Andrew Thomas Qualifies for Clean Elections Commission Funding

Andrew Thomas, who infamously abused his power as Maricopa County Attorney and had his law license taken away, has qualified for $754,000 in public funds for his gubernatorial campaign.

The Arizona Secretary of State's Office confirmed on Thursday that a supplemental filing of 259 five-dollar contributions Thomas made on Tuesday put him over the top for the 4,500 he needed to qualify for Clean Elections Commission funding.

A few of the new contributions were found to be invalid, but 234 of them were deemed okay, meaning he's "hereby approved for funds," the confirmation letter signed today by Ken Bennett, Secretary of State, says. Bennett, by the way, is the only other GOP candidate to qualify for public campaign funding so far. Several other candidates are participating in the program but haven't yet submitted their contributions.

If that doesn't frighten you, how about this: In a six-way Republican primary, fast approaching on August 26, Thomas only needs 17 percent of the vote to win. With no one GOP candidate emerging as a clear front-runner in the pack, a Thomas victory is certainly possible, battered reputation aside.

Have we told you lately how awesome Christine Jones is? And Scott Smith -- what a mayor! Doug Ducey, Ken Bennett and -- some other guy. They've got to be better, no? You don't want the tainted Thomas going up against Fred DuVal, the sole Democratic candidate for the governor's race, do you?

Not that we're taking sides. If Thomas can win, more power to him. It might even be fun to cover his antics as a journalist -- sort of a return to the Ev Mecham days, we figure. Then again, with his personal beefs, proven bad judgment and disrespect for the law, he could do a lot of damage if voters give him real power.

At the least, it'll be interesting to see how Thomas spends his sizable pot of Clean Elections money.

No mention of ballot qualified Libertarian Party candidate Barry Hess?  I would think based on my knowledge of Barry Hess that Hess is at LEAST as likely to be an agreeable Governor of Arizona as any of those Old Party candidates might be.  http://hessforgovernor.com/

Giving Andy Thomas his clean elections money is sort of like giving a handgun to a 6 year old. You don't know how it will end but you're pretty sure its going to make the news.

I can't believe this douche-nozzle actually found racist, loony teabaggers to give his sorry ass money.

I will be working my ass off to see someone who isn't mentally unstable elected to office. Even though I am out of state.

OK, so with this funding, I want to see EVERY dime Candy gets to be used to repay the taxpayers for the $28 MILLION his corruption and stupidity cost the taxpayers before he got disbarred...  And when he gets a real job, all that money his stupidity and corruption cost the taxpayers AFTER he was out of office!

So part of me wants to say "Yeah! Go! Run Andy, run!" knowing that he's got as good a chance as any to come out of the assclown circus that is the GOP primary. Let him win with his miserable 17 percent of the vote, and face off against DuVal in the general election. Once he opens his trap and starts regurgitating his "everybody is corrupt except me!!" conspiracy theories (wonder if he'll bring his "Walking Tall" stick to the debates?) and the media starts reminding us about his past (his disbarment for abusing his office; his attempts to justify the facist-style arrest of journalists who criticized him; his past in an uber-kooky right-wing "think" tank writing papers that advocated shutting down daycare centers, among other odious things) then DuVal should just cruise to victory in a landslide, right?

...Then I wake up from my dream and remember this is Arizona, the state that once elected the almost-as-kooky Ev Mecham to be its governor, and this state has only become kookier and crazier since then. There is probably a better-than-average chance that if Andy makes it out of the primary, he will be elected our next governor. (Unless someone gives DuVal a fuckton of money and he actually develops a personality that doesn't resemble a bowl of cold oatmeal.) And Andy Thomas as governor would probably make nutty ol' Ev look like Napolitano by comparison. It could get very, very, very ugly in this state very quickly under Governor Thomas

I'm with Cozz, if Thomas becomes governor I might be forced to say "fuck everything" and get out of here before the shit hits the fan. (Or maybe we'd get lucky and the feds--once Arizona is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, being boycotted by every sane organization, and Phoenix and Tucson are burning with riots--would finally declare Arizona a "failed state" and move in and take over....)

Got some great news today about a close and dear friend. Rumor has it Marshall David Gonzales is going to run for Maricopa County Sheriff in 2016.

What a nice change this will be when we get him elected. As much as I dislike politicians and politics, You can believe I will be working hard on his campaign when the time comes.

Bringing honesty, integrity, ethic's and accountability back to the cesspool of corruption called Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is something that's been needed for way to long.

Time for Bozo Joe Arpaio to go !

Time to show Bozo Joe the door, show him he can't buy votes with his never ending bullshit and out of State money.

2016 will be a great year for MaricopaCounty !...The time is coming to clean house !

Go David !

So now he's going to rip off the clean election campaign funds to pay his personal expenses and play it off as used for campaigning for office

Just another slimeball move by Thomas.

If this dirtbag mother fucker gets elected as Governor, I will let my house go into foreclosure to move the fuck out of this insane asylum called Arizona.

"Andrew Thomas" and "Clean Elections" is an oxymoron.

Not to be confused with Rush Limbaugh who is an oxi-moron.

3/4 of a MILLION of OUR  dollars for this clown to is simply INSANE.  He should have not only been disbarred but locked away in prison for his actions.

As mentally sick as the GOP and the voters are in Arizona, you just never know what might happen.

Who would have ever though the douchebag GED Brewer would have gotten reelected, but she did.

Nothing surprises me anymore in this Desert Racist Wasteland.

Right now its only a rumor, David is still the US Marshall here for Arizona and will be until he decides otherwise.

Until he makes the announcement, it's speculation :-)

But trust me, when the rumor becomes reality, we'll take all the help we can get to deport Bozo Joe Arputo to Mexico where he belongs.

You should know by now that Ethic's are not a requirement to be a politician in Arizona, in fact, having Ethic's hurt your chances of being elected to office here in Arizona.

MaskedMagician1967

It could be worse CC.

If President William Howard Taft had his way, we wouldn't even be allowed to recall our politicians. Thankfully people in 1913 put the recall provision back in.

Sad isn't it that the bigger criminal you are, the higher office you can hold in Arizona.
