Marijuana Advocates File Petition to Recall Senator Kimberly Yee

People from the Phoenix chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) are going to try to force a recall of Republican Senator Kimberly Yee.

Yee, who's been one of the biggest opponents of Arizona's voter-approved medical-marijuana law, is being targeted after blocking funding of a study of marijuana as a treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder among military veterans.

The group trying to recall Yee is calling itself the Arizona Veterans Assistance Committee. Paperwork filed with the Secretary of State's office lists "marijuana attorney" Thomas W. Dean as the applicant, and former Libertarian candidate for U.S. Senate Marc Victor as the chairman.

They'll need to collect 18,297 signatures from Legislative District 20 by August 2. The district is mostly in north Phoenix, but also contains parts of Glendale.

Yee won reelection in 2012 with 51 percent of the vote (second place was around 37 percent). For the sake of comparison, Russell Pearce won reelection in 2010 with more than 56 percent of the vote, before being recalled the following year.

Even if the group did get enough signatures, Yee is still up for reelection this year anyway.

The recall statement calls Yee's blocking of the bill a "callous abuse of power."

The proposed study at the University of Arizona, which received rare federal approval, would have used funds raised by the sale of medical-marijuana cards for partial funding, under the bill Yee blocked.

The bill had passed the House on a 52-5 vote. NORML supporters rallied at the capitol on Wednesday in support of the bill, and against Yee, who prevented the bill from being heard in a committee she chairs.

UPDATE April 8: Yee's response:
"It is unfortunate that the supporters of HB 2333 have decided to distort the intent of the bill and the reason I did not hear this bill in the Senate Education Committee. I am not opposed to university research to assist veterans. In fact, last year I was the lead sponsor of the legislation that even allowed for such research to occur at the University of Arizona, working with veterans and researchers around the table to make sure that bill passed.

Because of my concerns about limited state funds, I received assurances from those supporting such research that funds would come from the federal government or private donations and that no state money would be used. Today, they have turned their story around and have broken their promise. My voting record shows I support veterans and research. This is about how we should use limited state resources and be wise stewards of our taxpayer dollars.

As policymakers, we have to ask if this takes us down the path of legalizing the recreational use of marijuana in Arizona. The bill I proposed this year, SB 1389, using those same funds would educate our youth about the dangers of recreational marijuana and pay for public service announcements to prevent drug abuse.

I am currently working with those in our Senate chamber to determine the best legislative solution for this issue before we end our legislative session. Until those discussions are finalized, I cannot go into further details at this time."

In one of these prescription drug commercials I was watch the other day stated , that one of their side effects is Death.... Since when did Death become a side effect? It is completely legal and no one is trying to stop that drug..... People need to pull there heads out of their asses and see it for what it really is....  Drug companies would lose billion$$$$$ and they would not be able to pay off those politicians for their own greedy agendas....

This is the evil of anti marijuana toadies like Yee they want to use the proceeds from medical marijuana sales to promote anti marijuana propaganda.

She wants to use the funds from Medical marijuana taxes on DARE cop cars at county fairs and your brain is a fried egg TV commercials that do nothing, instead of helping veterans and servicemen with PTSD who are committing suicide at a rate of 25 per day

I personally think a federal study of marijuana is in order, especially given the fact that 20+ states have already legalized medicinal usage.

Once 40 states legalize it I think the Controlled Substances Act should be amended to move marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule V or completely removed altogether (especially given the CSA was passed and signed in 1970, when drug use was rampant. Times have changed).

I suppose it's comforting to know that lunacy exists on the left as well as the right.

This lady,Yee who says she is on the side of the Veterans, but her hidden agenda is to crumble the Marijuana legislation, along with Sheila Polk, their only intent is to reverse the legislation that was voted in and approved, but I guess some people never got the e-mail that this is a legal bill so get over it!!! move on!!! but some hard headed people will not accept defeat by the$$$$$ numbers so they try to act COOL?? I'd say RECALL!! no matter what!

No. I think she is a bad public official and should be voted out of office, but a recall in an even-numbered year is a waste of time and effort. Whatever the outcome, it will be overridden by the general election in November. Better to find and support a challenger to Yee for the regular election cycle.

Her excuse is despicable - "We can't spend money on research that will actually help people because we need to spend it on the proven failure of 'Just Say No' campaigns".

This is a complete waste of time, effort and money.  The earliest a recall election could possibly take place would be well after her current term ends.  If they got 18,297 signatures - which they won't - there would not be a recall election.  The issue would be moot since her term had already ended.

This effort is what one calls dumb.  Really dumb.

BS, the loss of all of those wars occurred at the strategic level.

Yes! I see in the AZ Republic (of all places) that she admits her opposition to the bill is due to the influence of the prostituting attorneys, rather than just about the money.

Whether you support the proposed legislation or not, who the hell does she think she is? She is not a queen. For her to block an up or down vote in such a manor is the action of a dictator not a senator. Recall the witch and ride her out of town on a rail.

Yes! Denying our Veterans the medicine they need and want is wrong! She is in the pockets of big pharmaceutical. They will be funding her next campaign.

I mean on one hand, soldiers getting high was an important factor in the American defeat in Vietnam, so let's acknowledge and celebrate that. On the other hand, I don't see marijuana advocates embracing that history. Instead they are wrapping themselves in the flag and venerating the latest wave of soldiers' "service." Service to what, exactly? Why do I care about their pain more than that of anyone else? Why is this more important than just saying getting high is fun and that's good enough reason for it? Hell, it's true that these most recent vets lost two wars -- I'll give them credit for that -- but it wasn't a deliberate act on their part, unlike their Vietnam-era comrades. At least get some Vietnam vets in the mix. They knew how to stop and war and get high trying.

Nope. Gives her unlimited fundraising capacity to send her to to an election she's heading into anyway. Better to put that energy into her Democratic opponent or into an anti-GOP IE.

yes, they only support vets until it comes to this $$$$$$. They would sooner have us sucking on a pistol then risk losing prisoners from their scam of a prison system they have going.

WHY are the NORML people doing this? Their effort cannot possibly succeed. Better to put their resources behind the challenging Dem. As we've seem several times before, getting enough valid signatures is a very tough row to hoe.

These SAME Prosecuting attys. that have been beaten at EVERY level legally on the Medical Marijuana issue? Didn't Einstein say... "The definition of INSANITY, is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result each time!"? I'm not sure I'd be hitching my wagon to an opinion that's been laughed at by the Courts up to this point. Which is now at the Supreme Court level.

I don't know exactly what led you to believe that the Vietnam war was lost because of some of our service men used cannabis, but it really had nothing to do with it. I wasn't sure if your statement was meant to be sarcastic or not, but that's really the only way it has any merit to it. And I'll answer your question of "service to what exactly?". You, your family, your friends and your children, if you have any. . It is our service men and women who  go and keep our enemy's at bay. More than a few have died so that you still have the ability to write a remark like that and NOT be jailed for it. As to why you should care more about them, than others. While they were fighting to protect your rights, many were exposed to things that no one should have to be exposed to. Agent Orange, the gruesomeness of seeing a buddy have his head blown off or maybe they themselves lost a leg or other body part. Cannabis can be used recreationally, but that's not what this is all about. It's about safely treating PTSD without having to use the very dangerous and often lethal effects of the current prescription medications that are being recommended by the psychiatric board to treat this condition. . It's about getting verifiable results so that we can finally say with confidence wither or not it really helps. Even though many of our Vets have reported a reduction in their symptoms after using cannabis, that's not enough to "prove" it's effectiveness. Many more studies need to be done. Good ones that are open minded and not afraid to report any positive results they might find. Those of us that have fought for medical cannabis know that we keep hearing that people want the studies, but when someone like Yee decides to stand in the way of progress, it's time to send a clear message, Either get on board, move over or be prepared to be swept away, because we are no longer playing nice. We have had it with trying to placate the ignorant that are occupying the political seats that have the power to vote for what is right. Although there is much more research that needs to be done, cannabis appears to be a very good treatment option for a long long list of conditions. Why would you want to block someone from being able to get relief from a nagging medical problem that doesn't come with all the dangerous side effects that most, if not all, Rx's have?

It doesn't hurt to send her the message loud and clear so I say all of the above is necessary.  BTW, is she gerrymander or no?

@eric.nelson745  NORML's mission is to lobby public opinion of marijuana, not to lobby politicians. The public of District 20 should know they have an anti-democratic Senator who refuses to allow our veterans access to the best medicine they can get. Many veterans around the US are using medical MJ to treat PTSD and this study will tell us whether medical MJ truly does, or does not, help in this regard. It's pretty clear as to why NORML would launch the Arizona Veterans Assistance Committee. Who better? And I disagree with your prediction of our efficacy, but thanks for the fuel. :)

@eric.nelson745 you stink like a liberal, it's overwhelming, but at least you got row to hoe correct. @66rock @bobunf  What value?  What message?  Maybe

> Rather they do something that might make a difference, NORML thinks it would be fun to waste time, effort and money on doing something akin to digging a hole and filling it in?

> NORML needn't be taken seriously?

> NORML is really dumb?

HaddieNuff

@AVAC_Treasurer Thank you for pointing out what many seem to have missed: this was to fund a STUDY to determine whether or not MJ helps in treating PTSD. Personally I'd like to know, to have scientific evidence to base a decision upon. At this point there appears to be only over-blown BS.

Of course Yee is a Republican, isn't she? Republicans don't appear to be too interested in science, so I guess it's par for the course?
