Traffic on Phoenix highways can be frustrating, but it actually doesn't get any better in other big cities.

According to the annual report released by GPS-maker TomTom, using its data, Phoenix again had the best traffic of any city with more than 1 million people.

Out of the 63 largest cities in North America (plus Brazil, for some reason), 54 have traffic worse than Phoenix.

Congestion around Phoenix did increase from 2012 to 2013, according to this data.

For every hour driven during rush hour, there's a 17-minute delay due to traffic, meaning someone with a half-hour commute would be delayed 50 hours a year. That's more than two days a year sitting in traffic, and two hours more than was estimated in 2012.

Interestingly, in 2012, Wednesday evenings and Thursday mornings had the worst traffic on average. In 2013, Tuesday mornings and Thursday evenings were the worst.

As you can imagine, Los Angeles has the worst traffic in the United States, followed by San Francisco, Honolulu, and Seattle. Click here to see the full report.

Even when you are stuck in traffic in our freeways here it still is a gazillion times better than being stuck on the 405 in rush hour in Cali.... main reason I came back to Phoenix...

Phoenix is in fact a big city, just not a conventional one that people typically think of when they think of a city. The fact of the matter is that Phoenix has a better civil engineering plan than that of other cities in the US. Phoenix is about 100 years younger than most other American big cities on average and this means that Phoenix has the clear advantage of technology on their side. Phoenix has learned from other cities and their mistakes, and have built a much more manageable and traversable highway/freeway system because of it. All without the help of the National Interstate system.
