KTAR Finds a Business That Actually Supports SB 1062

People protesting SB 1062 Monday at the state Capitol.

Based on an analysis of headlines from local news outlets, it would appear that everyone and their grandmother opposes Arizona's Senate Bill 1062.

By Monday afternoon, the Arizona Capitol Times counted 84 businesses and business groups in public opposition to the "religious freedom" bill, including Marriott, Apple, and American Airlines.

That had us wondering -- is there any Arizona business that actually supports the bill, which has been slammed for being anti-gay?

Turns out, we found one single report of a business in favor of the bill.

Here's what local news radio station KTAR is reporting:
"I'm not a lawyer, there's a lot of legalese that I don't understand, but the parts I do, I agree with quite frankly," said Doug Henderson, owner of Henderson Family Farm in Casa Grande. "There are certain lifestyles that are wrong. it doesn't mean I hate the person, I just don't agree with their lifestyle."
According to the Henderson Family Farm website -- which is entirely in Comic San -- the farm is on just two acres.

Meanwhile, the Phoenix Business Journal was on social media, specifically looking for companies that support SB 1062.

The result: They found a couple of real estate agents who support it, one of whom used to own a business.

If you own a business and you support SB 1062, feel free to let us know, and we'll pass it along to the public for you.

You're all idiots. He is speaking his beliefs and should not be persecuted for doing so. Stop complaining about the fact that not everyone agrees with you and being butt-hurt. No one cares. Wash the sand out of your vaginas and grow up. Be professional.

I wonder if this guy understands he owns a franchise for a nation wide company (it was easy to find out what his business is), and I wonder how that company feels about his stance?  Don't they have the right to close him down for their beliefs?  I'd bet they are not happy with someone using their name supporting bigotry in business...

I agree with the bill and I don't hate gay people at all.

She has to veto this...despite, most likely, her tacit support of it. Unconscionable.

The owner seems to believe that homosexuality is a "lifestyle choice".

You can't punish a person into understanding your point of view.

You just change their ignorance to hatred, and that's not very productive.

I hope there will be a list of every business that supports 1062 so consumers can make the choice to shop there or not. Cause I know I definitely do not want to shop at these places.

I am a regular at the roadrunner market and the Henderson's have always been my first stop being they are the only certified organic vendor. It's sad to see Doug make this statement, don't know what I'll do on Saturday.

Not too many will admit they support 1062. Like their cockroach brethren, they fear the light.

MISSING PERSON!!!' --- HELP FIND CATHI! --- Cathi Herrod, author of SB 1062 is missing. You won't see her on the news this week, because she's in hiding. She and the Center for Arizona Policy (www.azpolicy.org) helped "define marriage" in Arizona, and also opposed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). Please repost and share so we can find Cathi Herrod and get her statement on her famous "religious freedom" bill. #cathiherrod #SB1062 #bad4azbiz #stopcap

ALSO Heres one more tidbit of information for Mr Doug Henderson of CASA GRANDE.

For nearly 100 years in Arizona (1865-1962) #interracialmarriage was Illegal. More specifically.... Filipinos ("Malays") and Indians ("Hindus") were added to a list of "races" in 1931. As interpreted by the Supreme Court of Arizona in State v. Pass, 59 Ariz. 16, 121 P.2d 882 (1942), the law prohibited persons of mixed racial heritage from marrying anyone.

But I can see how that is unimportant to you now!  Just Sayin!

@ISWHATITIS  You may not hate gay people, but you put yourself and people of faith above them if you support this bill, which is the basis of discrimination and bigotry.

@ISWHATITIS

You believe that if a person's religion tells them that blacks are inferior in the eyes of god, that it's ok to refuse to hire them?

If you don't believe that, then you don't really agree with the bill.  Like many of our legislators, you simply don't understand it.

@valleynative  TBH no one is really trying to change their point of view.

I don't agree with speed limits laws, that's my point of view, but I do abide by them because I am a member of a society that has them.

Same thing here. This family is welcome to their views but they are a willing part of this society and as such need to abide by the rules of society, one of which says discrimination is illegal.

Their ignorance has two ways to go - get educated and learn and grow or don't - that's up to them but no matter what they choose, they still have to abide by the rules of society.

Usually the ones that learn and grow do not turn hateful. Hateful is the response of the ignorant who are unwilling or incapable of growth.

They of course are welcome to try to change these rules, they are after all a part of society and should have a voice in it, but until they are changed, gotta live by them.

@saddayforaz  I'll tell you what they would say: They would accept the fact for what it is, whether they support it or not. They would voice their opinions of it, nothing more. Because, unlike most people on this site, they have religious tolerance and freely exercise their right to free speech and religion. They are not persecuting anyone, they will gladly serve those who shop with them provided they are not forced to say they support and believe in something they truly do not. And in case you want to respond, this is their son. I am straight. I am an active duty soldier in the U.S. Army, I have gay friends, I also have lesbian friends. Those who I work with everyday, not once flinching at the fact that they practice something different. So you wanna have a go at me? Shoot.

@Flyer9753 I'm not religious at all but I believe in 100% religious freedom, and that includes business owners right to their religious expression and prevent those they view as undesirable from affecting their business. It is important to always know who your enemies are in life.

@valleynative I believe a business should have the right to refuse service to whomever they choose.

@Flyer9753 @valleynativeIt is actually LEGAL right now for a private business to discriminate against gays - you're not a very bright bulb now are you.

@LowlyGrunt @saddayforaz  Hey asshole, Religious tolerance is not an excuse for being a bigot and disrespecting others.

Nor is it a get out of jail free card for breaking the law and violating others rights.

Grow the fuck up and if you are in the Army as you say, start acting like it and start protecting EVERYONES rights and the tenants this country was founded on.

Oh, you are their son? Good, tell your parents to grow the fuck up too.

Flyer9753

@ISWHATITIS @Flyer9753  You know who the enemies are?

Those that put themselves and their religion above everyone else.

If you support this type of bill, you are a religious zealot and not an american, since the constitution and EQUAL, not special for some parts of society, rights are first and foremost

ExpertShot
ExpertShot topcommenter

@valleynative @ISWHATITIS The WORST thing this bill does, and no one is talking about, is that it give corporations the right to exercise their "religious beliefs".  How in the hell can a corporation, a state formed entity that exists on paper, exercise a religious belief?

valleynative
valleynative topcommenter

@ISWHATITIS @valleynative

Again, if you believe this bill is only about "refusing service", you've misunderstood it.  This bill would allow businesses to engage in many reprehensible practices.

It essentially says that they shouldn't be "burdened" by the law if the law contradicts their "sincerely held religious belief", no matter how silly that belief may be.

Hotch75
Hotch75

@ISWHATITIS @valleynative  Then you have a misunderstanding of the bill as it has been amended. This bill specifically gives someone the right to refuse service because of their sincere religious belief.

Currently it is ok to refuse service to anyone. This amendment adds in protections for religious business owners from law suits. Thus protecting a part of the whole unfairly.
