Ruben Gallego, Congressional Candidate in District 7, Responds to Name-Change Complaint

It was meant to deliver a blow to Ruben Gallego's campaign for a seat in Arizona's 7th Congressional District, but it seems a complaint suggesting he was "misrepresenting" himself to voters by using various names has created an opportunity for the politician to talk about his hardscrabble life and the challenges he's overcome.

Though the complaint filed against Gallego in Maricopa County Superior Court alleges he never legally changed it, Ruben Marinelarena did legally change his name to Ruben Marielarena Gallego in August 2008, according to Superior Court documents.

"My father abandoned my family when I was young. His choice to leave made my life and the lives of my three sisters much harder. I slept on the floor until I went to college, and my sisters and I had to rely on the free lunch program to make sure we ate. His last name is Marinelarena."

Great strategy, had it come from Gallego's camp.

Instead, Phoenix resident and onetime legislative candidate Mike Snitz filed the complaint in hopes of booting Gallego from the ballot by implying that he wasn't listing his legal name on election related documents.

Ironically, Snitz also refers to Gallego as "Gallegos" in the complaint filed in Maricopa County Superior Court, adding yet another name to Gallego's résumé.

On Snitz's Facebook page -- one devoted to his 2012 run for District 30 -- he notes that he has served on several boards including the Maricopa County Board of Health and was appointed by County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox.

Gallego's statement continues:

I was raised by a single mom and changed my name to honor the woman who raised me. I have been very open about this decision and the circumstance behind it.

My mom is an immigrant and struggled every day to raise four kids on her own. Our family never had enough, but she gave all she had to make sure her kids got an education and an opportunity to succeed. Two of us went to Harvard on scholarships, and my sister is going to be a doctor. My mom's last name is Gallego."

My mom is the reason I have had so many incredible opportunities in my life. I'm very proud to have her name.

In the state Legislature, I fought to make sure working mothers like my own were not taken advantage of by a system that already makes it extremely difficult to raise a child on your own. In Congress, I'll continue to fight for working moms because I know firsthand how far they go for their kids.

Regardless, both names are Hispanic, and both are his own family names. Pulling this issue is ridiculous. Ruben did not wait until just before a tight race in a historically Hispanic-represented district to change his name. And he chose a family name, not the name of a hero with no family tie, no cultural tie and no philosophical tie to himself.

Mary Rose is a sorry excuse for a politician, and using a patsy to file a frivolous (and failed) complaint just goes to show that she is also a sorry excuse for a human being. Enough said.

I'm watching a show on TV right now where the actress changed her last name to her mother's maiden name. This seems like a frivolous complaint.

So the guy who changed his name, and his political party affiliation, in a transparent, ethically-absent move to win votes, is challenging the guy who changed HIS name to honor his mother? Oh my. Only in America.

What an incredibly dick move on Snitz's part. I'm happy it back fired.

So what is the truth, did he hate his last name or did he love it?

Aug 4th 2003 “Coming to New Mexico, would like to meet other Marinelarenas”

“I am actually in Okinawa, Japan serving with the Marine Corps, so contacting family is a pain in the ***…I will talk to my sister to see if she can track down my Dad, to see if he can fill in some of the blanks. If he remembers his grandparents this can make things easier. I hope you find some information that could be a good help. I believe the Marinelarena family has a rich a beautiful history I just wish I can get the full story,

Good Luck,
Ruben

Mary Rose Wilcox, her complete lack of ethics is only beaten by the complete lack of intellect.  What a freaking sleazebag she is.

So what's the real purpose behind the ("Heil!!") Fistler's name change?

Oh I get it. He ain't proud to be white and Republican. His fuck buddies will call him "race traitor!" for that.

It was dismaying to read about this low blow on your part, Mary Rose. Fact is, it's not at all unusual for persons to change their name so as to divorce themselves from an abusive or absent parent. One other person who did exactly that was President Gerald Ford. He was born Leslie King, Jr. A few short weeks after he was born his father deserted the family after threatening to kill his mother. He had only one face to face meeting with Leslie King, Sr. when he was a young adult and that encounter was not pleasant. It speaks very ill of your character, Mary Rose, to pull this pathetic stunt. You need to find something else on which to attack Mr. Gallegos. Maybe something about an important issue where you have a philosophical disagreement with him. Ruben Gallegos' name change is in no way like that of so-called Cesar Chavez. Now, tell us if you dare... does this shameful campaign tactic have anything to do with your low polling numbers?

Do you mean that his doesn't hide that fact that he is from back east and is a first gereration American from South America?

This makes him a carpet bagger and I won't be voting for him to represent my family and I in Congress.

Monica, if you are related to Michael Nowakowski, then you should know that he is the most Machiavellian politico dog in the Maricopa county, right behind Joe Arpaio. Michael even wants to be friends with Joe Arpaio and did nothing during SB 1070 protests or during protest for immigration reform.

And Michael Nowakowski and Gallego are in cahoots, but Michael too pussy cat to show his face.

My opinion of him is the same as yours and I'm not voting for Michael or his carpet bagging buddy, Gallego.

Do you think that Marinelarena could win a political race here?  And much less for a congressional seat?  He's a carpet bagger from back east somewhere and his family is from South America somewhere.

What don't we know about him?  What is he hiding?

sal.krico

It hasn't back fired.  People are now starting to ask who he really is.  And where he's from.  And he's not from our neighborhoods.

He's a carpet bagger.

@SenorSmuckers Tell us you're not on Mary Rose's campaign staff! Even if that Ancestry.com thread is legit and was initiated by Ruben Gallego, how is any of that stuff relevant to voters? Pls explain.

@eric.nelson745

As a voter in District 7, I would like to know who Gallego is.  From what I know he did not grow here in the district or in Arizona, but somewhere back east.  And yes, if he is from South America, worse.

Who is he?  Sounds like a carpet bagger to me.

People who know Mary Rose Wilcox, will vote for her again.  And she has consistently won her elections.

People who don't like her have many other candidates to choose from.

@eric.nelson745 @SenorSmuckers

He may be.  Given that his difficulty with numbers would correlate with the difficulty the Wilcox campaign has with reading.

Senor quotes a post from 2003....Gallego had his name legally changed in 2008.

Likewise, if the guy was looking for other family members, well, that proves what, exactly, SenorStupid?

@sal.krico @eric.nelson745 Ruben Gallego is a U.S. citizen. Always has been. He served in the Marine Corps. Anything else you want to know, you'll have to ask him because I'm not a &%$#^@* information center.

@RobAZ @eric.nelson745 in 2010 during a candidate forum someone brought up the issue and Gallegos reason then was that his father has a criminal past and he was tired of being confused for him or something like that. I do not fault him for the change of names, just the change of story. The lawsuit was silly enough, pulling the mom card is another. Besides, was the father really that bad if in 2003 the family still had contact with him?
