As early ballots begin arriving in mailboxes across Arizona, Mayor Greg Stanton is throwing his political support behind Michael Johnson, who is running for a seat on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.

Johnson, a former Phoenix city councilman, is running against fellow Democrats Steve Gallardo and Marie Lopez Rogers, to represent residents in the county's District 5.

Stanton and Johnson joined other community leaders at the historic George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center in South Phoenix to bolster Johnson's campaign.

Stanton says that Phoenix benefited from Johnson's 12 years as a councilman.

"No one is more aware of our obligation to keep our communities safe or that small, local businesses are the engine that drives our regional economy," says Stanton. "He understands how regional partnerships move our community forward."

The district has about half a million residents from various cities, including Avondale, Buckeye, Gila Bend, the Gila River Indian Community, Glendale, Goodyear, Guadalupe, Phoenix and Tolleson.

That seat had long been occupied by Mary Rose Wilcox, who left her position to run for Congress. When Wilcox resigned, the board appointed former Avondale Mayor Marie Lopez Rogers to temporarily fill the post.

The primary election is on August 26. And the winner on that night will run in the general election against Republican Mark Riddles. However, in a heavily Latino and Democratic district, a Republican has no chance of winning.
