How Arizona Looks to the Rest of the Nation, Thanks to SB 1062

If Arizona's anti-immigrant law wasn't enough to tarnish the state's reputation, the state's "religious freedom" bill already is causing plenty of damage.

Despite a huge outpouring of opposition toward the bill from Arizona residents, business groups, and even Republican lawmakers not in the state Legislature, the state's once again being painted as the land of hatred, thanks to Senate Bill 1062.

The bill would expand the rights of businesses to make exercise-of-religion claims in court. Senate Bill 1062 sponsor Republican Steve Yarbrough specifically has likened his legislation to the case in New Mexico, in which a wedding photographer refused to photograph a lesbian couple's wedding. Yarbrough's bill would give the photographer a defense of exercising a "sincerely held religious belief," if that were an Arizona case.

The bill is seen as an anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender bill because LGBT people are not recognized as a "protected class" of people under Arizona law.

Governor Jan Brewer still has the rest of the week to decide whether to veto the legislation, but the fact that the Republican-controlled Legislature was able to pass the bill has already sparked enough outrage.

Several Democrats who fought against the bill said that SB 1062 was going to rank right up there with SB 1070 and former Governor Evan Mecham's fight against Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Arizona in the late '80s. ("You folks don't need another holiday," Mecham was quoted as saying. "What you folks need are jobs.")

Based on the national news media's response to the bill so far, it looks like those Dems might be right. Below, find a few examples of how Arizona's being portrayed to the rest of the country, thanks to SB 1062:

As was the case with SB 1070, all the protests and opposition to the bill won't be what's remembered if Governor Jan Brewer signs SB 1062 into law -- it'll just be another reason to look down on Arizona.

Liberals are such frauds and hypocrites.  Why are all you whiners limiting your angst to the "discrimination of LGBT people?  The law would effectively allow choice or 'discrimination', if you must, to EVERYONE that is not on the protected list - not just LGBT.

Personally, I think the government should get the hell out of our lives and quit making stupid freaking laws.  You dumb-ass liberals are the ones that keep voting for "big government" politicians (see Obama) who love to take your rights away.  I suspect that when the government controls everything you do, you will attempt to blame someone else for your woes.  I have never met a liberal that took personal responsibility for anything.  It is always someone else's fault.

People, the group behind SB 1062 is the Center for Arizona Policy. It is time to focus your energies and expose this hateful organization. They need to be shut down......they have no place in our peaceful society. They ride on the coat tails of "Tax Free" religious groups and are hate mongers. Keep an eye on them....That is where you will find the source of the negativity in Arizona. Change is made with love, not hate. Be that person, even if you're standing alone at first.

Arpaio to Brewer, "Jan you're in a fix, I'll send over some puppies, let the press know you rescued them this morning. Everything will blow over by this afternoon.

Governor Brewer is a horrible human being.  During her tenure she has:

Turned a deaf ear to Arizona Guard personnel, when they brought valid complaints to her.

Did not give a crap about the children of Arizona.  Over 6500 had to be reopened.

Did nothing about Tom Horne's conduct.  At the very least, she could have called for his resignation.

Did not call for Sheriff Babeu's resignation when photos of him surfaced on the internet solicting to "suck dick".  At the time, Babeu was asking for "lovin" on the internet, he was a Major in Governor Brewer's National Guard.  Brewer was his Commander in Chief.

Where was the Arizona Center for Policy with regards to these issues?

Its a shame that the Godfathers of Salt Lake LDS had to ask Romney to intervene on their behalf.

Governor Brewer you are a piece of shit.

Martin Niemöller (1892-1984) was a prominent Protestant pastor who emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps.

Niemöller is perhaps best remembered for the quotation:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

2014 GOP Gubenatorial candidate, and AZ State Senator Al Melvin (Republican LD11) stated on his CCN interview with Anderson Cooper, "...I'm against all discrimination and I want maximum relgious freedom sir." Sen. Melvin has taken a couragous stand against discrimination in AZ. Email Sen. Melvin and ask him to sponsor a bill adding "sexual orientation" to the protected class under Arizona State law. He really hates discrimination, and I'm sure he would love to hear from you.

MISSING PERSON!!!' --- HELP FIND CATHI! --- Cathi Herrod, author of SB 1062 is missing. You won't see her on the news this week, because she's in hiding. She and the Center for Arizona Policy (www.azpolicy.org) helped "define marriage" in Arizona, and also opposed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). Please repost and share so we can find Cathi Herrod and get her statement on her famous "religious freedom" bill. #cathiherrod #SB1062 #bad4azbiz #stopcap

Do you not understand that you can respond on the initial post or are you just that passive aggressive?? Did you read what this bill is about? It speaks for itself. It's the farthest thing from tolerance. You seem to be drinking enough kool-aid for everyone. Enough for the entire state of Arizona. Studies have shown that educated people are more tolerant than others. Just the facts.

seems like Arizona is the only true American State left..pretty embarrassing to see a Woman do a way better job than most of our Presidents, especially the current one who hates any American that's White who makes a dime into a dollar.

Get over it. The law says that businesses have the right to refuse service to anybody. If you are denied being able to shop at "Store A" then go to "Store B".

Why is it every thing the Tea Party does is try and take rights away, voting rights, reproductive rights, rights to decent health care, the right to have your own relationships. They want to build a wall around themselves so no one different from their fantasy 1923 world are let in.
