SB 1062 Protesters Demand Apology From Lobbyist Cathi Herrod

In addition to protests at the state Capitol over Arizona's Senate Bill 1062, activists have now taken to the office of the lobbying group that developed and pushed the bill, the Center for Arizona Policy.

Citizens for a Better Arizona led a delegation of people to CAP's Phoenix office today, to demand a formal apology from the organization's president, Cathi Herrod.

"If you follow the puppeteer's strings, they go right to this building, and to one person -- Cathi Herrod," said Beto Soto, of Citizens for a Better Arizona.

Not only do people fear that this is genuinely harmful anti-gay legislation, but it's also brought yet another black eye to the state and people of Arizona, regardless of whether Governor Jan Brewer ultimately decides to veto the bill.

This afternoon, activists put up red tape in front of the office building that read "closed," as Soto declared CAP as "incompatible with Arizona values."

"Arizona right now overwhelmingly supports the LGBT community," Soto said, as he promised another protest at the office tomorrow at 1 p.m.

The activists also typed up an apology letter for Herrod, and planned to ask her to sign the letter, which apologizes for bringing shame to the state.

Security guards didn't let anyone past the front door.

The Center for Arizona Policy, a Christian Right group, has only gotten stronger in Arizona in recent years. The group boasts that 123 of its bills have become laws since 1995. Just last year, nine of its supported bills were signed into law, and three were vetoed -- including this same "religious freedom."

The organization also worked to kill an anti-bullying bill out of a fear that it was designed to protect gay children.

This session, CAP is also pushing bills to strengthen anti-assisted suicide laws, expanded tax exemptions for churches, and the ability for the state to inspect abortion clinics without a warrant.

No, you don't have the right to refuse service to whomever you want. What will you do if Atheists become the majority and refuse to sell groceries, gas, medical care to Christians?

People should be protesting loudly and in large numbers at Cathi Herrod's office every single day until that nasty, ugly, bigoted little troll and her CAP toadies are run out of their building, if not out of the state. They are a disgrace to Arizona, a disgrace to christianity, and a disgrace to the human race in general.

"Not only do people fear that this is genuinely harmful anti-gay legislation, but it's also brought yet another black eye to the state and people of Arizona,..."

The Homosexual permissive southern part of Arizona (Phoenix/Tempe anyone?) gives Arizona the black eye.

Swish on that!

I think she should apologize right before she resigns

lol resignation? shes not in office. Shes just a lobby for ultra right radicals that weaseled her way in by having like minded people elected. We need to remove anyone that does her bidding over the will of us voters though!

There was tremendous push back on this piece of hate legislation. Both civil and commercial objections to SB 1062 from the better angels in Arizona. Please don't believe the state is full of short-sighted, small-hearted idiots. They are, surprisingly, in the minority. It is this minority, however, who control the Conservative elements in our state and local governments. The original people who authored this piece of work were from the Alliance Defense Fund: James Dobson (Focus on the Family), Larry Burkett (Crown Financial Ministries), Bill Bright (Campus Crusade for Christ), and others who work against the American Civil Liberties Union. Brewer is merely a weak political puppet but managed to take a stand against the ADF, which, unfortunately, is headquartered in Scottsdale, AZ.

Brewer is term-limited out. Next year there will be a new governor (and no Super Bowl for the NFL to take away), which means we'll see this bill again. You can bet on it.

She should apologize. But she won't.

No, I don't think she should apologize too anyone , this country was brought up on the Constitution , along with Christian beliefs. and the Holy Bible. Because there are minority groups that want too change our country around too they're way of thinking is totally bull-shit !!!!!!

Any comment resembling an apology from CAP would not be sincere so I'd prefer to see her gone, dismissed and out of the way so we can develop an agenda that is good for ALL Arizonans.

What really needs to happen is that ALL citizens of the state of AZ need to get out and vote in every election. I truly believe we could get rid of the people influenced by the likes of CRAP and Cathi Horrid if we could get people other than the RWNJ factor to consistently vote. Watch this woman closely from now on and do not let her org advocate more garbage like SB 1062, definitely, but also work toward a legislature who will not be beholden to her.

For what? Following the process to change or add a Bill. We MUST get to our legislature, our representatives, and protest every Bill that comes from this organization.

Lisa Griffith Stapleton

She took a stand for her personal beliefs, which I believe she has a right to do, and not be required to apologize for. That this bill was vetoed IS a God-send on its own. It was nothing more than an attempt to allow bigotry to reign under some sort of "religious freedom" clause. Herrod has been given a message from this state--keep your bigotry to yourself and those like you. But apologize? She let us know what she's about. Isn't that better than some sort of phony apology for the sake of saving face? Letting the political bigots in our state show themselves for WHO and WHAT they are is far better and because we're smart here in Arizona and we WILL remember.

Thomas Jefferson specifically stated in the process of drafting  our constitution that this is not a christian county.  It's a secular nation.  All people being allowed to practice their respective religions.   To the extent that christian ideals have influenced our society, that influence has been overall for the worst. Death and destruction in the name of god. Slavery, genocide of American Indians, segregation, denigration of women, minorities, gays (in other words anyone who is not a white male) colonialism, neo colonialism, to name just a few issues, all in the name of god. Gotta love these right wing knuckle dragging Neanderthals, so popular in AZ! Easily electable! Luckily the country is changing for the better and AZ will eventually be brought along....kicking and screaming and crying into their bibles:)

The Constitution is a secular document. It specifically excludes religion from lawmaking. Furthermore, discrimination against anyone, including gays, runs counter to every bit of Christian teaching. Even the Pope refuses to condemn gays. The only minority trying to change the country is that which believes that somehow choosing a life of religious extremism entitles them to impose their narrow views on everyone else – and Jan Brewer stood against it.

Now look ac (may I call you that? I feel relaxed with you). Catagorical summarizations of collective guilt are highly suspect as they appeal to the decency of those they condemn for immoraility.  This is misleading .For example, the very term,"christian', exists because the institutionalized nazarites (a jewish sect believing that God provided a one-time perfect blood sacrifice for all humanity that repented of their sins) needed to be called something differant from the Jews they intended persecuting using their government offices. But not all those who are now called christian are guilty of that crime.

No , not nazarine. That is differant.

acmorton

@Skepticles  It's not hate if it's an historical fact, unlike the justifications used for discriminating against gays (or blacks, or Jews, or women, or anyone who isn't a white male evangelical “Christian”…).

@Skepticles In the post to which I was referring? Oh, only the claim that the country was brought up on “Christian beliefs and the Holy Bible”.
