Don Stapley Payout for Sheriff Arpaio's Antics: $3.5 Million

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors didn't just settle with New Times' former top executives today -- the panel also settled with former Supervisor Don Stapley.

The county (or rather, its insurance company) will shell out $3.5 million to Stapley, who represented the east Valley on the board from 1994 to 2012 and infamously was arrested without good cause and smeared publicly by Sheriff Joe Arpaio and former County Attorney Andrew Thomas.

Stapley decided not to run for office again last year following his troubles.

The settlements today to Stapley and to New Times' former executives Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin nearly end the painful saga of "county craziness," as we call it. Still unfinished is the business of Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox's $975,000 disputed settlement. Concerns over how that settlement was made resulted in legal action now under consideration by the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Considering that Supervisor Andy Kunasek received his $123,000 settlement for legal fees, and now Stapley's on his way to his own fat check, Wilcox must be frustrated.

The public loses with the Stapley settlement -- because no Stapley trial will take place in January, after all. The settlement comes just after a devastating ruling in the case by U.S. District Judge Neil Wake, who ordered it to trial last month and rejected motions for summary judgment by Sheriff Arpaio and others.

It would have been a heck of show.

The U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals should double the amount owed to Supv. Wilcox for punitive reasons.  It seems that Sheriff Joe Arpaio has ordered the Republican Supervisors of Maricopa County to delay her payout as much as possible.

Andy Kunasek, Clint L. Hickman, Denny Barney, and Steve Chucri are a bunch of his cronies and suck up to him.

Good for Stapley.

Hopefully he's able to enjoy his retirement without the hateful old man gunning for him. I liked Stapley and thought he represented Mesa well.

If you thought the wiretapping of the Associated Press was massive, wait until you hear what the wiretaps reveal about the Phoneix New Times.  How dare you cry fowl about your cronies being arrested when it is you who spread all your lies and distortions against your opponents.  But let's see who gets the last laugh.  Don't tell me I didn't tell you so. Merry Christmas.

Looks like Arpaio has to cut down on them green bologna sandwiches, reduce them two meals a day to one to cover for his antics and save so much money for the the county he alleges saves!:-)

I am disappointed the will be no court case, I was looking forward to Arpaio stroking out on the stand.

Now this is quite a statement from Bozo Joke Arpaio, shows what a moron he really is.

CBS5 asked Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio about the growing number of lawsuits directed at his office.

"The message is - this is a business decision," said Arpaio. "You have insurance involved and that's the decison. I'm very happy with the way we run the Sheriff's office."

@robert_graham see twit, this is why we all think you are an idiot. you claiming that the New Times has been wiretapped..............who did it? was it MCSO? so you are either saying Joe is stupid enough to do something as illegal as wiretapping without a warrant, or you are telling us that somehow you have inside information of MCSO activities. if you really did have inside info as to MCSO activities (doubtful) and knew they had a warrant to wiretap the New Times phones...........well twit, then you just compromised an ongoing investigation. so which one is it twit, is Joe the idiot for tapping lines illegally or are you the idiot for blowing an investigation?  quite personally i think you both get the title of "IDIOT"

@Cozz If I recall correctly MCSO is covered for liability with a 5 million dollar deductible, per lawsuit. If so, then insurance has NOTHING to do with this as it's paid by Maricopa County, not the insurance company... so the Elderly Elected Official is once again spewing his mush.... Nothing new here.

I doubt the ninth circuit cares about these two settlements as they have nothing to do with the reason the ninth circuit is being asked to rule on the Wilcox debacle.

Actually danzig, Arpaio IS stupid enough to illegally wiretap.

I have concrete evidence that Arpaio wiretapped the BOS during the County Civil War. Robert here is just a clueless fool.

@TommyCollins@Cozz

Thats correct Tommy.

Because of Bozo Joke's continually liability, malfeasance and the 10's of millions (57 million+) thats already been paid out before this, the insurance company that insures Maricopa Nutward raised the deductible to 5 million 6 or 7 years ago.

@robert_graham @Flyer9753 the only crying little bitches are the dolts that keep electing arpaio because they think he upholds the law, then get their panties in a bunch every time its shown hes violated someones civil rights. It just happens to also define hypocrisy as an added bonus

Anyone who voted for the Old Fool is stupid.

However, Robert takes his stupidity to a whole new level. In the 9 years i've been reading and following NT, I have never come across someone nearly as stupid as Robert.

There have been some pretty dim people who post on this site. None are as evil and hateful as Robert Cozz.

YPS, if memory serves me Judge Neil Wake ruled ARS 11-626, the statute you cite, didn't apply because the County lawyers screwed up.

@yourproductsucks2 Yippy.  It's about the SETTLEMENT in that case!  "Wow."  that's all I can say....

She was awarded a SETTLEMENT in that case, and the AMOUNT of that settlement is being appealed!

yourproductsucks2
yourproductsucks2 topcommenter

the appeal to the ninth circus had nothing to do with Wilcox's grand jury indictment. it has to do with the back door manner she received her settlement and the circumvention of the board of supervisors in receiving that settlement.

have you been a mouth breather all your life?
