Of the 10 most-dangerous suburbs in America, two of them are suburbs of Phoenix.

That's according to the real estate website Movoto, which ranked Glendale as the seventh-most dangerous, and Tempe the eighth-most, based on FBI crime data.

The people who put the ranking together took into account murders, other violent crimes, property crimes, and total crimes, all per 100,000 people, to compare the suburbs to one another.

In Glendale, there were 6,410 property crimes per 100,000 people in 2012, the worst of any suburb. Total crime, at 6,901 per 100,000 was the sixth-highest. Glendale also ranked 18th for murders, and 18th for other violent crimes.

The odds of being a victim of a crime in Glendale in 2012 were 1 in 14.

Meanwhile, Tempe ranked 14th for property crimes and 12th for total crime.

The violent crimes are what put Tempe on the list: with seven murders per 100,000 people, the 11th-most, and 519 other violent crimes per 100,000 people, ranking 16th.

That put your odds of being a crime victim in Tempe 1 in 19 in 2012.

The six most-dangerous suburbs, beating out Glendale and Tempe, were East Point, Georgia; Camden, New Jersey; Miami Beach, Florida; Midwest City, Oklahoma; Miami Gardens, Florida; and Clarksville, Indiana.

Not surprised about Glendale but slightly surprised about Tempe even though it's not the same city I grew up in. I would like to see a map of where the crimes occurred especially in relation to the Light Rail route. I bet there was a jump after light rail went in, and most crimes are probably confined to the areas mostly north of Broadway.

I've lived in Tempe for three years and just experienced an attempted break-in a month ago mostly because I moved into a bad apartment complex for the most part. Other than that nothing bad has happened. We have a very strong police presence here that has done nothing but increase lately. Plus the city is well taken care of…I need more proof of this!

ranking low on a limited list of "safest" does not mean "most dangerous."

Glendale has been run for the last 20 years by a bunch of Good Ole Boys who ransacked the City and ignored its needs.  They were Teapartiers before there was a Tea Party - No New Taxes! Nada.  Now, Glendale is bankrupt, the utility systems are in the shitter, and they are unable to take advantage of the new business enterprises coming in to their community.  All because the Good Ole Boys knew better than them young whippersnappers.  The current Mayor ran against a GOOD Democrat and portrayed himself as being more of the same "No New Taxes" crowd.  Well, everything the Democrat in the race said would happen, happened and everything the man who got elected Mayor of Glendale say would happen did NOT happen.  This City is so screwed up!  I'm glad I only work here and don't have to drink the water - IT IS TOXIC!!!

I know why Tempe is crime-ridden.  All the meth-heads and junkies love to hang out there cause they can live cheap and there's plenty of students to rip off.  I'm surprised South Scottsdale didn't make the list this year - have in the past.

This story is definitely bullshit... These stats must be based on murder/per Arizona residents in Tempe. I would say about 30% or more people living in Tempe arent accounted for in this, because a lot of people in Tempe are visitors from different states/countries going to school or visiting. I work and live in Tempe and have never ran into any problem. If its so dangerous why is Tempe the new home for the USA Olympic Basketball team?

Glendale & Tempe certainly aren't the /nicest/ places around, but some of the most dangerous in the country? This survey has to be monumentally flawed. I'm not a fan of either town but If you're afraid of even going to them, you're just a pussy.

I think this just happens when wealth is concentrated and so many are left without

Seriously? People who are afraid of areas around Phoenix should go drive through South Central or East L.A. or drive up Mt Vernon Ave in San Bernardino.

I've lived in Glendale and Tempe.  It's definitely not that bad.

Small sections of Glendale ruin it for the whole city. Tempe being a college town makes the crime rate high.

This sure is good to know, I was getting ready to move here! I'll be rethinking my decision.

And let's not forget Houston and New Orleans. Where do you get this stuff, New Times? Didn't you learn from your post on the safest towns that people think you're surveys aren't all that credible?

I live in Glendale and i don't find it to be the most dangerous place. Many other cities have crime and are dangerous such as: the East Valley.

Well, people fall out windows, drown and get run over on their first day of college. Maybe we need some drunk death stats.

Jimmy, that is my opinion, and I'm entitled to it. I have lived in Glendale in the past, and yes, there are some nice neighborhoods. The bad areas definitely outweigh the good, IN MY OPINION. Have a great day. :)

South Glendale is pretty sketchy. North Glendale has nicer homes than just about any place in the valley, with the exception of scottsdale.

Glendale is a big place. There are scary spots I suppose, but there are far more, hum-drum burb-style neighborhoods. Way to paint with a BROAD brush there, Heather.
