a reporter which does take their job seriously enough to point out that basic definitions do not change just because you want to peg someone in a little box that you can then attack easily.

To be fair this panel should have gotten a few children from Detroit and have them tell their story it wouldn't be any different,, but latter aren't entitled to get asylum into another state.

@Gary Rorrer

Children seeking refuge from death by gang violence?!

How about we tell their Countries to use our Billions of U.S. Aid Dollars to wage WAR on Gang Violence or we will cut off their billions and use it to care for these children?!

Try thinking as a good  American would?

Your head is not just a weight for your shoulders.

@john043012 I know things in Detroit are pretty rough but I don't think there are many 12-year-olds there who've witnessed multiple murders.

@john043012 Children from Detroit are free to legally move about the United States without fear of deportation you ass!

@ExpertShot Hey Einstein children from Detroit or for that matter anywhere in the Unites States are not free to move about the United States and if captured doing so they would be detained by human services or some other agency while their parents are being tracked down.

@john043012 Thank you for the compliment.  I'm sorry you did not complete your 5th grade education - must have been moving from state to state too much with your migrant worker family.  "Unites States" indeed!

@john043012 So if a girl leaves her abusive aunt in Detroit to go find her mother in Boise, which one do you suppose the government's going to place her with?
