Joe Arpaio's Chief Deputy Jerry Sheridan Mouths Off, Arpaio and Sheridan Head to the Woodshed March 24

Neither Sheriff Joe Arpaio nor his Chief Deputy Jerry Sheridan have been playing by the rules federal Judge G. Murray Snow laid down in the ACLU's big racial profiling lawsuit Melendres v. Arpaio.

And Judge Snow is not amused.

That's the gist of a 17-page order issued Monday by Snow, in which he scolds Sheridan for a training session, where Sheridan referred to the judge's injunction in Melendres as "absurd," "ludicrous," and "crap."

Read Judge Snow's recent order in Melendres taking Arpaio and Jerry Sheridan to task.

The training session, which was videotaped, took place just before an October 18, 2013 sweep of the West Valley by the MCSO, and included the deputies participating in that sweep.

Snow quotes Sheridan's tirade at length, and goes into additional problems with the training, the sweep itself, the MCSO's appointment as community liaison a deputy who was a member of the Human Smuggling Unit, and other matters.

The judge notes that the training session is "in violation" of provisions of his October injunction in Melendres, and he orders that both Arpaio and Sheridan be present in court on Monday, March 24, for a status conference.

Snow writes that the "direction that the MCSO leaders have demonstrated in this training" raises the possibility that Joe's agency "may choose not to be compliant with some or all aspects of this order, or only facially compliant..."

After reading Sheridan's statements to MCSO deputies during the October 18 training, it's evident Snow's concern is well-placed.

According to Snow, the video has Sheridan saying the following to his subordinates:

"With the Melendres case, Judge Snow did not say that we were racist. He did not find that the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office was racist. What Judge Snow found was that three deputy sheriffs used the ICE training that they received by the federal government in determining the alienage of some individuals; to determine whether they were here legally or not. He found that that was unconstitutional.

"He found that we detained Hispanic drivers fourteen seconds longer than non-Hispanic drivers. So, therefore, he found that we violated the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment with those two things. That's why we're here today. And we have the same--this judge put the same constraints on us that a federal judge did with the City of New Orleans Police Department. And their police officers were murdering people. That tells you how ludicrous this crap is."

You think things are fucked up with MCSO now? Wait to see if US Marshal David Gonzales runs for Sheriff. Talk about fucked up and giving positions to friends to watch his back. MCSO will be full of "yes men." I would take Joe over "I am a cop, really, see my badge?" David Gonzales!

Where is the Board of Supervisors in all of this?  Their Sheriff's Department is violating Federal Court Orders, costing the County tens of millions of dollars on this one case (amongst thousands), and the Board does nothing?

Not even calling Arpaio and Sheridan in for a scolding.  Maybe telling them they will have to pay their own lawyers for any contempt proceedings?

What a bunch of total irresponsible twits.

One can only hope, that Judge Snow lower's the boom on this Latino profiling sheriff . Though I have lived long enough to know that this word is neither fair nor just, I wont hold my breath counting on this Judge(NO DISRESPECT). The day Maricopa County has a new SHERIFF, is the day ARIZONA can move towards its destiny and true future...peace

"MCSO leadership may be choosing to present a paper appearance of compliance while at the same time fostering an attitude of contempt and subversion of the Court's orders among MCSO personnel."  That has been the response anytime Arpaio's actions have been questioned and it is bound to be the name of the game here as well.  We could spend time debating whether Arpaio's actions are racist or not.  I have my own beliefs.  What is clear is that Arpaio, Kavanagh, and their fellow republicans are clearly disrespectful to Hispanics in Arizona.  Although some consider Arpaio's actions to be "nativist" it is clear that he is not familiar enough with Arizona's history to know that this land was once a part of Mexico.

When is Judge Snow going to really get tired of of MCSO's  bullshit and put these 2 assholes in jail for contempt is my question.

I wonder what James Madison, the Father of the Constitution and the Father of the Bill of Rights, would say about this bullshit if he was still alive?

I personally think he'd be against what Arpaio is doing and I think he'd school the old man and Sheridan about the Constitution.

Robert, you're 0 for 2. A conservative U.S. District Court judge as well as a Democratic Attorney General have found that Arpaio and MCSO racially profile Latinos.

It would be amusing to see federal Marshall might be ordered to haul them both off for contempt of court that would be funny to see them in federal jail attire and given some of their own medicine for a change!

Don't expect the 82 year old Flaccid Failure to abide by the court's orders. He's too mentally ill, to understand the rule of laws and the authorities above him. The Judge needs to smack him around some more (disciplinary action). Maybe slap some serious sanctions on the corrupt MCSO. That should wise him up a bit.

Why is "their perception of the race" needed before a stop?

@dentist  50.7% of the votes with a $6 million dollar war chest (for a Sheriff's race??) is not what I would call a trouncing.

Of course there was help for the Sheriff from Hit and Run Horny and Bennett (where's his birth certificate?) who made it tougher for people to register and vote.  Like the thousands of ASU students.

In the meantime, the County continues to spend literally tens of millions of dollars on this one lawsuit, and will continue to do so for the rest of the decade, if not longer.

Then, of course, there are Arpaio's other 5,000 lawsuits.  He's really trying for that One Billion Dollar Level.

What an utter, contemptible waste.

@dkessler4 I think Arizona was part of Spain before Mexico decided to go to war and take it. Most countries of the world had wars so they could expand as a matter of fact there is one being played out over in Russia today, Arizona was purchased not stolen.

Do you like Mussolini of Maricopa any better?  It is more accurate, reflecting the clownish nature of Arpaio's incompetent, bigoted and sadistic tenor in office.

Sheriff Arpaio panders to fear and the worst instincts of people, courts routinely find him violating the United States Constitution, he runs up gargantuan legal costs for the taxpayers of the County to pay, he appeals to voyeuristic sadism, and he does a truly terrible job at law enforcement.

None of this has been a secret. The citizens of Maricopa County have been responsible for this on-going shame for over 20 years.  They have paid, and will continue to pay, for the evil they've loosed on their own citizens and wallets.

You do know that the plaintiffs in this case, except one, was a US citizen, right?  And the one that wasn't a citizen, had a valid visa and was in the country legally.

Or didn't you know that they were all just as "illegal" as you are?

@RobAZ Rob, that was what Sheridan said. Judge Snow clarified his position in his order. He never intended a before and after. All he intended was for documentation of who was in each vehicle that was stopped....

It was $8 million to Penzone's $400 thousand & The Joe Show still only got 50.7%. If we can get a law that allows candidates to get donations only from the locality that they're running in we'll be rid of The Jow Show once & for all.

@john043012 @dkessler4   In 1848, under the terms of the Mexican Cession the United States took possession of Arizona above the Gila River after the Mexican-American War.

John, what kind of American are you?  You don't even know your own history, but just make up fairy tales.

OK, we did buy an extra piece in 1853, after the really big land grab.

@john043012  Keep reading John.  Who knows, you might learn something.

For instance, slavery wasn't legal in Mexico in 1836, but it sure was in the US.  Think about what the motives of Texas slave holders might have been in that year.

Why do you suppose Abraham Lincoln so vehemently opposed the 1846 Mexican-American War?  How do you respond to the slogan, "Throw the Mexicans out; bring the slaves in?"

@bobunf Well I just found out reading the article you suggested and i wasn't aware we gave mexico 15 million for the land I knew money was exchanged for the land what I wasn't aware of our government gave an additional 3.25 million to the Mexicans living on it

Unfortunately this is the typical American at this point. Facts and actual history don't matter, just the 'ra ra ra we're #1 ra ra ra' US can do no wrong arrogance that we came out of WWII with... even though we did not win that war either

@RobAZ @TommyCollins Rob, I have reason to believe it's a part of the selection process. If one is not as unintelligent or as ill informed as the shurf they simply aren't promoted. In many cases applicants can't dumb themselves down enough to become part of the command staff. What is the difference between Hendershott and Sheridan? 200 pounds, maybe? Otherwise they are like twins of another mother....

@RobAZ @TommyCollins

I think this was just sarcastic hype by Sheridan to disparage the court orders. The guy is a mental midget and simply doesn't know what it might like to be a professional. Which is EXACTLY why they are in the position they are in now. The shurf's command staff haven't had the nuts to ever tell him no.
