Poll: 41 Percent of Americans Want Decreased Immigration

gallup-immigrants-poll.jpg

A plurality of Americans, 41 percent, think the levels of immigration should decrease, according to a Gallup poll.

According to the poll, 33 percent say immigration should stay at its current level, and 22 percent say it should increase.

As you can see in the chart above, it's the first time since 2011 that more Americans said they'd prefer immigration decreased in the United States.

A statement from Gallup says:
Americans' views on immigration have varied a bit in the past 15 years, with the dominant view shifting between decreasing immigration and maintaining it at the current level. Some of these changes may reflect the ebb and flow of Americans' reactions to the 9/11 attacks in 2001 as well as rocketing unemployment in 2009, with both events triggering a temporary surge in anti-immigration sentiment.
Notice the other side of that -- the proportion of people who want increased levels of immigration have been steadily increasing since Gallup started asking this question back in 1999.

Gallup's also been asking people whether they believe that immigration is generally a good or bad thing, and there's been a slight recent decrease in the number of people saying it's a good thing:

gallup-immigrants-poll2.jpg

"Immigration is central to who Americans are as a people, and what the United States represents, and by and large Americans view immigration as positive for the country," Gallup says in its explainer. "But deciding how many new immigrants to welcome each year can be controversial, particularly when unemployment is high, and seeming competition for good jobs already fierce."

It's definitely not surprising that people with different political affiliations view the issue differently:

And the same goes for education levels:

Actually it's at least 80 percent want decreased immigration.  The 20 percent that want it are the liberals and illegal alien supporters!

More immigrants means more jobs! People think it's the opposite. But if Jose comes here, that means he'll need groceries, gas, a house, a car, all kinds of shit that he'll have to pay for and that creates jobs.

Don't forget about the 33% who said "we're sure as fuck don't want any more of these third-world peasants than we're already getting!"

If we wanted to live in overcrowded, smog-choked, grid-locked squalor we'd all move to Shanghai or Karachi but WE DON'T.

Matthew Hendley, did you run this buy your editor?  Is this a test article to see how many bigots you can get to comment?

For most of you dunderheads, a plurality is the most votes for any choice in an election, but not necessarily a majority.  So in other words - what this study shows is that a MAJORITY of people are of the opinion that the levels of immigration should either stay the same OR INCREASE!

Mr. Hendley TRIES to spin this survey to say that more people want to decrease immigration over those that want it to stay the same or increase or that anti-immigrant sentiment is rising in the US: "As you can see in the chart above, it's the first time since 2011 that more Americans said they'd prefer immigration decreased in the United States."  More than what?  This is an obviously nonsensical statement.  Look back at 2009 when FIFTY percent wanted decreased immigration.

Looking at this chart it is obvious that Mr. Hendley drew that statement out of his ASS!

In 2011, the chart says, the percentage of people who responded they preferred decreased immigration (notice it didn't ask about NO immigration) was 44% (approx).  That means the opinion that we should decrease immigration has actually DECLINED from 2011 to 41%.

Mr. Hendley - just what the hell are you trying to pull with this sloppy journalism?

I guess the Indians should have thought about sustainability also. Then they would have known to massacre everyone on the Pinta, the Nina and the Santa Maria. Then stick Columbus and his men's heads on poles to scare everyone else away. Europeans would think twice about trying to find a shorter route to Asia.

Most Americans are not big fans of overpopulation, cultural fragmentation and collapsing eco-systems.  Mass immigration is unsustainable and destructive.

OK. But as they say, be careful what you wish for. Decreased immigration from south of the border would result in higher prices at the grocery store and at your favorite Mexican restaurant, not to mention every car wash in town. What would happen, see, is that there would be fewer illegals to do the dirty work, making it necessary for businesses to hire real Americans. Those blond and blue-eyed workers would naturally demand higher wages than business owners pay their meskins. Even the more or less authentic Mexican joints would have to bump up their prices by a significant amount. Remember that you heard it here first and don't come crying to me if the bill for a party of five at Arriba induces a massive coronary.

Bullshit!  More illegals mean more crime and less jobs for Americans.  Your Jose is a lawbreaker!  Stop trying to make excuses!!!!

Why do loony liberals keep bringing up the Indians with respect to the immigration issue?  They were not the first ones here.

Fuck you people are ignorant.

@eric.nelson745  Shoulda woulda coulda. The Indians didn't have an immigration policy, look at where that got them.

@eric.nelson745 Fuck the Indians. This is not their country anymore and we're not living in the year 1400 with its attendant human population numbers, negligible carbon emission footprint and sprawling open spaces.

@Gentle_Fern What "mass immigration" are you talking about?  Immigration is what BUILT this country and still provides a great deal of it's economic grown today.

Are you familiar with the term "sustainability"?

An economy based on the constant influx of immigrants is doomed.

Why do you think the current level is insufficient?

@eric.nelson745 I can afford produce produced by americans, I don't eat at arriba, whatever that is, I wash my own car, I do my own yard work, I clean my own house... in short I have no use for mexicans. why would I cry to you over anything? I don't know you and am not of the custom of crying to anybody.

@fishingblues @eric.nelson745 Aborigines from Australia were.  But that doesn't matter, what matters is that we live on what is essential a space ship.  Boundaries of countries mean nothing in the long run, in fact they are antithetical to the continued existence of the human species and the ecosystem which allows our species to exist.  If we don't take care of each other and stop this boom and bust cycle of war and poverty, we can kiss our asses goodbye in 1000 years.

@armandocdll81 @eric.nelson745 Actually armandocdll81, there is a LOT of land in the United States that is STILL owned by Native Americans and I'm not talking about the Reservations.  In the Americas (North and South) there is probably MORE land owned by Native Americans than by the European invaders.

Gentle_Fern

@ExpertShot @Gentle_Fern Mass immigration - more than a million legal immigrants per year at a time when our population is quickly accelerating towards the 400 million mark, at time when millions of Americans are out of work, at a time when most of the southwest is suffering from years of drought. Until we get our own house in order we cannot and should not accept so many immigrants.

@eric.nelson745  Well if we had no Mexicans to do the peon work you describe and all the produce prices suddenly increase my wife and I will just have to sacrifice and cut back on the 2 trucks of lettuce we have delivered and eat weekly.

Borders and boundaries and import/export policies are critical to economies.   Welcome to the real world.

So, when proven wrong, the loony liberal mentality diverts the argument to something else?

If the American Indian were not the first inhabitants, why do liberals not claim that the Indians stole the land from the original inhabitants?  what is the purpose of demonizing the Western Europeans?

"Boundaries of countries mean nothing..."  Sounds like something George Soros and the new world order loons would say.

You realize, don't you, that the population that was here when Europeans arrived took the land from the previous occupants.  There have been multiple waves of immigration and conquest.

@Gentle_Fern @ExpertShot A time when farmers can't get enough help to bring in their crops and they lay wasted inthe fields, you're going to ask that migrant workers be turned away?  You might want to look at the history of migrant workers in this country - most immigration in to this country has NOT been legal, but illegal.  Quite a few refugees from World War II came over without proper immigration documents.  It's also the case that those who stay here without proper immigration status are eventually deported.  Don't worry your pretty little hate-for-immigrants head about it. Here's a little educmacation for you - please review it and stop spouting gibberish:

We're talking about halting the influx, not getting rid of those that are here or any future generations of them that fail to get an education.

We've already got more cheap labor than our economy should be reliant upon.

@fishingblues @ExpertShot Hate is not a liberal or conservative trait - why did you think that it was?  It's the things we hate that are different.  Conservatives tend to hate things that are different than them (BTW - that's the dictionary definition), whereas Liberals tend to hate the things which they can not change for the better (like racism, bigotry, poverty, etc.).

fishingblues
fishingblues topcommenter

@ExpertShot

I think you are confused, not to mention deluded and slightly full of yourself (typical liberal).  "Liberals hate things they cannot change for the better..."  Jazus, what a freaking joke that was.

Liberals hate things hey cannot control, liberals are the ones who hate everything that is different from them (the dictionary would call that being a bigot).  Liberals hate all things conservative.  Liberals hate competition. But most of all liberals hate themselves.

valleynative

@ExpertShot @valleynative @john043012

Calm down.  Take a couple of deep breaths.

I don't think anybody said that we could halt the influx.

The article is about people wanting to decrease the influx, and the subsequent discussion of "halting" it was purely theoretical.

Try not to call other people "moron" when you're talking nonsense, yourself.
