More Arizonans Calling Themselves Moderates, Fewer Calling Themselves Conservatives

Categories: Poll of the Day

The percentage of Arizonans who call themselves "conservative" is down, and the percentage who call themselves "moderates" is up, according to Gallup's annual poll on the subject.

Gallup's done this poll for years now, and this is the first time in at least five years that moderates outnumbered the conservatives.

That follows the trend of the state's voter-registration statistics, in which there are nearly more independents than Republicans (1.12 million to 1.13 million).

According to Gallup's poll, 36 percent of Arizonans called themselves conservative, 38 percent called themselves moderate, and 22 percent called themselves liberal.

Although that seems like a huge gap between the right and the left, it's really not. Gallup explains that moderates "as a voting bloc, are solidly Democratic." At least, that's how they've been voting recently.

Compared to the rest of the states, Arizona's proportion of self-proclaimed conservatives is 30th -- which might seem low, considering everyone in the executive branch of state government is a Republican, as is a majority of lawmakers in both houses of the Legislature. Both U.S. senators are Republicans, but Arizona's Democrats have a one-man advantage in the state's delegation to the House of Representatives.

In polling done in 2010, not long after SB 1070 was signed into law, 39 percent of Arizonans were calling themselves conservative, compared to less than 37 percent saying they were moderate.

By the end of 2011, nearly 41 percent were calling themselves conservatives, compared to just 36 percent moderate.

And in 2012, some people honestly believed Barack Obama had a shot at winning Arizona, and there was a possibility a Dem could win an open U.S. Senate seat. They were wrong, but not quite lunatics.

What this poll doesn't cover are the actual issues.  Voters strongly support sensible gun regulations, birth control, LBGT rights, women's rights to equal pay, voter's rights protections, single payer healthcare for all, getting out of wars and not getting into anymore.

They also support affordable education for all, immigration reform with a path to citizenship and making corporations and the rich pay their fair share in taxes. They are against the privatization of social security and medicare.  They oppose private prisions for profit as well as cutting unemployement and foodstamps while continueing corporate welfare programs for the rich.

All these items are what republicans, conservatives (and republicans we like to call moderates) are mostly against.

The actual will of the American people is the same as a liberal agenda.,,as long as you don't call it that.

Jeannette said it well. What one says and how one votes seems to be two separate things.

We seem to electing nutjobs to the state legislature (to say nothing of re-electing Joe Arpaio). Nothing moderate in any of that.

3rd parties come and go, once it was the Ralph Nader leftists, then the Ross Perot right, today its the lunatics from the tea party terrorist jihad movement, hostage takers of poor, women, children, elderly, disabled citizens, disabled vets, working class working men and women, sorry this will pass and in a few years we will be speaking of the tea party as we do the Nader/Perot Looney tunes as jokes!:-)

Republicans are in civil war with themselves, they love to hate, love money above all else and for the self professed biblical crowd guess they missed Jesus's memo on the rich! For a rich man to enter heaven will be as hard for a Camel to go through the eye of a needle!:-) We democrats only have to let the GOP elite fight and suffer their creation their very own Frankenstein the tea party which like the old corny horror classic the creator is in a war with its creation!

Republicans nationally register 22% of the electorate, Arizona around 34% plus, Democrats 31% plus, remainder Independents and no one owns the independents if they were republicans they would register as such!;-)

The current version of rebublicanism is dying. Has been for a decade or so. AZ will be a blue state in a couple years if the republicans don't drastically change their platform, and abandon xenophobic and hateful policies.

Oh really?   Move along folks, there is nothing to see here.  The majority of the voters in Arizona will always vote for us Republicans.  Just a fact of political life.  Just wait until Republicans take back OUR America in 2014 n 2016...and you WILL have all the proof you need!

The Gallup analysis is actually hopeful for conservatives.

It points out that Democrats are identifying much more strongly as "liberal", making the Democratic party actually less attractive to the moderates, who may swing toward moderate Republican candidates.

Fact:

The Arizona G.O.P. President is recalled Racist Russell Pearce who has Strong Ties to Hate Groups.

The Maricopa County G.O.P. Sheriff is a convicted Racist with Strong ties to Hate Groups.

The Hate groups both have Strong Ties to have included Child Murdering Neo, Nazi's, Vigillantee's that hunt Mexicans with assault rifles, and night scopes, and of course Racist Tea Party Minute Man Child Molester Chris Simcox.

Fact: To Vote G.O.P. for Arpaio, or any association of Arpaio, or Russell Pearce makes you a right wing EXTREMIST, no matter what you try to call yourself!

Be proud of your Arizona G.O.P. Party of Bigotry.

We'll see when elections roll around. At this point, there's nothing coming out of the Capitol to convince me that moderate sanity has entered the Arizona political arena.

Independents have and always are independents if they truly felt they were republican or democrat they would register as such! I think the GOP thinks they own them, the democrats try to woe them, both in reality have to woe them, only the republicans think they own them that is why they are losing so consistently nationally! And that is why we have a democrat governor/attorney general from time to time in a state the GOP thinks is solidly in their column! Again they think they own Arizona and simply only sometimes!

The people might be becoming moderate, but the lawmakers are still largely a bunch of stupid, uneducated conservative yokels.

I will believe that when the fools who have been elected & reelected are defeated. One look at the nonsense bills being offered by the legislature indicates the citizens 'may' be getting more moderate, but their reps are not.

Wow your so funny!:-) What would we do without your insanity to amuse us, your fantasies are the most hilarious!;-) Your going to whine, cry all the way to Jan. 20, 2017 when Obama leaves office like all other presidents do when his term ends!:-)

@DNichols How dare you accuse others of being tied to hate groups when you are tied to one of the biggest one there is -- the Democrats!

Unlike you, I understand statistical analysis and polling techniques.

Polls are useful, when conducted correctly.

I don't recall any polls that said that Romney was winning by a landslide.

Cite one of those polls that said that Romney was going to win by a landslide.  Any one of them.  Thanks.

You don't know much about math, and that's very clear.  The fact that you don't understand statistics doesn't mean that polls don't work anymore than the fact that you don't know how your microwave oven works means that it won't heat your burrito.

A mathematical genius? But one who obviously does not read much, polls were saying Romney was going to win by a land slide, of course polls have folks who do them, they make their living doing them, they get paid to do them so whom ever pays them has a dog in the fight on how their perceived, hence anytime a out come can possibly influence voter turn out they are not saints, hired guns to the highest bidder! Polls can be looked at in hind sight some come out true, some not, in any two possibility outcome one can do as well with a coin toss head or tails, polls are like my horoscope another paid occupation, fun to read but I do not live my life by them or consider them anything but magicians playing at prophesy! A poll taken of 5,000, 10,000 or even 100,000 folks in a nation of 330 million plus and claiming to know what all them 330 million plus think is a joke!:-) Statistics are fine with things unrelated to human beings emotions, thinking, your amusing in your feeble attempt at being some intellectual genius! I got a meager high school diploma and your fancy alleged degrees are like a dog which will not hunt no more!;-)
