Marijuana-Legalization Group Calls It Quits on Trying to Get Issue on Arizona Ballots in 2014

Arizona voters won't be deciding on whether to legalize marijuana this year.

It's not the most surprising result, but the group that had been gathering petition signatures, Safer Arizona, released a statement on its Facebook page marking the end of the group's effort.

The initiative wasn't seriously funded -- according to the Facebook post, they only raised "a few thousand dollars" -- which is kind of step one for these things.

The group is gearing up for 2016, when the marijuana-legalization effort in Arizona will get some serious help.

The national Marijuana Policy Project plans to work to get marijuana-legalization measures passed in 10 states, including Arizona. They'll need to collect more than a quarter-million signatures just to get it on the ballot.

In addition to these ballot petitions, Democrats at the state Legislature proposed both marijuana legalization and decriminalization bills this past year, although they didn't make it far.

This effort was doomed from the start. NO financial backing, NO volunteers, just a couple of guys who at the VERY least, got OFF of their asses and at least tried.

MPP

even announced they were going to do this in 2016 and they STILL tried. I admire the ambition, but NOT the decision go it alone. It makes the movement look WEAK when something like this happens.

Legalization or decriminalization will take careful planning and MONEY to pass via voter initiative. Might as well wait for Hell to freeze as to wait for our legisature to do anything that might benefit the average person. They only pass bills when palms have been greased and the fix is in.

I wonder, did they just get a major case of the munchies and needed to stock up on Cheetos?

Legalization will happen, but things like this move slowly!
