Cox Communications is establishing super-fast Internet service in the Phoenix area with speeds on par with Google Fiber.

The announcement from Cox comes just a few months after Google announced it planned to offer gigabit broadband service, which Google has billed as "100 times faster than today's basic broadband."

Google Fiber's planned expansion to Phoenix also includes Tempe and Scottsdale, but Cox's gigabit service will include Chandler, according to Chandler Vice Mayor Rick Heumann:

A download speed of 1 gigabit per second is 20 times faster than Cox's "premier" Internet service, which boasts download speeds up to 50 megabits per second.

Check back for updates.

UPDATE 12:13 p.m.: Check out this promo video from Cox -- gigabit speeds are supposed to hit Phoenix this year.

So....what's going to happen to current Ultimate subscribers?  Are we going to get doubled to 300Mbps?

Remember when Cox phone/internet was roughly $52/mo.  Every year rate increases.  Same theme, equipment/infrastructure upgrades.  Same old wires outside the house, same speed or less, same fake L.A. speed test.  So it must be those outrageous commercial property taxes they keep stuffing the rates with.  Or bigger chairs and desks on high speed rollers. For twice the price for the same stuff I gave up.

Cox will give you gigabit internet and then throttle it after you've used more than 13 hours at that speed.  They should call it gigabit for half a day internet.

BTW, other than trying to make it very difficult for people to cancel their service, why does Cox require you to call on a telephone to cancel?  You can sign up online, you can change your service online but they absolutely will not let you cancel unless you write a letter or call.

Fortunately they have the finest CSRs that $1/hr can buy with their outsourced to some third world hell hole customer service. They speak English at the third grade level and understand spoken English about as well as 3 year old.

Kicked them to the curb just like I kicked Qwest phone service to the curb a decade ago.  Cell phone internet, tethered and no additional cost.

I don't understand why so many people are eager to turn their entire lives over to Google.

I guess it's the same mindset that wants the government to be responsible for solving all of their problems.

I'll bet most of these same people think Big Businesses are too powerful.

I just want my contour to work as promised. Long time Cox customer. .. Really disappointed.

I'm on top tier with cox using their modem and the full works. My wifi STILL drops in and out..in a new house and neighborhood. Yes, I use a channel analyzer too.

Too little, too late. I will still drop Cox like a bad habit if Google Fiber becomes an option.

Cox is a over priced rip off.

Great. Now let's encourage the FCC to properly identify TWC and other ISP's as common carriers, the expectation consumers have the benefit of assumption to hold. Gigabit will mean absolutely nothing without neutrality. Net Neutrality in the US: Now What?: http://youtu.be/NAxMyTwmu_M

Shocking but true, one of my coworkers in Austin is now paying less to get 384 Mb up/down from At&t thanks to Google.

Cox's ultimate is a ripoff you never reach the speeds they promise

Also if you only use a few devices this will mean nothing for you lol

Google Fiber doesn't have data caps and I expect them to be cheaper since they don't have to subsidize old hardware and a dying cable TV industry.

Well since cox is one of the companies that lobbied for the end of net neutrality I will definitely be switching to Google service.

Yeah, I'm with you. I'm already paying too much for my current Cox internet service. Just waiting on Google for Tempe!

Agreed. I just cancelled my cox service - both internet and television. It's not worth the cost and talking to anyone in their customer service dept is a bitch. Always trying to up sell something and change your packages for "optimal savings" that just increase the price you're already paying. Google has already said services like Netflix will get FREE access to their "fast lane" unlike other ISP's who will be raping services like Netflix because they are killing cable. Hopefully if AZ gets it Mesa will be too.

I for one will switch the very day Google comes to town. Google will crush Cox with their prices.

Cox ripped me off for years with slower than advertised internet service speed billed at an exorbitant price... Just sayin. Yep- that's my experience.

It's Cox... they will completely rip you off wanting to use it.. I pay $70 and I think I'm on the 3rd tier of service... and its spoty I want google in chandler =/

Jim La Rose

How close in price will it be to Google though? That's the big question!

WTF....
WTF....

FUck ya I'm ready!... Problem is it will be over $200 until google fiber comes in and can compete Cox

Means nothing to me, Cox doesn't even have kilobit dial-up access in my area.

Fuck yes. I don't care what it costs. I already pay for the Premier service, which is more-or-less fine (run a home business that heavily relies on a fast pipe) but I'll definitely be glad to watch cat videos in 4K.

And you can bet they'll charge Gigabucks for it.

@valleynative

How is signing up for Google internet service turning your life over to Google?

Will they move into your spare bedroom and start redecorating the living room?

marcy

If you are a long time unhappy customer you must be a slow learner.

Cox doesn't appreciate long time customers, in fact they charge you more than a new customer.

The solution is simple, dump them.

There's no reason Cox should have anything to do with your wifi signal.

Buy a better router.

WizardOfZid

I've been on Cox but changed to DSL/Direct TV when the cost was just too high.  Recently went with Centurylink Prism and have a 12MB down, 5 MB up.  Google is not a talking point out in the West Valley - same with Cox so for now Prism is the choice.

I'd jump to Google if it becomes avaialble.

@Cozz I think it's a great service. I get blazing fast internet and I can easily afford it. When you find yourself opining about "overpriced" (one word, btw), it might be because you're just not valuable enough to the world to be able to afford that which you're whining about. That's not the fault of Cox Communications, that's your fault, or your parents' fault for providing you with subpar genetic material to work with. Identify your place and be content with it. The world needs janitors and people to dig ditches, you are needed.

RobertGraham29

Actually I get much faster speeds than what I am supposed to be getting. Check your signal strength.

@shadeaux do you want a subsidy for your internet as well as your health insurance, food, housing, transportation... Maybe everything should be free just because your mommy pushed you out.

@somebodyshagthisgirl @marcy

I don't work for Cox like you do so I'm anything but sad or bitter.

I noticed you didn't comment on their policy of throttling people if they use their service at the advertised rate and you also didn't comment about their policy of making it difficult to cancel service.  I'll just put you down as a shameless Cox employee.

Like I said, so wireless with a cell phone provider and cut the Cox cord, cheaper, less hassle and it works wherever you go.

Cox is a dying animal, just like Qwest/US West was.  They'll keep jacking the rates until even people like somebodyshag realizes they are complete morons for continuing with Cox.

The more you rely upon any single source for things that are important in life, the less freedom you have.

ssid

@valleynative I think Cox might have some all-in-one modems/routers available. this is the reason that people should buy separate units, each designed for a particular task. petey probably bought one of those TV/VCR combo things back in the day.

marcy

@WizardOfZid

Only dimwits wouldn't jump to Google if given the opportunity.

Cox relies on the frog in the pan of water situation, just keep jacking rates every year and the frog doesn't realize he is being cooked.

@isnthespecial @shadeaux  No he probably wants free market prices based on free market competition, rather than having to pay inflated prices to a company that benefits from a near monopoly status created by government regulations.

@valleynative @marcy ... is Google the "source" or merely the datacom that delivers info from myriad other sources?

Is Amazon "the source", or merely a repository of myriad 3rd party sources?

@lmsp @isnthespecial @shadeaux You really think that internet service in this country is based on a "free market"? You are so PRECIOUS!!!...I think it's nice the unaware have access to computers....

REAL freedom is clearly the freedom to be stupid....
