Joe Fitzgibbon, Washington State Rep, Calls Arizona "Racist Wasteland" After Cardinals Win

racist-wasteland-tweet.JPG
Joe Fitzgibbon, a Washington state lawmaker, called Arizona a "desert racist wasteland" after becoming upset at the Cardinals' win on Sunday over the Seattle Seahawks.

"Losing a football game sucks," tweeted the 20-something at about 4:30 p.m. yesterday. "Losing to a desert racist wasteland sucks a lot."

Fitzgibbon, a Democrat, has managed to tick off a lot of Arizonans. But not everyone's upset, judging by Facebook comments we saw this morning like, "We resemble that remark!" and "If the shoe fits!"

Fitzgibbon represents West Seattle and Vashon Island. He's a boy wonder who graduated from college at 20 and, according to an article we read about him, shows "maturity way beyond his years." Which may be true -- except for the tweets he regrets publishing.

After realizing his comment had caused a firestorm, Fitzgibbons suffered a spinal collapse and deleted it. He then put out a non-apology with a second tweet, stating, "Upset re hawks loss, and failure of smart immigration reform--shouldn't have conflated the 2 though. Happy holidays, better for both in '14."

Click here for his contact page if you want to send him a Christmas card.

I look at all of my White American neighbors and wonder if they are one of the 51+% of voters keeping these racists (yes, plural) in office...Arpaio, Montgomery, Horne, Brewer, et al.  Their titles?  Sheriff, County Atty, State Atty, and GOVERNOR.

Remember racist Arizona was the only state to refuse to honor and respect Martin Luther King day.

Arizona has long been a magnet for the countries social misfits, ne'r to do wells dreaming of a race war, some joined the minute men, some swear they are tea partiers which is a insult to the real patriots of the Boston Tea Party who took a British ship, cargo of tea and did not take any women, children, elderly or veterans hostage not to mention threatening them harm but did harm civil servants who are citizens to the tune of 800,000, yes many social misfits come to Arizona least of them the white supremacists like the late JT Ready, Neo-Nazi, or the Minute men founder Chris Simcox aka pedophile, seems they have friends in high places which is not surprising since racists come in many segments of society, legislators, lawyers, sheriffs, just like drug addicts, pedophiles do not always come from the lower classes society class has no barrier to who can be a racist or pedophile, In Arpaio's own department deviants have been uncovered and a disgrace to his department, which might explain why 400 cases of sexual crimes go un-investigated! Yes Arizona has its problem, one can hope one day many of these social misfits and ne'r to do wells go back to where they came from  and cause their home states grief and misery!

@ Ray Stern:

This reader comment from the same thread that included the "Hitlerian" comment:

"As a Jew and as an environmentalist, I have never been more frightened as a free American citizen than I felt in that meeting chaired by Mr Fitzgibbon!"

Imagine how unhinged his constituents are when demanding a pothole be fixed or a stop sign replaced. LoL

I love this state, but at times I really hate my neighbors

Unfortunately, this guy is right. Look at our politics and voting records and this becomes clear.

At the same time, this can also be said about a majority of this country. America still has huge racism problems that it needs to deal with.

Arizona sure has a good image thanks to: Arpaio, Pearce, Thomas, Montgomery, SBJan Brewer, the Hate Group Pals of the above mentioned TYRANTS which include many Neo Nazi's, Racist Minute Men (even Child Molester Miunute Men) and lets not forget the Private Prison which they have ties to Brewer, ect. which Massively Profit from Arizona's Racism.

Vigilante's have ambushed and Murdered Hispanic;'s in Arizona with out even knowing if they are citizens or not, yet no investigation or any form of Justice for the Murdered Human Beings?!!

Arizona's "Law Makers" actually tried to pass a Bill to Fund Racist Vigilantes to Hunt Mexicans?!!

Sadly Fitzgibbon's comment was simply the truth in this era of Hate, and Profiteering from Hate.

To: Good, and Brotherhood, from Sea to shining Sea.

Fitzgibbon seems to have more in common with Arpaio than some of your readers realize.

He seems to be smart enough to know that Arizona is not really a racist wasteland, but he also knows that his political supporters feel that way, and so he'll promote the unfair stereotype in order to please his constituents.

I suppose he must have Maricopa County confused with many of the 'good' parts of the state. Otherwise, I have to agree with him. And, ironically and sadly, I live in Maricopa County.

@REALITY.CHECK Not exactly true. Arizona voters rejected the holiday in 1990.  In 1992, Arizona voters passed the holiday.  Wow, racism must have been rampant and overpowering for Racist Arizona to flip only two years later. smh

In Utah, the Holiday was not known as MLK day until 2000. Some other states celebrate(d) Confederate Generals on their MLK day.

The truth about Fitzgibbon is he is a privileged white, who has to play the race card in his favor to win his next election.  A privileged white boy who has no real world experience,from college straight into politics.  What he said is disrespectful to all non-racist residents of AZ, as well as to the Arizona Cardinals players and organization.  Last time I checked, the Cardinals had some quite talented players who are not white, but I guess they don't deserve his respect.

Does Arizona have racists?  Yes, racism is present within all ethnicities throughout the world and reasonable people do not accept it, it is a belief held in a minority of populations, therefore it does not represent the whole..

With Arpaio's high costs of law suit judgments your property taxes will be taking a big hit, I live in Arizona Pima County thank god most of the racists seem to live in Maricopa county since that seems to be what the majority of the voters in that county like to elect in a sheriff!:-) No one is moving because your unhappy, miserable enjoy them bills you get from all them Arpaio antics lost law suits!

fratdawgg23

@WastelandloverThe old dishonorable sociopath sheriff in Maricopa has cost county taxpayers over $50-million in lawsuit settlement payments  - plus the two settlements last week for $3-plus-million each - thus, over $56-million to date.

Arpaio wastes taxpayer money, plus his racist fanboys like you fellate him with compliments.

@DonkeyHotay@valleynative@shadeaux14

Less than 1/6 of the population of Maricopa County voted for Arpaio, genius.   That's less than 10% of the State's population.  Do you really want to accusing others of racism while at the same time judging an entire State based on one act by less than 10% of them?   Because that really makes you look like an idiot.

shadeaux14
shadeaux14

@valleynative

OK, then please explain why the MAJORITY of the county doesn't register and vote him out of office?

Perchance it's because a MAJORITY of the population of Maricopa County agree with his racist policies and practices?

valleynative
valleynative topcommenter

@DonkeyHotay@valleynative

only a fraction over 50% of the votes for Sheriff went to Arpaio.  A tiny fraction of the entire state, and yet you blame the whole state.  Bigot.

DonkeyHotay
DonkeyHotay topcommenter

@valleynative "You're still not understanding how elections work."

LOL! ... a MAJORITY of the VOTERS who cast ballots elected and re-elected that racist bigoted piece of shit Arpaio to represent the MOST POPULATED County in Arizona.

Too bad for you that your imaginary ghost "majority" is too fucking lazy to bother to vote, eh?

Reap what ye sow ... or fail to sow, sucker.

valleynative
valleynative topcommenter

@DonkeyHotay

You're still not understanding how elections work.

A majority of registered voters could show up and vote, and Arpaio could be elected, all without a majority of the voters, let alone of the population, having voted for him.

Not everybody in the County is legally able to vote.  There's no county as large as Maricopa in which every citizen is registered.  In the 2012 election, only a little over half a million people voted for Arpaio.  Any way you look at it, it's completely stupid to judge an entire State by 570,000 voters.

DonkeyHotay
DonkeyHotay topcommenter

@valleynative "That's still a majority of the votes"

Noted.

Sucks to have such a lazy "majority" of voters who don't even bother to show up at the polls to remove someone as repugnant, bigoted, racist and criminal as Joe Arpaio, don't it?

valleynative
valleynative topcommenter

@DonkeyHotay

Do you not understand how elections work?

A minority of the total population voted for him.

That's still a majority of the votes.  Just exactly how stupid are you?

valleynative
valleynative topcommenter

@DonkeyHotay

We'll add the word "so" to your "ignorance list", along with the fact that you do not judge even one County by the people who were elected by a minority of the population of that County.   To do so is the moral equivalent of judging an entire race by a very few.

Cozz

Bigotry is bigotry.

valleynative
valleynative topcommenter

@DonkeyHotay@valleynative

So I guess the answer to my earlier question is "yes", you have forgotten what your point was and have begun to make mine for me.

The fact that Arpaio was re-elected does NOT reflect upon the majority of citizens, and certainly not upon the totality of the population.  Unless you're a bigot, who judges groups based on the behavior of some members of that group.

DonkeyHotay
DonkeyHotay topcommenter

@valleynative ... ask that 4th grader to explain to you why votes for offices other than sheriff don't count in the selection of sheriff.

So once again -- for the FIFTH term -- that bigoted racist criminal scumbag Joe Arpaio did receive the MAJORITY of votes cast in a fair and democratic election.

Desert Racist Wasteland Indeed!

valleynative
valleynative topcommenter

@DonkeyHotay

This past election, as I said.

He won very slightly over 50% of the votes that were cast for the office of Sheriff, but that was less than half the number of people who voted.   Ask a 4th grader to explain how that can happen.

DonkeyHotay
DonkeyHotay topcommenter

@valleynative"(You do know that you don't need to have a majority of the votes to win, right?  You just need a plurality.  Ask that 4th grader.)"

You = Fucking Idiot

So which of the 5 (FIVE) terms that Arpaio was elected did he NOT receive a Majority of Total Votes Cast ??

Be specific, and show your work.

... then go ask a 4th grader to explain it to you.

DonkeyHotay
DonkeyHotay topcommenter

@valleynative "so his total vote count was not a majority of the total voter count."

Sucks to live in a democracy -- especially where the MAJORITY of VOTERS who do bother to show up at the polls habitually elect a lowlife vile bigoted racist scumbag to represent them -- don't it?

valleynative
valleynative topcommenter

@DonkeyHotay@valleynative

No, actually, not even that.  A third candidate drew some of the votes away, and many voters didn't bother to vote for the office of Sheriff (possibly believing that law enforcement offices shouldn't be political), so his total vote count was not a majority of the total voter count.

(You do know that you don't need to have a majority of the votes to win, right?  You just need a plurality.  Ask that 4th grader.)

However, even if you were correct, what would be your point?  How does that make the state a "racist wasteland"?   Or did you forget your point?

DonkeyHotay
DonkeyHotay topcommenter

@valleynative @DonkeyHotay

So racist bigoted vile Joe Arpaio was repeatedly elected by the MAJORITY of voters in Maricopa who actually bothered to exercise their right to cast a ballot.

Noted.

valleynative
valleynative topcommenter

@DonkeyHotay

Those 4 million people didn't all vote for Arpaio, genius, which means that you're unfairly judging a LOT of people based on the actions of a minority of them.

This is a pretty simple concept.  You're stereotyping, and that's disgusting.

DonkeyHotay
DonkeyHotay topcommenter

@valleynative ... the County of Maricopa has nearly 4 MILLION people -- 3.81 to be exact -- and those 4 MILLION citizens continually re-elect and support the racist bigoted repugnant policies of Joe Arpaio ... and the statewide voters ELECTED and support that wretched whore Jan Brewer .. the State of Arizona DESERVES the vile repugnant reputation earned by the politicians it elects to represent it.
