Pot Smugglers Lose $1.2 Million of Product Trying to Hide it Among Jalapeños

About 2,400 pounds of weed, after its removal from a shipment of jalapeños.

Today in Found at the Border: Pot-smugglers are now short $1.2 million worth of product after trying to hide their stash in a load of jalapeños.

This is hardly surprising, as the pot-in-the-jalapeños plot is one of the oldest tricks in the book of Mexican drug-smuggling.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the 50-year-old Mexican truck driver had a load of pot totaling more than 2,400 pounds he tried to bring through Nogales on Wednesday. A drug-sniffing dog did him in, according to the agency.

Perhaps there's some sort of theory going around the drug-smuggling community that dogs will get confused by the scent of peppers, which obviously isn't true.

We've documented several cases of people trying to hide pot or other drugs in shipments of jalapeños (example 1, example 2), bell peppers, and even a guy who tried to get himself over the border by hopping into a pile of chili peppers.

Cartels should lose all their product due to discovery.  Thumbs up to Border agents for making the bust.

Can we reprint some articles talking about moonshine getting seized just for some perspective on what a waste of time and money the "war on drugs" is?  They had to come up with some fresh work for cops once booze was legalized, the endless war on drugs has served to keep the criminal justice system rolling in dough for decades.

Let's just call the war lost, fire 1/2 the cops, close 3/4ths of the jails, turn 1/2 the courthouses in the half-way houses and call it a day?

Waste of time and money trying to intercept dope from Mexico.  Other than keeping a bunch of wannabe Rambo cops employed what does anyone think is accomplished?

Yes, people never learn to just legalize it. Then the problem wouldn't exist in the first place!

Its a weed, it cost them virtually nothing to replace.

So, what happens to the jalapeños?

None of them, dispensaries don't sell cheap Mexican weed. See www.leafly.com for reference.

@Flyer9753  ... sells for $800 / lb wholesale in NY, or $1200 /lb retail.

$1.2 million becomes 1.92 million after a 2 day drive.

$360,000 / day = not bad work if you can find it.

hth.

@DonkeyHotay @Flyer9753  I know, I am just really surprised it was listed that way.

Usually they list that as street value, which $500 a pound is not, to make it look better for themselves

You illustrated where the prices come from in your comment above this one...
