Joe Arpaio's 78th and 79th Workplace Raids: Three Arrests

A Red Robin restaurant is short one employee, and a country-Western bar is short two, after Sheriff Joe Arpaio's 78th and 79th workplace raids.

The so-called "criminal employment" operations that result in the arrests of undocumented immigrants don't seem to be as fruitful for the Sheriff's Office as they once were -- a grand total of six arrests have been made over the past four operations by the MCSO's Criminal Employment Unit.

Although Arpaio was on the losing end of the Melendres v. Arpaio civil rights case, the workplace raids were not at issue on that lawsuit. That lawsuit concerned a pattern of targeting Latinos in traffic stops.

As a result of another federal case, the MCSO also has been banned from arresting people on charges of smuggling themselves into the country -- another tactic Arpaio's office has utilized to use the Sheriff's Office as an immigration-enforcement agency. Again, the workplace busts weren't at issue.

So the MCSO's workplace raids continue. Hundreds of people -- mostly, if not all, Latino immigrants -- have been arrested for working with false or allegedly stolen identification, yet those who did the hiring have been arrested in only one case thus far.

In the first of these two new workplace busts, the former Red Robin worker, a 21-year-old man who worked at the location outside Chandler Fashion Center, was found out after allegedly using another person's identity. The man was told by the IRS that he had unpaid taxes on his earnings, according to the Sheriff's Office.

In a separate investigation, deputies arrested two workers at a Mesa country-Western bar, Thunder Pass. One employee's accused of using some else's Social Security Number, while the other's just accused of using a false identification.

Two of the three people arrested in these operations were booked into jail on identity theft and forgery charges, while the other was booked on a charge of criminal impersonation, which is still a felony.

In the two operations before this, carried out last month, two employees of Arizona Shower Door were arrested, as was one workers at a Chili's restaurant in Mesa.

Get over it bitch!  Stop your fucking crying!  You don't seem to care about all the millions of American citizens who had their debit cards stolen in the Target data breach or other things.  You don't seem to care about the thousands of American citizen men and women in jails across the country who have been separated from their families. Why?

Any by the way do you know that the issue about immigration reform is pretty much dead now??  Yes it is and who can you thank you that?  We're not done yet!

robert_graham

Oh so you think these raids were wrong???  You think that it was okay that those poor people's Social Security was denied to them because their identity had been stolen by illegal aliens? If you do you are sick in the head.  You are anarchits!  How would YOU like it if your identity gets stolen and you suffer as a result?

You keep crying that those illegal aliens were only trying to feed their families but what about the victim's families?  How many more people are victims of this kind of Identity Theft and don't even know it yet???  Maybe you are and if so should we feel sorry for you???

See my response about this raid at http://sheriffarpaio.org/?page_id=676

How about the 400 plus sex crimes that were swept under the rug. Sorry, that would require law enforcement.

So when is Joe going to go after the  REAL cause of illegal immigration?  You know the Criminal Businessmen who hire them?

Oops sorry I forgot, they are  campaign contributors

I gotta say, and I hope fellow posters don't think of my remarks as heresy, but I do believe that illegal immigrants who use someone else's SSN deserve to be tried, convicted, serve time, pay restitution and after that be deported.

@robert_graham  tell ya what bobbi bitch...we'll get over it, when MCSO's clearance rate is above 30% and he proves he can do HIS REAL JOB! IE enforcing ALL laws! (you all like to use the line, its about time you actually meant it!)

@robert_graham  no one cares about your shitty site. I noticed you pimp that lame POS on every site you can.

furthermore, you act as if you truly give a shit about the law..but your actions dictate otherwise. 432 sex crimes against kids, not one arrest..and you condoned and even defended it! 27k + outstanding warrants of people who allegedly committed crimes, and MCSO ignores them only for you to condone it! Lastly, the violation of civil rights of AMERICAN citizens. this is the icing on the cake because it clearly shows the rights hypocrisies on several levels. Lets forget about the fact that most arpaio apologists rant against Obama like hes hitler, YOUR HERO FUCKING CHARGED JUDGES WITH CRIMES BECAUSE THEY SIMPLY RULED AGAINST HIM! It doesnt get much more "dictator" than that! But the right is always talking about Obama violating peoples rights, and throwing them in jail over dissent!! Here we have the right wing hero sheriff doing it not just to judges, but having no oversight over his own employees who did it on more than a dozen occasions! To sum up my point, youre full of shit, and so are the rest of the arpaio apologists!!!!

@azlefty

How do you prove that the employer knew that their documents were fake?

If you can't do that, you can't prosecute the employers.

@TommyCollins I always wonder at the amount of resources Sheriff Arpaio wastes on these petty "operations".  How many millions in manpower and such?

@ Ericnelson745

Should we give them back all of the Social Security Dollars that they earned for others, and maybe give them back the Vehicles, and even Homes that Arpaio, and Police have stolen from them so they have not been robbed of thier lives earnings?

Arpaio and the M.C.S.O. have used the funds from this Thievery for things such as large ammusement park parties, ect.

Should we al;so deport Sick Child Molesters like Chris Simcox Minute Man Leadear/Pediphile?!

Hell lets deport any one that isn't white, and clean as snow!

@eric.nelson745,

Substitute "Anybody" for "illegal immigrants" and I'm with you.

But there is another aspect to identity theft that nobody seems to complain about.

Why is it that nothing is ever said about the fact that, after being victimized by the identity thief, you are re-victimized by the credit reporting agencies, the credit card companies and the banks when you try to restore your standing?

Where's all the political outrage about this?

@robert_graham ... White American Criminal Scum steal far more identities than any "wetbacks".

robert_graham
robert_graham

@valleynative @azlefty Employers probably did not now because since those employees were using valid social security numbers e-verify would have checked out. But if those wetbacks were using names such as John Smith or Ron Jones then how would the employers not know!

azlefty
azlefty

@valleynative @azlefty  Well when you have them rehiring those deported, not using E-Verify and/or former employees willing to testify to it, it is not that hard,  Joe is not even plucking that low hanging fruit.

As for a system that makes hiring personnel educated on fake IDs, the simple solution is to require they take a course on how to spot fake Id's as a condition of obtaining a business license (I know "socialism") as well as E-verify; it can't be that hard they I have seen some pretty dense folks working the  doors at clubs successfully doing this, so why not Business Owners?  Another option is for the  State to do a "instacheck" like they used to do for firearm purchases or set up a scanner system where the employer has to scan the  ID to verify- I would rather my taxes go for that rather than Joes publicity raids. Any of these can be done in 5 minutes and even be done while you have the  employee fill out their W2s.

I have managed and owned businesses as well as do business consulting and I can speak from experience that 90% of fake IDs are obvious even to the  untrained and if you need to you can take 15 minutes and find a brief tutorial on the  internet. Again we have bouncers at Bars do this why not those who hire?

Sorry but on this issue I do not buy the  "burdensome" argument since it is a lot more burdensome for you and me to pay for the  societal costs of illegal immigration rather  than having some clown take a couple of minutes to insure he is doing his duty to our Nation and insuring he is hiring legal employees.

Remember these types of Solutions have already been ruled Constitutional, so we will not piss money away on lawsuits either.

@valleynative i agree with you....to a point.  prosecution and the making of the case are Montgomery's responsibility, not Joe's. (i know you dont support Joe, i am just voicing where i think there is a breakdown in the situation). if there are illegals there, there is reasonable suspicion as to the employer knowing he had hired illegals (how can youy have someone work for you for a period of time and know nothing about them?) just on the reasonable doubt angle by itself, many other people have been arrested on less, so what Joe SHOULD be doing, is giving those cases to Montgomery instead of making a field decision that it is a hard case to make....................am i right? lets see if Montgomery can earn his pay, right?

azlefty
azlefty

@valleynative @azlefty  It is called an investigation, just like they supposedly do to arrest dishwashers; or like the  Feds did with -friend of Joe's- Danny's car washes. Joe won't touch the money men!  For example do you remember about 5 years ago when Joe raided the  Sizzler after a former store supervisor  came to him and said the people running the  place were knowingly hiring illegals?  It was illegal dishwashers 14 criminal businessmen 0.  In AZ there are E-Verify laws as well as poorly written employer sanctions laws, if Joe would take a moment to enforce these it would be a heck of a start- but again Campaign contributions are major a factor.

Also AZ needs to fix it's employer sanctions law that does nothing  but provide a shield to most of the  criminals who willfully hire the  illegal, Thank the  US Chamber of Commerce and Russell Pierce for that.

I want to see Illegal immigration stopped- well reduced to the  lowest level possible without ca-caing on the  Constitution,- and when 80-85% of illegals are only crossing for employment;  then taking away  the  reason to cross is one hell of a first step; all of the  current "brown fear" blather not only is cost prohibitive but if enacted will be ruled unconstitutional.  Fiscal conservatism is more than talking about "takers" and slashing budgets of programs you do not like it involves actual thought to spending and the  effects spending has.

valleynative
valleynative topcommenter

@phxjustice @TommyCollins

These were both cases where the violators were reported to them, so there was no expensive investigation.  They probably just sent a single car to go arrest the people.

john043012

@shadeaux14 That's the point I have been trying to convey here for months. Hedley, Lemmons write illegal immigrant sob stories that always portrays the illegal as the victim their stories are always one sided .They like to explain away the real injustice done to people of I.D. theft as it being a non issue if it involves an illegal immigrant who is only trying to have a better life. Its screw the citizen we have an agenda at new times and as long as we have low common denominator readers who buy into our line of bullshit lets keep going full steam ahead

robert_graham
robert_graham

@valleynative @azlefty Excuse me but what more evidence do you need than what they knew... that those people were being denied Social Security because somebody else was using their info that pointed right back to Red Robin and AZ Shower door???

azlefty
azlefty

@valleynative @azlefty  No, but in conjunction with a investigation into hiring practices it can be.  Just like any other crime you can always find other evidence besides a witness if the  investigator is willing to look for it

valleynative
valleynative topcommenter

@azlefty

A supervisor saying that they're knowingly hiring illegals isn't likely to be enough to get a conviction.  It's rarely easy to prove that somebody knew that something was false, which means that it's rarely cost-effective to try very hard.

Better laws would probably help, but as it stands, I can understand why law enforcement agencies aren't targeting employers.

john043012
john043012 topcommenter

@david_saint01 If what you say is true and Arpaio is stealing money then why has he not been brought up on charges. One would think with such (ahem) powerful influence's like new times and the Arizona republic this criminality would have made its way to the courts by now .yah think. Oh and by the way I do not understand your comment on nice sidestep to Simcox???

john043012
john043012 topcommenter

@DNichols Are you drunk? Andrew Thomas has been gone for over 2 years. Everyone in our state who is driving with out credentials has their car impounded , everyone , unless there is someone else in the vehicle who has a license. All though it is possible if the driver is transporting drugs or illegal immigrants then yes most likely the vehicle will be confiscated and sold at auction. As far as the homes the only time I can see a home being taken away from an illegal is if he is captured for committing a crime or its being used as a drop house either way most likely the mortgage company would get back the house not Arpaio.

DNichols
DNichols

@John

Thats right besides the vehicles Arpaio stole after pulling Immigrants over for tail lights, ect. Arpaio had his Puppet Andrew Thomas pervert the "Law" claiming that every Immigrant was a Kidnapper, because they kiddnapped themselves, therefor Arpaio deserved thier Homes.

david_saint01
david_saint01 topcommenter

@john043012  lol nice side step to the Chris Simcox statement. I dont know about stealing homes, but hes been stealing money from the county for years and using it to buy homes and commercial properties. IE jail commissary, and pink underwear profits.

david_saint01
david_saint01 topcommenter

@john043012 @shadeaux14  well John, the point WE have been trying to make is, there are far more dangerous criminals MCSO should be going after. Their clearance rate is below 30%, and has been for most of Arpaio's tenure. He could start by actually investigating those ignored sex crimes. You remember those right? the ones he claimed during the 2012 election he was having his dept work on, only for their internal report in Jan of last year to show that they in fact havent touched a single one of those cases since Nov of 2011! Dare i say, a child molester is far more dangerous than a cook stealing someones ID.
