Frank Riggs "Proud" to Have Support of Recalled State Senator Russell Pearce; W/UPDATE

Frank Riggs
Frank Riggs, a former California Congressman who wants to be Arizona's next governor, is "proud" to have the support of recalled State Senator and scandal-magnet, Russell Pearce.

Riggs is one of six candidates vying to win the Republican primary on August 26, which in red-state Arizona could be the deciding factor in this year's race for governor. He discusses why he's so happy for Pearce's endorsement in a news release sent out this morning.

But even conservatives like Riggs can't be very proud of Pearce's Fiesta Bowl scandal or the sham candidate he appears to have fielded in a desperate move to keep his seat in the 2011 recall campaign.

We left a message for Riggs this morning with his PR-woman, Darcie Johnston, asking where Riggs stands on those issues. If he calls back, we'll update this post with his response.

Riggs' news release quotes Pearce as saying, "After long and serious deliberation, I'm proud to support former police officer and U.S. Congressman Frank Riggs for Governor. I know Frank Riggs will use all the means at his disposal to defend our border and protect our citizens from the costs and damages associated with illegal immigration and border crimes by those who break our laws."

That's followed by Riggs' gushing, "I'm proud to have Sen. Pearce's support. He has been a national leader of the effort to restore constitutional government and has fought a long and courageous, but many times lonely, battle to secure our border, enforce the laws of our nation, and protect law-abiding citizens."

Immigration has certainly re-emerged as one of the biggest topics in Arizona, even though apprehensions along the state's southern border are at record lows.

However, is it really wise to support a disgraced politician the U.S. Navy all but called a liar in the Fiesta Bowl-ticket-mooching scandal? Does Riggs believe Pearce's version of how he got a free trip to a 2007 football game in Annapolis, Maryland?

And where does Riggs stand on how Pearce conducted himself during the recall campaign? Olivia Cortes, who would have drawn Democratic votes away from Pearce's GOP competitor, Jerry Lewis, seems to have entered the 2011 race with the prodding of Pearce. She withdrew from the race on the eve of a court hearing that threatened to expose the dirty game.

Riggs has been in Arizona since 2002, and -- according to Wikipedia, anyway -- wanted to be governor in 2006 but discovered he wasn't eligible.

Now he's raring to go, with a "small-government" mindset that somehow brings him to criticize SB 1062 but fully support SB 1070, and a ringing endorsement by one of the state's most polarizing politicians.

Of course, Riggs, one of the less-well-known in the pack of six candidates, is probably lucky to get an endorsement from anybody.

UPDATE: Riggs called us the day after this post was published.

Riggs says it's true that "recall elections are tricky," and that looking back over his own experience as an elected official, he'd do some things differently if given the "benefit of a do-over... but you don't get that choice."

Without coming out and saying it, he seems to implying that Pearce has done some regrettable things himself. However, ""on the whole, (Pearce) has served the state with distinction," Riggs says.

Since his recall, Pearce has been elected First Vice Chairman of the state Republican Party, Riggs points out. To Riggs, that means "the backbone of the party" has vindicated Pearce, "to the extend he needed a vindication."

Riggs adds that as a former police officer and deputy sheriff, he feels a professional kinship with Pearce, also a former deputy sheriff.

Frank Riggs is an honorable and courageous man and leader. I encourage you all to still do your own research to make an educated decision as to who is the right candidate for you and not decide on face value based off of one columnist's opinion.

Sometimes a simple photo, such as this story photo, says all that needs to be said.

I'm not sure what everyone's complaining about, 1 minute of reading saved me 45 minutes of research on the Internet who the hell Frank Riggs was.  All I needed was to read was the first paragraph and I knew enough about this asshat to mark him off my list.  Thanks PNT!

Wow, this assclown is actually proud of Pearce's endorsement?  The bribe taking, wife beating, Olivia Cortes fake candidate manipulating, racist pig who will forever be known as FORMER State Senator because the people in his heavily conservative district voted to boot his ugly ass out, Pearce?

Wow, Riggs is even more of an oaf than Al Melvin!

By the way, for those of you who have not seen the Singing Senators that I referred to, go to YouTube and search Ken Bennett 2014 Sine Die Song.  It is hysterical and covers all of the GOP controversies from recent history including Horne' s hit and run, Yee's refusal to hear the VA study of medical mj on treating PTSD, the Fiesta Bowl scandal and more. Sung to American Pie, it includes lyrics like "Did you write 1062? Did Cathi Herrod force you to? Or did the Bible tell you so?"  It's about 10 minutes long, but worth it to hear the Right roast itself. I would put a link out here, but I am posting from my Kindle and have no mouse, therefore no right-click.

It is so sad that in Az. we have to vote for the least corrupt or the least stupid ? All are one or the other..or both

I'm not voting for any of the slime "campaigning" for Governor.

They're all corrupt, mentally sick, disgraced narcissists.

How does a SLIMEBALL  like pearce endorse ANYTHING ? He must think he's  the WIZARD OF OZ ..........you know the one behind the curtain pushing all the buttons and whistles!

I think Pearce should endorse all of them. That said, Rusty, quit lying or the Navy will have your ass!

He's proud of having recalled Pearce's support, WTF ?

He just lost all credibility right there.

Sure won't be voting for this slimeball.

Okay, so add Riggs to the list of "no way" candidates. I'm now down to Smith or Bennett. Do either of them focus on the economy and education, or does everyone march only to the immigration drum? Has Arpiao endorsed anyone now that he has once again chosen not to run for governor himself?

@sarahanne Sara, if you know ANYTHING about the disgraced and dismissed former state senate president, Mister Pearce, you will understand that his endorsement has no value, even for the Teabody crowd here in this fine state.

That said, in only MY opinion, if he endorses someone that tells me that person advocates what Mister Pearce practices and I don't need further information to choose another candidate.

But, it's nice you took the time to admonish some of us who post here.

Noted.

@Egregious_Philbin Desperate times call for desperate measures. David Smith was endorsed by the local shurf in the last election, and lost to Heather Carter in the primary. He's advertising again that he's endorsed by the elderly shurf, once again. I am expecting him to lose this primary attempt, also.

Riggs is simply a doormat for Pearce to get his name out again.

@MaskedMagician1967 I am voting the GOP primary even though I don't care for any of the candidates for governor. Someone will go up against Duvall in the general, and stands a good chance of winning. (Just being realistic.)  I do NOT want that person to be Andy Thomas, Christine Jones, Doug Dicey, and now Frank Riggs. Right now I guess I'm leaning toward Smith, although I did appreciate Bennett's Singing Senators performance. That cracked me up.

@Dontbelieveit Unfortunately, I think he DOES still have a great deal of political pull, and will continue to do so as long as he has friends in high places.

@wherewasi  Yes me too, for the primary.  Oh wait, Bennett?  Isn't he the one who gave the right away to Sheriff Joe to pursue the silly "investigation" of the President's birth??

Where is the admonishment that ruffled your feathers, mr Collins?

My bad 66. I meant to say the Republican candidates.

@wherewasi @MaskedMagician1967 Bennett, in my opinion, is just a tool for the party, just like Mrs. Brewer. If we get stuck with Smith at least he has the ability to think on his own, even if he might not act on cogent thoughts.

"....I encourage you all to still do your own research to make an educated decision as to who is the right candidate for you and not decide on face value based off of one columnist's opinion".....

It didn't ruffle my feathers, so much. I just want you to know that the association with Mr. Pearce is NOT a good one, for ANY candidate. Mr. Riggs may well be an honorable and courageous man, but he needs to be better about who he chooses to endorse himself. In my uneducated opinion I don't think Mr. Riggs has a snowball's chance in hell of finishing any more than dead last in this race.

Nobody I'm sure, we have already seen many times that Montgomery doesn't hold his political buddies accountable for anything they do.

In fact, they can kill people and get away with it.
