ASU Fraternity Celebrates MLK Day with Party Mocking Black People

Photos posted to social-media websites show white Arizona State University students dressed up in basketball jerseys and bandannas, throwing up gang signs, and drinking out of a watermelon cup as part of an "MLK party."

"Just a day after the nation celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., racism has reared its head at one of the America's largest universities," says the Reverend Jarrett Maupin, a local black activist.

Maupin, who saw photos of the party early this morning, says the "MLK Black Party" was organized by members of ASU's Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.

You can see some of the students' posts to Instagram below:

Maupin fired off an e-mail to ASU president Michael Crow, calling for any student involved in the party to be expelled.

"There should be a zero tolerance policy for racism at ASU. Period," Maupin says.

ASU spokeswoman Sharon Keeler tells New Times that the frat already was on "social probation," which means it's not supposed to have parties. She notes that the party wasn't held on campus, nor was it sanctioned by ASU.

"ASU has suspended chapter operations, can and will take additional action against the individuals involved, and is meeting with the national TKE organization today to take further action," Keeler says. "ASU has one of the most diverse student bodies of any major university in the country, and it is unfortunate that a few misguided individuals held an offensive party at a time when ASU, the state and the nation are celebrating Dr. King's achievements and legacy. The university will not tolerate this kind of behavior."

Police said in late 2012 that members of the TKE fraternity were involved in a brawl with another fraternity chapter.

Down south, the TKE chapter at the University of Arizona lost its recognition from the university in 2012.

Why don't we expel Jarrett Maupin from Earth instead? Why is it whites can be made fun of all the time but not blacks? So sick of the double standard! jjv58 is so right. Get a sense of humor, people. And btw, am I the only one who can predict the righteous indignation of black leaders almost word for word when things like this happen? They are becoming caricatures and it's getting BORING. ZZZZZZZ  Oh, where was I? No one was being denied a job, a home, a vote here. If you can't take a joke in this day and age you might as well hang it up, BRO.

Good thing there`s no black comedians who base their whole acts on ridiculing white people, because THAT would just be wrong!!!! Oh wait......That`s ok?? It appears that would be just fine....................Either it`s wrong for everyone or people should just get over themselves and grow a sense of humor....

I don't think these pictures are going to help these kids get jobs, but really there doesn't seem to be any racial intent here.  Now what would REALLY be funning is finding a black frat throwing a "dress like white people" themed party.

Funniest thing I've seen since Blazing Saddles.

Tolerance
Tolerance

A few folks get together and celebrate MLk day with a private theme party? I don't care what their personal motivations or views are, but I see it as an attempt at humor and personal expression. For st patty's everyone is encouraged to dress up - a black person wearing green or putting on leprechaun costume, no problem, you won't see anyone complaining or feeling offended. White trash parties - hilarious. those don't make the news. For Cinco de mayo - put on a sombrero, wear a poncho...go nuts

The real ignorance is from people who think someone can't celebrate another's culture, on a day of celebration for that culture - in all it's glory, good and bad. C'mon, practice the tolerance you preach.

I'm not sure what the reverend thinks of Chris Rock or Eddie Prior or any comedian who jokes about racial differences. humor is not hate.

The reverend holds on to the past generational views on racism and unfortunately he will never realize MLKs dream because of his own deep seated prejudice, ignorance, and hate. I hope he finds peace at some point in his life, and comes around to a notion of personal accountability, rather then broadcasting his propaganda that makes race alone the foc point subverts the objective MLK strove for.

Individuality is what makes us human. Individual liberty and freedom of personal expression is what America was founded on.

Now as soon as an individuals actions becomes overtly hateful - takes on a tone of superiority/inferiority, is laden with expletives, or targeted hate directed at an individual, or manifests in violence, then an obvious line is crossed. That is real racial bigotry, racism, and is vial.

But until that point, recognizing those things - stereotypes if you will - that make us unique and finding humor in them, and discussing them openly without any hateful motives is a sign of tolerance.

The watermelon cup was creative - serve it at a bar or restaurant and it's a $10-$15 drink. Sports. Hip hop culture. Fashion trends. That is as mainstream as it gets.

From what I have seen, I don't condemn the people who went to the party as racist. Racially Insensitive?....well, ya...but only in the eyes of the hypersensitive

These young adults threw a theme party... outside of their pigment. What is this minister "assuming" theses young kids thoughts are.. did anyone bother to ask the young adults?? what their views are??? ("Heard it thru the grape vine") the game (telephone)... the minister wasn't even there. Stop the social media harassment and de-friend them if you have a problem. Beauty here in the USA is our Rights of Freedom and Equality which Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King was adamant each American would given no matter their pigment. Its reverse racism because social media is making their impute on what these few students  "Assumingly" were doing at this party. Theme Party. Social Media took it too far once again. God let kids party figure out themselves and let their parents and guardians student advisors set up at ASU!! handle it!!

Why is everyone saying "rich spoiled college students" about ASU? Because going to a good college and making a future for yourself makes you rich and spoiled? Wow, really........ Come onto campus on game night and say that, Sparky will fork your ass with a solid gold pitch fork...

Again , I am reading around on this story to try and also pin them with racist actions

but again, I see people joking around and as usual as Richard Pryor and many others could tell you

sometimes humor comes in different ways

AGAIN, IF THESE PEOPLE ARE FOUND TO BE EXHORTING HATE

THEN no defense for them

otherwise

They are being singled out for being white

ACTUALLY THEY MIGHT BE THE VICTIMS OF RACISM

The fact that they are white and guilty ,, that is racism

unless they are showing some kind of hate, were they screaming out racial obscenities ?

hailing the greatness of the dem led kkk?

if not, and they are showing bad taste or whatever, anything but racism

YOUR ASSUMING B/C THEY ARE WHITE

THEY ARE RACIST

THAT IS RACIST

to claim that these experiences were ‘reverse racism’ both diminishes and minimalizes the real and actual experiences of PoC who really do encounter racism. There is no system of oppression in America that actively works to oppress and subjugate white people. Sorry to break it to you, but your individual suffering is just that, individual.

La Toya Huggins I grew up in Lawndale Ca. on the boarder of Hawthorne, Gardena, and Compton.....Don't give me any of your "reverse racist and discriminating" garbage, (Definition of the the term "Cracker" Originally the white slave driver would "crack" the whip, hence the noun cracker. "Why the hell would my White arse want to bring harm to a community I love and have more in common with then not? I WOULDN'T! PERIOD!!!) .....like so many families in the 70's my daddy left me, brothers and my mother when I was only 6 years old, and yes my 2 brothers, mother and I went to live at Grandmas & Gramps 1000 square ft house and its was a predominantly BLACK COMMUNITY!!!( I never looked at a person and said "Hey that guys BLACK! ....stay away from him. In my family I would address all of my neighbors as Sir or Maam if I hadn't showed respect for everyone in our community my Grandpa would of beat the crap outta me.) When you say "dominant"(tuh) group is oppressed and disenfranchised" I can only laugh, you have no idea the hardships and struggles my family has endured, but we did it by the Grace of God, tenacity, and hard work! Trust me when I say that I to was harassed and placed in jail by "The Man" many times growing up, hell I was friends with most of the Gangsters in my neighborhood and the gangs I feared most were the Latino gangs like G13, not the Helen Keller Boyz or the Bloods & Crypts, all they wanted to do was get high and chase tail.....I remember walking home with my best friend "Victor" and remembering what "Dog Patch" was safe and which ones weren't....hell I was only a kid when I witnessed my first killing/ shooting and this was in the 70's! NO child regardless of color should have to see that kinda shit happen, PERIOD!!! This shit is NOT gonna change until everyone wakes up and realizes that it's everyone's problem, and it's EVERYONE'S FAULT!!! ACCOUNTABILITY!!! ....you posted, " please retreat back to the top of the food chain where it's safe" sorry dear, that place only resides in your imagination, hell I'd love to bring my "White Arse" and family there....but it doesn't exist. What I can say to you is this, the privileged White, Black, Brown and Yellow population equate to only 1% of the population. and they hate me just as much as they hate you not because of our color but because of our dispositions in life. In closing you said that I am trying to distract people with stories unrelated to this issue, the truth is, I WANT EVERYONE TO SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE, and I try to deal in "Facts and the Truth" to convey my message! I "creeped" your FB page and I saw that you grew up in Chino,CA. I know the area well, and I have to say that you grew up a Strong, Intelligent, and a Tenacious Black women from what I can see threw these "Facebook Goggles" in spite of your surroundings, I did the same.....I honestly feel that you and I have more in common than not, this is a extremely emotional issue for both of us and I can't and will not support the ASU students nor do I agree with their decision to throw their stupid "Racist" MLK party.....I will say this, as I have illustrated from prior posts.....one crime is shear stupidity and was meant to bring hilarity to our current issues with the racial divide (Although it was in very bad taste....), the other is violent, extreme, and even deadly one. I wish you and your family the very best, and Gods blessings. ~Ed

Well, it's a good thing you're not crying La Toya, hahaha. Tell that to all the people posting on here about it, because we both know it's not worth crying foul over. Better yet, go out and tell the Reverend Jarrett Maupin this ain't no thing and while you're at it, also tell the National Media that this is not worth covering, because obviously somebody is making a Big Stink about this supposedly 'MEDIOCRE' thing. Oh and you want to tell them about some civil rights issues that are going on right now that isn't really garnering any news coverage? Navajo-Hopi Tribal water rights are trying to be taken away from the tribes living along the northern border of Arizona along the Colorado river so that the water can be given to Large Corporations. Behind this National News issue worthy of being covered is US Senator John McCain and US Senator Jon Kyl. That's news worth hearing about. At least the Black Community aren't fighting for a basic necessity. Indigenous people are still fighting to this day over WATER and LAND that the government is trying to get their grubby little hands on. Giving up Water Rights affects those 2 tribes and would decimate the agriculture for those people. No water, no food. What's more news worthy now. Some Crazy Frat kids that had a Black Party or Water Rights being taken away from Tribes along the Colorado River. You need to read a little too La Toya. Oh BTW, unarmed black people aren't the only ones shot in the streets for no reason. It happens to Latinos here in the valley and dare I say it, White people too. Hell, a 50 yr old man was shot to death by a Scottsdale Police Officer while that man was holding his grandson back in 2012. Wow, a man shot holding a child. Did that make National News?? No. So your remark of "Only Unarmed Black People get shot" holds NO merit here. Learn a thing or two yourself before you post, because I can poke holes in your remarks all day long. Oh there's also news of a 2 Unarmed Latino Men that were shot and in Anaheim back in July one was fatally shot the other wounded. So you see? There are stories all over the web of Unarmed people being shot. It's not just Blacks being shot. Pay attention to the world, because there's more to it than just what's happening here in AZ.

@sweetliberty17761776  Nope.  Pretty sure that the assumption is that because they're doing obviously racist things that they're racist.

And current events tip:  The KKK and the Democrats had a bit of a falling out 50 years ago.   You might have heard about it....  The Civil Rights Act...  You know, the one where as LBJ signed it he remarked that the Democrats "have lost the South for a generation" (which proved optimistic).

Attacking Democrats for supporting the Ku Klux Klan is like attacking Republicans for being isolationists who want a small military: so outdated that the majority of voters weren't even born when it stopped being true.

Dear Meredith,

According to U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, you know, the ones that monitor the state agencies doing the check writing,  the TANF (Temporary Aid to Needy Families - which came in under Clinton) percentages of those on welfare by race, nationally (this will vary some state to state because of demographics), as of 2011 (didn't have the time to chase down 2012 and 2013 isn't out yet, but the numbers don't vary by a large margin) are listed below in descending order by percentage:

Black-39.8%
White-38.8%
Hispanic-15.7%
Other-3.3%
Asian-2.4%

What happened to the "WHITE people" receiving 40% more than any other Ethnicity???  I know, it's tough to get the numbers right when you pull them out of your a**...  Idiot.

@white.man.from.town dear young boy... you sound very uneducated, not saying you are but your comment portrays you as such: a foolish fool. Take an Origin of Species class and you might learn to know the truth of human exists that still co-insides with the creationistic beliefs. Aka: oh a lil help is mammals (type of species) in which human people are considered like "apes" dolphins and whales. And fyi God created the animals and Adam from the dirt. So yes we are going to have similar DNA and human traits within our mammal species.
