Jan Brewer: State Had No Idea Migrants Were Being Dumped in Arizona

Governor Jan Brewer says neither her office nor the Arizona Department of Public Safety had any idea that the federal government was dumping off migrants by the busload in Phoenix in Tucson.

Brewer, in a letter to President Obama, says her administration learned from news media reports that about 400 migrants were flown to Phoenix or Tucson from Texas, where they had been taken into custody by Border Patrol.

According to reports, federal authorities say there's no room at detention facilities in the southern edge of Texas, so migrants from Central American countries who've been apprehended recently have been transferred to other locations.

The migrants have been dropped off at bus stops, and told to report to the nearest Immigration and Customs Enforcement office within 15 days.

"Media reports indicate that many of the illegal aliens that DHS is releasing into Arizona from Texas are women, children, and unaccompanied juveniles," Brewer's letter says. "The reports also indicate that DHS has abandoned these individuals at the bus stations without any food, water or basic necessities. I remind you that the daytime temperatures in Arizona during this time of year are regularly more than 100 degrees. Consequently, this federal operation seems to place expediency over basic humanitarian concerns. The federal government should not shirk its lawful responsibility to care for and properly process these individuals."

Indeed, there have been local volunteer groups in both Phoenix and Tucson that have been trying to help feed and house some of these families. (Find a report from Phoenix here, and Tucson here.) Those volunteers say this has been going on for months, but not on this scale -- not with hundreds of people being released in one weekend.

Brewer's tone in the letter -- which you can read here -- is reminiscent of her finger-wagging days, when anti-immigration rhetoric was her bread and butter.

"Our nation and the State of Arizona face significant challenges stemming from your administration's refusal to carry out its responsibility to secure our country's southern border," the letter says. "State and local governments, law enforcement agencies, health care providers and non-profit organizations are all stretched to the breaking point attempting to manage the enormity of these challenges. By systematically transporting and releasing more illegal aliens into Arizona, your administration will exacerbate this problem."

There was a point to the letter -- Brewer's seeking answers to questions about this dump-immigrants-at-bus-stops policy:
1. Who authorized this policy, and why has the federal government selected Arizona as the target?

2. When was the policy initiated, and how much longer is the operation expected to proceed?

3. How many aliens have been transported from other states to Arizona and released through this operation?

4. How many aliens have designated Arizona as their ultimate destination?

5. How many aliens are designated as a "family unit," and how many have been designated as "unaccompanied juveniles?"

6. What does the federal government know about the backgrounds and histories of the aliens being transported and released in Arizona?

7. What proactive steps is DRS or any other federal agency undertaking to establish emergency housing/detention space to properly process those aliens?

8. What has caused this massive influx of illegal aliens such that federal operations in Texas are unable to handle the processing of these individuals?

9. What is being done to secure the border in Texas to prevent the continued illegal crossings that have "forced" the federal government to transport illegal aliens from Texas and release them in Arizona?

Parents sending their minor children so far from home are guilty of a crime. The Federal Government compounds the crime by leaving them unattended.

Make no mistake, this was an intentional act by BHO's regime to fuck with Jan Brewer.  Barry hates her since she fingered him on the airport runway a few years back and he figged he could get back by dumping mojados in her city.

No wonder people hate the fucker.  He's willing to import (potentially criminal) poverty just to bash a political enemy.

I think we should trade them to the Taliban for more deserters and traitors.

These pathetic refugees should be fed, clothed and repatriated as soon as possible.

Damn Obama is yet again mired in controversy.

While I applaud his work in securing the border, and his attempting to find a humanitarian solution to the immigration issue, this is among the worst things he's done. Dumping people, regardless of immigration status, is plain wrong.

Brewer's letter to the president raises great points. Nice job Jan.

The border is just about as secure as it's ever going to be without stationing troops there to shoot anybody trying to sneak into the U.S. Naturally, that will never happen. Brewer's questions are entirely appropriate. However, I would add "what makes anyone think that busing them to Arizona will make processing their cases easier and more efficient?" This is a real scandal. Heads will surely roll. Anyone who had anything to do with this policy disaster might as well resign right now.

Except for one or two comments, I see the milk of human kindness is flowing all over this story.

This is page one in the conservative handbook (written in crayon)

1. Find an easily identifiable group which has little political clout...........like Latinos.

2. Lie about this group in order to provoke a fear response in your target demographic (ignorant peckerwoods)

3. Make said demographic believe that you're the only ones who can "pertekt" them from the invading horde. (Parade around in BDUs and camo and carry lots of really big guns)

4. Ride the wave of fear to political power.

5 Try to hide your past crimes and your current criminal actions long enough to make it to re-election time.

6. Climb right back on that wave and ride it again

Does any state or community like having hordes of unwashed, illiterate, indigents dumped like so much steaming manure in their midst? Arizona should sue the entities that perpetrated this environmental crime.

Secure the borders dammit!  If the feds won't secure the borders then armed minutemen shall do it!

There shall be no compassion for illegal alien crybaby children who are seeking asylum under false pretenses.

Those illegal alien babies should be used as target practice when they try jumping the fence.

This move is outrageous and will not be tolerated. There are a lot of people who never knew this was happening until it made national news.

See my opinion and more news about it at http://arizonanewtimes.com

I believe this action was a retaliation for Arizona's stance towards illegal immigration. I.C.E. is being controlled by Obama appointees so this is  no surprise. The shame part is we are paying to have our border's protected against stampede's like this and again like everything in the Obama administration there is no accountability. Anyone who believes these people will show up in 15 days for their court appearance is a jerk

@shadeaux

Which handbook is it that says to distort the views of your opponents and then vilify them?

Nobody's lying about Latinos here.  This isn't about "Latinos" at all.  It's about citizens of other nations crossing our borders without going through the proper procedure.

And more specifically, the discussion here is about the federal government dumping these people in Arizona for no valid reason at all.

@armandocdll81 So, the GOP folks in AZ are "hordes of unwashed, illiterate, indigents".  I can't disagree with that!  Just look at the people that vote for Arpaio, Horne, Brewer, et al!

@arizonanewtimes.com The entire feeble minutemen process was a complete and utter failure. Especially when they skimmed it's moronic supporters out of funds to built a fence. It never happened. It's former leaders are all either in jail or unemployed. One of them being a convicted child molester.

If you want to "secure the border", then by all means get off your lazy asses and form a real citizens border guard group and start patrolling the deserts for illegal cesspools. Or take a hue from the now dead neo-Nazi J.T. Ready's Vekol Valley patrols. At least he did something about it, rather than being the whiny little schtick that you are.

@john043012 He was a former Marine. That implies he knew where he was going. Maybe he just wasn't smart enough to know that bringing your own guns into another sovereign country violates international law and the gun laws of that country.

I suggest you research his 13 virtues. Then start applying them to your life.

I seriously wonder if you are a descendant of Himmler, Goebbels, etc?

@arizonanewtimes.com babies cant jump or climb. its the parents that are bringing them here, so why shoot a child who has no choice in the matter? you get more asinine every day. the fact that you want to see children shot speaks volumes about you and your state of mind.

@valleynative @shadeaux ValleyNativist, This is why you are a dumbasss. What these folks did is legal. They went to the port of entry and turned themselves in seeking asylum.

There is a process for that and they are following it and thats why they are now here legally (although their future here is uncertain).

They didn't "cross" any border illegally.  We know how important that is to people like you who seem to think you own this country so stop being so afraid.

They don't want your stuff.

@valleynative @arizonanewtimes.com Well, what else is there to do? Of course I am angry at the feds but because I see no other choice, start picking them off like pigeons. Maybe that will get the message across not to try to come here illegally.

You see, it is not any humanitarian issue - it is all planned and staged just to look that way.  We don't want them here as it is costing taxpayers billions of dollars.  All this false compassion must and will stop.

Yes, it's all planned and staged, but not by the kids.

Suggesting violence against children is playing right into the hands of people who want to portray anybody who is against completely open borders as being "uncivilized".
