Phoenix Named One of the Best Cities for Drivers

Phoenix truly is a good place to be a driver. Well, compared to everywhere else.

Yet another look at driving-related statistics has placed Phoenix among the top American cities to drive.

-Phoenix Traffic Still the Lightest Among America's Biggest Cities

The latest analysis comes from the personal-finance website NerdWallet, which developed its ranking using the following measures: annual hours of commuter delay, population density, gas prices, insurance premiums, and rainy days per year. (It seems like cheating to include rainy days, but it really wouldn't affect Phoenix's ranking much.)

Phoenix ranked fourth, behind Albuquerque, Tucson, and El Paso.

Phoenix's high ranking is no surprise. Insurance industry data have shows Phoenix is the safest big city city in the country for drivers, based on crash statistics.

GPS data have also shown that Phoenix has the lightest traffic of any big city in America.

If you've spent a decent amount of time driving around the country, then you already know that the road quality here is well above average.

The only gripe we have with this list is Tucson's ranking. While Tucson did well in these measures, it's been reported many times -- and should be no secret to anyone who drives around Tucson -- that the physical conditions of many of the roads in the city are poor. Several years ago, the local paper reported that 13 percent of the roads were "in such bad condition that repaving in not an option."

The website also released a list of the worst cities for drivers, with no surprises: New York, San Francisco, Washington D.C., and the rest of the usual suspects were all called out.

Phoenix has more bad drivers than I encounter in the Salt Lake valley, but what these guys lack in quantity they make up in quality. These people are morons...

That said, the Metro area contains around 2.5 million people, about half as many as Phoenix .Rush hour here is FAR shorter and moves much faster than I ever encountered in Phoenix.

If Phx is 4th best in the nation, then the rest of the big cities must make you consider suicide on a daily basis.

BTW, what's with all of these Rah! Rah! Phoenix articles? You guys get some kind of Grant from the Downtown Council or something?

Having living in DC and Miami for several years, I can attest that our road conditions and traffic are awesome in comparison.

Bullshit!  People drive like maniacs here just like the illegal alien bitch without a drivers license and insurance who ran into me at the intersection of 19th Avenue and Baseline last year!  Thank goodness I have full coverage insurance!  Of course her car was totaled and that's a good thing!

I think it is because the streets are mostly north/south and east.west so that makes it easier to find where you are going. The terminology might have been better if it said street friendly cities. But there are just way too many crazy drivers.

It is an unwritten law that is followed in almost every state except this one.

It starts with US, people. Look at the attitudes we have toward each other here. People lose their cool way too fast over position in traffic or missing a light. I heard a traffic reporter say "pack some patience on your way out the door, it's getting off to a rough start..." keep calm and drive on peeps, it's not anything personal...it's getting from point A to point B in one piece that matters.

I'm from the East Coast and have been in PHX 3+ years; have to say, the roads here are in great condition. Traffic can be bad during rush hour, but I've seen worse. A LOT worse. So, I agree it's a great place for drivers. It's very vast and spread out, but getting from point A to point B is pretty effortless. (As for the "bad drivers", that's a whole other story. There are a lot of transplants out here. Can't blame AZ for how they were taught to drive and how they choose to drive. Idiot drivers are all over this beautiful country of ours.)

Someone was paid off. This 'alleged news' makes me believe there is absolutely no hope for our species to drive decent if these are actual facts. :(

Lies!! All Lies!! Too many people who don't know how to use their turn signals, know how to stop at stop signs, they have their phones stuck to their faces, have no respect for other vehicles, bikes or pedestrians, and not to mention all the lead foots. Yeah, I like taking my chances, going Anywhere in Arizona. NOT!!

Garbage, disgusting, absolute trash ass drivers!!! I can think of 1000 more adjectives to describe the horrendous driving in AZ. Chicago & Washington have the worst damn potholed roads, but I'd rather drive thru those places than here ANY damn day. Damn retarded ass, I don't know what a turn signal, wtf are lights, road rage havin, I want to end your life, you can't get over EVER- fuck ass drivers. An accident during rush hour? Take the streets immediately. Like pronto. You will be on the freeway for 2 hours! and when you actually see the mini accident that is backing up traffic for miles, you will want to blow something up. AZ have the worst drivers period.

The roads are great compared to other cities but the drivers are crazy! No one does the speed limit, road rage, no turn signal, no courtesy letting others change lanes, tailgating, debris all over the roads, and I could keep going on and on!

The roads are bigger here in Phoenix compare to other cities.

there is no such things as a fast lane. ask any cop or driving teacher. the fast lane is a myth.

there is a 2 mile stretch of road along my neighborhood where you can guarantee an accident once a month.

I can't believe Phoenix is named one of the best cities for drivers! NOT! Phoenix has the worst drivers out there! Idiots don't know how to drive!

So funny people complaining about drivers in AZ. This for the most part is a transplant state. Most of the drivers learned how to drive someplace else.

Another B.S. Study, we are number 1 in red light running, 40 % of wrecks are at intersections! it's a competitive sport here. We are one of the top most dangerous metro areas to drive. Speed kills

Mary Lloyd

Who came up with this? This is the red-light running capital. I've seen several people go thru the red light when it solid red.... I've seen drivers going from the far left lane wanting to make a right turn right now - cutting people off causing near rear-enders. I've seen drivers driving in the dark without their headlights on. AND seeing wrecks and having the responsible party just drive away or jump out of their car and take off....My car insurance is twice as expensive $$ as it was in Washington State.

There may be no traffic or potholes but as for the drivers themselves... Well I think most of them need retake drivers Ed

Or Chicagoland. Driving the roads here is not inlike navigating the surface of the moon.
