Tempe Cop Accidentally Hits 14-Year-Old Girl With Taser Probe

A Tempe police officer accidentally discharged the probes from his Taser while showing it to a middle school class, police say.

One of the probes hit a 14-year-old girl in the arm, while the other probe struck a wall. The girl was not hit with the electrical current, since both probes need to hit someone for that to happen.

According to Tempe police spokeswoman Molly Enright, the officer, a designated school resource officer, was speaking to an eighth-grade class at Gilliland Middle School when this happened.

Some sort of discussion followed about the Taser, and the officer -- whose name hasn't been released -- took the Taser out of its holster to give the kids a better look, when he accidentally fired the probes.

The probe, which has a sharp, dart-like end, was removed from the girl's arm at a hospital. The girl was released from the hospital after that.

"The officer has been removed from the school while this incident is investigated to determine how and why this occurred," Enright says in a statement.

That was bright. And what recourse is being taken so this doesn't happen again and what are the repercussions for his actions?

Lots of good suggestions here, or, we could let the situation be handled by people who have all the facts.  Just an idea.

Show-and-tell time gone horribly wrong. A 30-day suspension should be imposed to preclude any similar demonstrations.

The officer should be suspended not just removed from the school during the investigation.

I can't imagine that the school labelled this Gun Safety Day.

@valleynative  everybody will view it different. me personally.........................i view it as a little kid who almost got hurt REAL bad, i also view  it as a kid who could be psychologically scarred. i am NOT saying it was or wasnt an accident or stupidity. i just worry about the kid. when all the facts DO come out??? then i will worry if the cop is a menace or a person who just goofed. priorities.  my priorities lay with the victims well being first

@danzigsdaddy

Sure, but how does punishing the cop help the kid?

I'd like to know that it wasn't a defective Taser before taking any action.

@valleynative i'm not counting that out. i am just saying that concern should be on victim welfare first, determining the cause second, then would come correcting the problem (be it defective equipment or incompetence). i just feel that these days most people arent putting the victims welfare first anymore in way too many cases

@chris.m.robert @valleynative@danzigsdaddy

Unholstering?  Maybe.  Pointing it in a direction that allowed it to strike a student?  That would be a better point.  However, we still don't know the circumstances nearly as well as the people making decisions, do we?
