Phil Gordon Can't Quit Running Red Lights

Phil Gordon keeps making the same mistake.

The former Phoenix mayor knows that to make a legal, right-hand turn on a red light in Arizona, a driver must first come to complete stop. But he can't seem to make himself do it -- even after getting busted four times for the offense in the past five years.

While still mayor, Gordon drew attention from the press in 2008 when a red-light camera snapped him making a rolling turn at 7th Street and Northern Avenue. He left office at the end of 2011, just after landing a job helping lead the CSS Institute of Advanced Health.

He received a second such ticket in December, 2012 but it was dismissed. Another ticket on May 20 resulted in acquittal. Finally, he was convicted in late July for doing the same thing.

All of the tickets were 'cause of rolling right-hand turns on a red light, Gordon admits, and all of them were at the same intersection. (We're still waiting to hear back from Phoenix Municipal Court for verification, but we'll take Gordon at his word that he has the facts right.)

"I'm a bad driver," Gordon says. "Everyone knows that, and I acknowledge it."

Gordon got the 2008 and 2012 tickets dismissed after going to defensive-driving school. Sounds like he got lucky on the acquittal: While he and the prosecution were reviewing the video of the May violation, Gordon says, a city official noticed that a sign warning of the red-light camera had been plastered over with stickers by a vandal. Gordon says he didn't argue the point, and the city dropped the case on its own.

With no more lifelines, Gordon was forced to plead guilty to the July violation, pay a fine, and take eight hours of traffic survival school, a more-remedial and less fun version of defensive-driving school.

It'll probably only take a few more times before he figures it out.

Let him run them because maybe the next red light he runs will get him killed.

Is there a sign prohibiting right turns on red? If not, to put this story in proper context would require statistics on how many others have been caught by a camera making the same turn. And how many of those so ticketed responded to the ticket at all.

In other words, is Mr. Stern playing gotcha in a situation that even matters.

A rolling right turn on red is done how many times in Phoenix each day? My guess is at least thousands.

How many collisions between multiple vehicles or even pedestrians have taken place over the same period by those dastardly red light runners?

Merry Christmas, Infidels!

Maybe he'll learn when his latest wife complains because their insurance jumps-then again having known his last wife, we'll definitely be graced with more candid video of Phil in the future...

I read recently that Mr. Gordon would like to be mayor again. I would vote for him to run red traffic lights. He seems very good at it. I don't need to see what he might do as mayor a second time around.

@robert_graham so you think its okay to put kids and pedestrians in the path of harm just to teach Gordon the rules of the road or possibly for him to die? what kind of a fucking moron are you? when an idiot like Gordon drives like that the odds are he's going to hit or kill someone who was in the right of way. i dont want to see that happen to anybody and i dont get why you do. how many fatal accidents do you hear of where the other person was unscathed? there arent that many twit

Unfortunately it is usually a pedestrian that gets whacked when someone makes a rolling right at a red light.  People glance to the left, don't see anyone and proceed to roll right through the cross-walk where granny is crossing.

There does not have to be a sign stating the law.  A "California roll/ stop" is illegal in Arizona, read the ARS re: stopping at red lights genius.  It's real funny, how when a Republican wants to run for office all of you slaves complain how they should not run if they have broken any laws, yet when a democrat violates a law you make excuses for them.  Fuq republicans and democrats, and all of you dumb deaf and blind imbeciles.

Ummmm.... you should move to another state because you are very clearly an unhinged individual.  Exhibit A: you're reading an article about someone not stopping fully enough at a red light when making a right hand turn and subsequently LOSE IT on someone who is very clearly joking and who obviously disagrees with Gordon's actions the same as you.  Exhibit B: I don't think you could properly punctuate a sentence to save your life.

@FUQYU Seriously, Ray? I didn't say anything about Gordon. My critique was on the laziness of the write up. And it WAS a lazy write up. Merry Christmas, Infidels! :)

Totally agree, I see police do this CONSTANTLY, yet it's only ticketable when they catch an ex-mayor doing it.  But hey, it's Arizona, we have a slow news cycle, and as the old saying goes "Haters gotta hate......"
