More than one-in-five Arizonans reported not having enough money to buy food for themselves or for their family on at least one occasion in 2013.

That finding comes from Gallup, which polled more than 178,000 people nationwide last year on a variety of subjects. A little more than 21 percent of Arizona residents reported not being able to afford food at least once, and only nine other states had higher levels.

Mississippi led the poll for the sixth year in a row -- a little more than 25 percent of that state's residents faced food insecurity last year.

This is the first time in the six-year history of this poll that Arizona has had one of the 10 highest levels, according to Gallup.

Federal government data has come up with similar estimates of food insecurity in Arizona. In 2011, when the most recent estimate was released, an estimated 19.1 percent of Arizonans were suffering from food insecurity -- a rate that had already been increasing over the previous two years.

The national average, according to Gallup's survey, isn't profoundly better than Arizona's, at 18.9 percent. That's an increase over 18.2 percent in 2012, and 17.8 percent back in 2008 -- the lowest total over the six years.

"Americans' growing struggles to afford food may be linked to a rise in food prices across the country, particularly meat prices, while national incomes have largely flat-lined since the recession," according to Gallup's report. "Trouble affording food may also be linked to the national rise in unhealthy eating habits in 2013 and the uptick in the obesity rate."

The U$A is the MOST OBESE nation in the WORLD! ... with 33% of the population being clinically obese, along with the concomitant poor health and disease costs to themselves and society.

Missing a few meals here and there won't kill them as fast as their morbid gluttony.

10 of top 10 and 16 out of top 20 are complete total majority republican run states. They speak loudly to the marriage of wealthy big business interests and red state republican politics. If they could cut all help to the poor and starve them to death they wouldn't shed a tear because they never experience real poverty. It's easy be smug when you got all the marbles.

Damn, talk about a feeble attempt at sensationalism in order to advance an agenda.  How does - "... one in five ... not have enough money to buy food on at least one occasion..." equate to ""21 PERCENT ... STRUGGLE TO FIND FOOD"?

I only had a couple of bucks in my pocket and I wanted to stop at a cafe the other day.  Damn, I didn't have enough to buy food at least once.

I would wager that at least 95% of your total is just too damn lazy to work so they are looking for someone else to support them.

i saved 3500 bucks a year on premiums, 4 grand off my deductible and on average about 10-15 bucks on each of my co-pays (which at like 4 a week works out to about another 2 grand or so) over my employer plan when i switched to ACA .... that works out to a crap load of groceries courtesy of obama and ACA. the reason people are starving in this state is because of blatantly insane social and religiously based legislation agendas that scare away companies that provide good paying jobs and the right to work facade, and who likes right to work and crazy social and religioously based legislation? the very same people that have all the political power at the state level az..... you got it: the republicans

Not too many Dems cut deal to make the poor suffer....believe me. Those who cut those deals end up loosing office. War against the poor is PRIMARILY a Republican ideal. It always has been since Reagan. End of story. Suck it up, haters.

Blaming the ACA is asinine....Employers could have covered their employees, but they are too greedy to do so. The proof is in this link I've supplied. Put the blame where it should go, a state run by the GOP. Almost every red state has the largest welfare recipients because wealth distribution is so screwed up.It's not rocket science. http://obamacarefacts.com/health-care-reform-timeline.php

that's me and my boy every month. Barely able to stretch it the last week to two weeks. Just got done at Fry's looking for any meat that is expiring tomorrow, so to ask the butcher to mark it down for me. And all this while the Tea Party Republicans gripe that I make too much money in my $15/mo in food stamps and who think all my son and I should be allowed to eat is bread and water, as they spend tonight partying at their sushi bars, steak houses, and getting drunk, or just tucking their finely fed kids into bed tonight while they discuss with their spouses what a parasite on society I am, and how I am a drug addict, after I worked for 23 yrs until I have my accident that made me disabled. I just hope that I can stretch my last $25 I have left until the 3rd of the month. And as for the Tea Party voters, they can suck a big fat Uncle Sam Dick then blow it out of their ass.

So yes, I did think before I spoke, the Politicians are wanting to blame each other while the people of this country muddle through.

Well excuse me Joe, according to the original law everyone was supposed to be signed up before 2014, but due to the administration their website was not ready, so they keep pushing the sign up date back so the elections can be held..

I bet a lot of those folks the Phoenix New Times makes fun of in their weekly mugshots segment are part of that 21 percent.

Joe Kennedy
Joe Kennedy

Yeah that idea might have been feasible, but the study was done in 2013. That's before the ACA kicked in. It went into full swing in January. So yep thinking before speaking is always a good thing.

Nathan Schneider, you are blaming the Republicans for this? Come on, maybe the reason they can not afford food is because they have to pay for health insurance because their employer could not afford to cover their employees due to Obama!! Think before you speak!!!

How is it that so many trashy people who work the system get $500+ a month in government assistance and those people who actually need it get pennies??? It's terrible.

Republicans don't like social services. Keep that in mind when you're voting this Fall.

3000 club has market on the move every Saturday across the valley. You can get up to 60lbs of fresh vegetables for $10. It is a great alternative for those who are on limited budgets.

I missed plenty of meals, because I had no money. It's not a big deal. However, if anyone is actually starving, hit me up. I'll buy you some food.

You only get $189/mos for one person with $0 income. It's crazy.

Don't forget the large percentage that has trouble finding work because they're here illegally.  They're included in these statistics.

People who like "right to work" also include those of us who provide sufficient value to our employers that we don't need to blackmail them into giving us better pay and working conditions.  If we're unhappy, we go someplace else to work.  Maybe you should have stayed in school.

Damn Caroline, you sound more than just a bit bitter.  I'm glad you found a boogeyman to hate.

Well Traci, the answer, of course, is to generate some income.
