Maricopa Posse Members Sent Home; Sheriff Arpaio Not Giving Details Yet

posse-suspended-1.jpg
A headline on the Sun City Posse's website states that activities have been suspended.

Members of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office posse in Sun City West and other locations were relieved of their duties and sent home over the weekend in a possible dispute over insurance.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio claims this isn't a "story" yet but may be a "big story" if he's unable to resolve certain issues with county leaders, news media reports say. Arpaio hasn't yet confirmed rumors that the dispute has to do with whether or not the volunteer posse members are covered by the county's insurance plan.

The move to suspend posse operations comes a few months after one Sun City posse member, Phillip Grigg, was stuck with large medical bills after being shot and wounded while coming to the aid of a Phoenix police officer.

The Sun City Posse's website posted an article by YourWestValley.com about the suspension of activities but provides no other details.

Posse members go through several weeks of training classes for their unpaid jobs and get to wear uniforms, pack guns, and help with law-enforcement duties. Arpaio's use of the posse has been controversial in the past, and a judge's ruling made it possible for the posse to keep its finances secret from the public. Still, the posse has been popular with the public, and Sun City residents rely on posse members to help patrol their neighborhoods. The decision to suspend posse operations was announced at a Sun City West Posse open house on Saturday.

Chris Hergstrom, one of several paid Arpaio spokesmen, released a statement on Saturday saying, "This is a preliminary posse decision relating to a county policy. The Sheriff's Office is looking into the situation and reviewing the issues with county administrators."

An e-mail reportedly was sent to several posse members:

"Effective immediately, on March 29, 2014 at 10:00 hours all activities of the Sheriff's Posse of Sun City West were suspended.

The suspension will be in effect until such time as the command staff resolve open issues. The command staff will be sending out periodic emails to keep you apprised of the situation.

We would like to thank everyone for their patience and support during this difficult time.

Thank you,
Commander Don Sampson"

It's unclear how many of the Sheriff's Office's several dozen posse groups are suspended. The West Valley news site interviewed posse members who said Sun City, Sun City West, and Westbrook Village posse members were "sent home indefinitely."

Hegstrom declined comment, referring New Times to other spokespeople who haven't called us back yet. We also left a message for county spokeswoman Cari Gerchick. Check back later for updates on this story.

Ya know, if Arpaio had done this shit LEGALLY, I would have no problem with the posse.

Arpaio should have asked either the BOS or the MCAO if the posse was covered by any type of insurance and if not, if the posse could be covered...

But alas, he didn't (but he led the posse to believe they were covered by all county insurances)....

Thanks Joe for fucking the taxpayers out of even more money....

What happened to the former Sun City M.C.S.O. Posse Member that was recently caught with over two hundred images of "Child Pornography" on his Computer?

His sick M.C.S.O.  Posse story just seems to have fallen of the face of the Earth?

I wonder how many of his sick Sun City Posse Pals he sent dirty child porn  e-mails to?

What a group to have to insure?!

I wonder if this sick fomer M.C.S.O.Pedifile's computer will mysteriously dissapear like Arpaio's sick Pedifile Pal Chris Simcox's computer did?!

What do you think Arpaio, can you cover this one up too?

If you can't just have your Butt Monkey Montgomery grant "Amnesty" through a posh plea deal right?!!

Wait a minute, who's paying for the posse's "training"?

Anyone wanna bet it's the taxpayers?

Another story I saw about this is the shutdown is due to the insurance on posse owned vehicles.  The  posse themselves must pay the insurance on these privately owned vehivles...

LMAO looks like the county's leaders are finally growing some balls in regards to the Fetid Fossil of MCSO....

Glad to see the posse was disbanded. Now let's hope Judge Snow orders their permanent removal.

The old man knew the posse wasn't covered by county insurance.... and the date with Judge Snow is quickly approaching....

I may have to grill up some steak and crack open a fresh beer....

oh.. btw - they are VOLUNTEERS who want to be there... let them pay their own insurance... at least until we see some of the money wasted on and by MCSO paid back

hehe... Dominos starting to fall....

Now they find out about an insurance issue... now the BOS, which is who this would have come from, finds out about it... when the posse has been in operation how long???

Bet that as someone pointed out below, Joe has been saying all along that they are covered, but didn't get it checked, the BOS didn't question (since they never fucking do) and now that the BOS see's Snows writing on the wall, they are finally growing a set and starting to do their jobs.

And don't we have another Snow date this week??? This may just turn out to be a good week after all :)

i have no problem paying in toward Mr. Griggs medical care, but we would have more to give if it werent for all the other "Joe expenses" that we are constantly paying out (one such expense as outlined by the poster "republicans-suck" a few comments down)

I thought after 65 years of age and/or after 5pm people couldn't drive..

The posse reminds me of Cartman on South Park: "Respect my Authority!"

It seems that WE THE TAXPAYERS have been picking up the insurance for the privately owned insane clown posse cars.  And the county is saying they will no longer pay the insurance for a car with 17 clowns stuffed inside, even if they all have rubber noses to protect them all from an impact...

@danzigsdaddy  As he's retired, Griggs as Medicare.  He's got insurance, and therefore, the County shouldn't have to pay a dime.  Or did he for some reason NOT have health insurance - like he didn't believe in "government healthcare"?

@asdfasdf @MaskedMagician1967  WRONG!!!

As shown during the BC Hunt, they use office space, phones, fuel, infrastructure that was paid for with tax payer funds.

The county should never have incurred the expense of car insurance for the posse to begin with Cozz....

I bet we the taxpayers won't get that money back....

@WhoKnows to me it is a matter of helping pay to help a guy who actually tried to help another human being. IF he does have medicare or whatever, thats great, but i feel people who are trying to do the right thing should be helped. i felt the same way with the yarnell firefighters and was disgusted when their families were being denied any assist or payout. i am not a big fan of the posse............but thats only because of Joe and his involvement. maybe i am a softie or too much of a good samaritan, but i try to help everybody. maybe thats just me, but i do see and understand where you are coming from. i cant fault it, but i just want to see people helped (i have my own personal reasons for always wanting to be a savior)

66, the Board of Supervisors are dumber than GED Jan....

They haven't done an audit of MCSO books for 21 years. You are right though. They can and should order audits of ALL agencies under its watch.

66rock

@Cozz @MaskedMagician1967    Which reminds me, is there some reason we can't have that done right now??  Surely the County Board can order an audit of any of its agencies.

Oh that'll be nice to see Cozz...

We can finally see just how much money the old man's truly cost the taxpayers of Maricopa County.... and I bet it's more than what the old man's been telling us and I also think there's a few skeletons in MCSO's closet....

@MaskedMagician1967

Just some more slide of hands by Bozo Joe with the tax payers money.

Can't wait until a full audit is done at MCSO.

YPS and I never did get along, with me believing he/she/it was/is Rachel Alexander WhoKnows.

VN appears to be smarter than YPS, although he/she/it is wrong at times about the facts regarding the old man's bullshit.

Lucky me, I'm from Virginia.

WhoKnows

@MaskedMagician1967  YPS seems to be in a PR spot that requires the defense of MCSO.  But is now just a laugh track on the NT's site...

VN is just as clueless as YPS, and has the same fixation with typos/spelling....  And recall that AZ is ranked 49th in education, so that might also explain "valley NATIVE", and VN's inability to understand simple facts and logic......

WhoKnows

@danzigsdaddy @WhoKnows  In Yarnell, they were employees.  Here, even though the guy was on the posse, he wasn't involved in any actual posse activity. and is not a county employee..

Yes, if he needs help, he should get help.  Maybe his posse can hold a car wash or a bake sale to help him out, but as he's NOT a county employee, he shouldn't be covered by county insurance.

I'm guessing that for some reason, MCSO lead the posse to believe they were covered by county EMPLOYEE insurance, and with Griggs, it's been discovered that they are NOT covered.
