SB 1062 Protesters Denounce So-Called "Religious Freedom Bill," Video by Dennis Gilman

Thumbnail image for FeatheredBastard_RESIZE_VF.jpg

Check out this awesome new video from Phoenix videographer Dennis Gilman, catching some of the action from a demonstration at the state Capitol, where protesters denounced the Arizona GOP's asinine "religious freedom" bill, aka Senate Bill 1062.

That bill would allow business people to discriminate against the LGBT community, and in reality, just about anyone, as long as they can justify it with religion.

Essentially, SB 1062 is SB 1070 for gays.

Kudos to Dennis Gilman for this great new video on the GOP's pro-bigotry bill

Just like when 1070 was sitting on Governor Jan Brewer's desk in 2010, the talk of boycotts and money leaving the state has already begun.

The difference? Brewer is not up for re-election this year (no matter what anyone, including Brewer, says), and Brewer signed 1070 for one reason four years ago: to ensure her win, both in the GOP primary and in the general election.

This bill is so stupid on so many levels: morally, economically, legally, politically, you name it.

But if Brewer signs this legislation, the Arizona Republican Party ultimately will suffer, big time. Brewer will be giving Dems an issue with which to rally their base and get people to the polls this November.

Moreover, such blatant discrimination will encourage those in the LGBT community nationwide to focus their efforts and their donations on Arizona.

The 2008 Arizona gay-marriage ban was another thing altogether, particularly since Arizona law already prevented same-sex unions.

This bill's language is broad and sets Arizona on a deliberate, backward path, further stigmatizing a state that's regular fodder for comedians and talk show hosts.

Sure, I hope Brewer does the right thing.

But if she doesn't, it's going to be fun watching Republicans deal with this albatross once they get past their primaries, the one place this sort of bigotry plays.

Also, check out those signs in the video, the ones that say, "Goodbye Super Bowl," and "Goodbye Google."

Chew on that possibility, Republicans.

Then tell your governor to sign away....

Drama queen governor. Attention to Arizona for ALL the wrong reasons. Every second she doesn't veto the bill, the more harm done to Arizona. On the path to self-destructing Arizona.

Then again, the rock was lifted up to shine the harsh light on those scurrying out from under it. Thanks to the courageous protestors -- the real people of Arizona.

Why can't we be a state known for its awesome mental health care, or excellent school programs. Why does this state devote so much energy, resources to such a wasteful effort which serves no one, especially our under employed state!

Religion and Hatred have no place in Politics. It's time to vote out these extremists that are running this state to the ground.

Huffingtonpost reports that Jan is "ambivalent" about signing the bill. If she vetoes it, who's gonna bellow like a wounded buffalo? Repubs in the legislature went to a lot of trouble to mark up the bill and pass it. Someone is bound to be very unhappy if it's vetoed. Did everyone see the stupid cow who spoke in favor of the bill on Fox 10?

I seriously wonder if the fruit loops from Westboro Baptist Church was behind this bullshit... trust me I'm being mild when I use the term fruit loops.

I can already see how much damage this bill will do if it becomes law.

GED Jan better veto this bill. Then shred it.

If this bill passes, what all business owners need to do is refuse service to any elected official in Arizona that voted for it for religious beliefs.

I'm sure there's something in every religion that stops them from serving the dumbass politicians that run this backward State.

“Dear Arizona,

Congratulations. You are now the first state actually to pass a bill permitting businesses–even those open to the public–to refuse to provide service to LGBT people based on an individual’s “sincerely held religious belief.” This “turn away the gay” bill enshrines discrimination into the law. Your taxi drivers can refuse to carry us. Your hotels can refuse to house us. And your restaurants can refuse to serve us.

Kansas tried to pass a similar law, but had the good sense to not let it come up for a vote. The quashing came only after the Kansas Chamber of Commerce and other traditional conservative groups came out strongly against the bill.

But not you, Arizona. You’re willing to ostracize and marginalize LGBT people to score political points with the extreme right of the Republican Party. You say this bill protects “religious freedom,” but no one is fooled. When I was younger, people used “God’s Will” as a reason to keep the races separate, too. Make no mistake, this is the new segregation, yours is a Jim Crow law, and you are about to make yourself ground zero.

This bill also saddens me deeply. Brad and I have strong ties to Arizona. Brad was born in Phoenix, and we vacation in Show Low. We have close friends and relatives in the state and spend weeks there annually. We even attended the Fourth of July Parade in Show Low in 2012, looking like a pair of Arizona ranchers.

The law is breathtaking in its scope. It gives bigotry against us gays and lesbians a powerful and unprecedented weapon. But your mean-spirited representatives and senators know this. They also know that it is going to be struck down eventually by the courts. But they passed it anyway, just to make their hateful opinion of us crystal clear.

So let me make mine just as clear. If your Governor Jan Brewer signs this repugnant bill into law, make no mistake. We will not come. We will not spend. And we will urge everyone we know–from large corporations to small families on vacation–to boycott. Because you don’t deserve our dollars. Not one red cent.

And maybe you just never learn. In 1989, you voted down recognition of the Martin Luther King holiday, and as a result, conventions and tourists boycotted the state, and the NFL moved the Superbowl to Pasadena. That was a $500 million mistake.

So if our appeals to equality, fairness, and our basic right to live in a civil society without doors being slammed in our face for being who we are don’t move you, I’ll bet a big hit to your pocketbook and state coffers will."

@DonkeyHotay  Don't gay people pay taxes here? Are gay soldiers that fought in a phony war going to be punished? And for god's sake there must be a few politicians with a soul somewhere in this state. Who in the holy hell would come up with crap like this.

@DonkeyHotay @Electrica  Double punished if they visit Phoenix. All soldiers from the USA had to fight a phony war. A war made on false pretenses. All soldiers are being punished by Republicans who started this false war because they are cutting the funds to all soldiers. Some gay soldiers(so I've heard), have been stripped of their medals because they discovered they were gay. Now Phoenix lawmakers want to hate all gay people. HATE. HATE. HATE. START A NEW WAR FOR MONEY. THEN HATE. HATE. HATE.

@fishingblues @Electrica @wrp136  I've met some true Christians. They are extraordinary individuals. And not  a one of the real bona-fide Christians that I've ever met embraced hatred. Not a one. I think we can all agree that there are these pseudo Christians. It's very evident that powerful people slip into personas where they have the best power to manipulate the masses and pray on their fears. Real Christians don't hate-- they help. Now here come the Republican politicians who voted on this wretched bill screaming up to Brewer to veto this. Well boys...you just handed Brewer your balls on a plate. Squeeze Jan...squeeze hard.
