Puente Supporters to Walk 60 Miles From Phoenix to Eloy to Protest Deportations

Supporters of the pro-immigrant group Puente plan to make the 60-mile walk from Phoenix to Eloy in their latest stunt to protest deportations.

The National Day Laborer Organizing Network, which is behind the national "Not One More Deportation" project, is having a day of action on April 5 to demand the Obama administration stop all the deportations.

Puente plans to start the 60-mile hike at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement headquarters in Phoenix on April 2, and land at the Eloy Detention Center on April 5.

Organizers write on a Facebook page:
We go on foot because this walk is a pilgrimage, a spiritual act, a prayer for our families. We make sacrifices to draw attention to our suffering, in a way that is rooted in our community's traditions.

With each step, we shed light on the otherwise hidden deportation process and demonstrate that there is no such thing as "humane" separation of families, no matter what the President claims to be considering.
Around 2 million immigrants have been deported under Obama, the most that have occurred for any president. About two weeks ago, President Obama ordered a "review" of his administration's deportation policies.

The march planned for next week is just the latest in a long line of demonstrations carried out by Puente, which played a huge role in SB 1070 protests, but has recently been protesting against the deportations.

Just earlier this month, several people camped out outside the Phoenix ICE office, and went on hunger strike, eventually leading to a few people being arrested.

Immigration policy should be changed, but until that happens, people who knowingly violate it do so with the understanding that they will probably be arrested and deported if caught.

There's nothing unjust or inhumane about imposing the known consequence of their actions, any more than it is unjust or inhumane that people are injured or killed when they try to run across a busy highway.

We Americans can wage wars to liberate Nations that hate us, yet we don't treat good hard working Mothers, and Fathers of our own Legal Citizen Children as Human Beings.

This Great Nation of Immigrants was built on far better Principles, and Values than this.

This is America's Darkest Hour.

This is our I.C.E.'d Economy.

 I.C.E. "Put the Car in the 2008 Ditch."

"Blessed are the Merciful, for they shall obtain Mercy."

End this Hitleresque Deportation!

While I award them credit for their efforts, Obama has stated that he cannot unilaterally stop deportations. That's fact.

Personally, I think a review and overhaul of our immigration system is the way to go. Should this be the case, government isn't wasting taxpayer money to deport every single illegal immigrant (at a cost to you, the taxpayer, of $12,500 for a single illegal immigrant deportation.)

Those folks who would become legal citizens (should a path to citizenship be included) would be able to contribute greatly to society (even big business, a friend of Republican politicians, say this is a good idea. Some R's call it amnesty and the "Tea Party" is anti-immigrant.) by paying taxes from their now legal job. Between this (awarding citizenship to certain undocumented immigrants), legalizing pot and legalizing moonshine, each state government plus the federal government would be receiving trillions of dollars in new revenue while saving millions in unnecessary (and expensive) arrests, court costs, deportation costs, jail costs, etc.

The courts would become unclogged, as a tsunami of court cases would be thrown out.

Pols like MontyPug and Arpaio would lose support and eventually their jobs.

If they really want to stop deportations, they should continue walking south into mexico, eliminating the need for us to deport them.

@DNichols

Human Beings who break the law are often separated from their families.

This is a natural and completely reasonable consequence of their own choices.

"Render unto Caesar, that which is Caesar's"

In other words, obey the law of the land.

Did you read anything about Jesus protesting the arrest and punishment of people who had been found to have broken the law?

@DNichols

You don't like my position on deportation, so you slander me by claiming that I support Simcox?

Learn to debate like an adult, please.  If you have a point to make, use reason and logic to make it.  Lies and emotional bait are for children and idiots.
