Walmart Protesters Head to Chairman Rob Walton's Home in Paradise Valley

For the second time this year, Walmart protesters have taken their message to the Paradise Valley home of Walmart chairman Rob Walton.

With the backing of the United Food and Commercial Workers union, a few dozen protesters went on a march from McDonald Drive to Walton's home near the base of Camelback Mountain.

Protest subjects included claims of low wages, erratic scheduling, and retaliation against employees. (Earlier this year, the National Labor Relations Board Office of the General Counsel issued a complaint against Walmart, claiming employees in 13 states were retaliated against for protesting.)

Although the UFCW doesn't represent Walmart employees as a union, they do organize plenty of protests with against Walmart with current and former employees. One of their latest stunts is attempting to organize a walkout of mothers who work at Walmart, the nation's largest private employer.

Most of the protesters who took to Walton's home Monday were women, and their main message was calling for a minimum pay of $25,000 per year for full-time work to provide for their families.

This latest protest is part of a series of actions organized by the UFCW, including trying to organize a strike a couple days ahead of the company's shareholders meeting in Arkansas this week.

A couple of months ago, smaller group of activists associated with the same group delivered a "tax bill" to Walton's home, claiming Walmart should repay the government for its employees who also receive government assistance, like food stamps.

The king is staring down from his castle and wondering what is wrong with all those people.  His probably thinking my grand-pappy was a visionary.  He bought tracts of desert in the 50's & 60's so he could grow some-mo cotton, cows, and chickens.  And the labor coming from next door would be damn-near free.  Most of that desert sold off by W-M to become big subdivisions.  What does every big subdivision need?  A W-M.  Then the Nimby's popped up, W-M reminded the Nimby's W-M sold you the land on which your little tract home sits.  And where W-M plans to build the new store to serve your community was the land set aside for such a purpose.  To walk up kings-row and ask for sustainable wages that's not going to happen.  As one can see starting out, labor damn-near free is the crux of the business model.

Walmart and the Walton Family have done more damage to the American middle class than all the terrorists in the world and they count on the stupidity of the average American shopper to maintain their status. Low prices for low quality goods made in sweatshops the world over.............BUT NOT IN AMERICA.

Personally, I view shopping at Walmart as an act of treason.

I didn't realize he had a home here in the valley. Good for the protesters!

At DANNY KOHL, Sure it's wrong what Wal-Mart is doing, but that's their business. Who ever applies at Wally World and signs on to work for them is their decision. It sucks sure! I've worked jobs like that before when I was in school. Not all jobs are flowers and cupcakes and it never will be. Like I've said before, because I know from experience. If you don't like where you work or you aren't getting paid what YOU think you're worth? Quit and move on. It's as simple as that. You don't have to try to bend Wally World over and try to make them change. People will leave and eventually Wally World will have to change its ways.

Sorry but any company that can't pay a living wage yet continues to make billions in profits is a failed business model. We pay over a billion a year to give their employees healthcare. Who is subsidizing who?

To what? The same garbage pay and no benefits at a different job?Az is a right to work state, remember? Crap wages to begin with.

Kevin this isn't about how assertive your GF is. This is about how screwed people working at Wal Mart are, and how it is morally wrong to let a company in this country operate in this manner. Yeah it's not a technical job, does that make this okay? No. You can judge a lot about our society by the way our poor are treated. Yeah it's better than a lot of countries throughout history, doesn't mean we should leave the bar so low because of it

15 an hour is a reasonable wage for a non skilled worker.

Danny Cabbage
Danny Cabbage

Kevin, really? The heads of the company are some of the richest people on the planet, and the employees are some of the poorest workers in the country. The workers get a raise and then you think by raising prices it is the employees' fault for not having technical training? The company encourages employees to get on welfare because Wal Mart does not want to pay for it. They want it paid for with government health insurance. They want to keep their higher ups having homes on mountains. I can bet you not a single employee of walmart lives within eyesight of the camelback mountain base and I can bet you most of their workforce doesn't see decent health insurance. The ones that do are using Medicare and Medicaid

John Morgan

I can't decide who to side with, I always see both sides of an argument. That however does make me want to (pay close attention Wal Mart employees) go back to school to pursue a law degree so I can (pay close attention ppl opposed to the pay raise) advocate and help you fight for your minimum wage to be increased.

I guess you don't make a Trillion dollars in a year by treating your employees well and supporting fair competition. Only in huge separation of classes can this type of business exist for so long.

Do I hate what Walmart does in the US and China? Yes. Do I still shop there sometimes? Yes. Should I stop shopping there. Yes. I did however notice a large number of obease protestors in the two pics. It does not look like they are going hungry. Could represent their overall lifestyle choices. Although, nutritious food is more expensive.

@ Tim Fitchner! What Luis said makes perfect sense. These people don't deserve the pay they're asking for. If the work conditions at Wally World suck so bad? Quit and find work elsewhere. There is work out there if you know where to look and assert yourself. Don't go crying for a hand out just because you can't make ends meet. That's your own damn fault for not going to school and don't come back to me with the "Some people can't afford it" BS. It's all possible. My GF did it when she wasn't making enough money, she left her job, applied for grants and loans. Sure it's a pain in the ass, but that's how you get sh*t done! You work hard, get certified (1 yr of schooling) to become a Pharmacist Tech, and Xray Tech, Cad Operator, IT Technician, etc. etc. It's not hard. I know a lot of people who do it everyday. I don't have a degree but I'm a Lead CAD Operator/Engineering Tech, but I had to bust my ass to get where I'm at. Get it?!

A skilled Certified Pharmacist Technician in the medical field makes about $14 an hour to start. Computer Aided Drafters starting pay is between $12-$14 an hour and not many people with no proper training can do that type of work and you want a General Walmart employee to make as much as them for a job that doesn't really require any technical skill? Really??

Kenny Benally
Kenny Benally

Detest who? The workers or the store owners? And no! They don't deserve $12 an hour.

The only way to make a real statement is to stop shopping there.

Kenny Benally

25,000 a year?? That's $12 an hr. Go back to school and get a better paying job if you want to make $12 an hour. Working at Walmart as a general employee isn't really a skilled or technical job. I know some people rely on these types of jobs for employment, but come on. $12 an hr. is a bit much for a general employee. What thats going to do is raise the prices of the merchandise in the store. Walmart's stuff is already just as expensive as some of it's competitors. I don't even shop at Walmart anymore because of it.

Why is a union protest for a living wage called a "stunt"? It is simply an organized exercise of 1st amendment free speech rights. Is it that the only rights people are allowed to have are 2nd amendment rights?

It is against the law to protest in front of a persons personal residence.

People are paid what they are worth.  Simple concept.

Want to be paid more?  Stop whining.  Get an education and work harder.

For all you bleeding hearts, stop telling other people what to do with their money.  Start your own company and pay people whatever the hell you want.

fishingblues
fishingblues topcommenter

Well then, feel free to pay it.

66rock

So give us the Walton side of why they get rich, their help is underpaid and the tax payer pays their employees benefits. Can't see how choosing a side is confusing to you.

dlee23
dlee23

Working hard and taking the effort to gain new training, certifications, etc is no guarantee of employment. Your anecdotal experience may or may not apply to others situations. Problem is there are not enough jobs for everyone that wants one or is qualified for one.... that ultimately is the issue.

fishingblues
fishingblues topcommenter

You nailed it.  And guess what?  They are NOT in any union.

dlee23
dlee23

Owning your own company does not allow the owner to pay employees whatever they want. Business owners can pay exactly or above the federal minimum wage; they cant pay one sex more than another for the same amount of work and job title, and so on. So, your point misses much of the mark of this discussion. Using broad generalizations such "Bleeding Hearts" often just makes the poster look ill informed, IMHO.

fishingblues
fishingblues topcommenter

@dlee23

... and speaking of (purposely) missing the point.

Additionally, if you are that sensitive about being a "bleeding heart liberal", after you have a good cry, perhaps you might think (A foreign concept to a liberal, I know) about a more conservative approach.

dlee23
dlee23

Heh, hardly a lib, which is why your generalizations and assumptions make you look like a moron. Just because someone points to flaws in your point is no evidence of that person being pro or con of whatever your point was. Something obvious to those that have any grasp of logical debate. I consider all approaches and facts which naturally puts me at odds with the fringes of both the right and the left.

fishingblues
fishingblues topcommenter

@dlee23 Wow, proof that you are a liberal:

1.  You deny being liberal

2.  You are full of yourself

3.  You are full of shit

4. You are smug and elitist

5.  Liberals love to confuse the issue with bullshit because liberal facts are illusive.

Okay, I'll give you another shot.  Tell me again how this statement misses THE point (not your point):

"Want to be paid more?  Stop whining.  Get an education and work harder."
