Two men have been arrested in connection with cockfights taking place in the backyard of their home near Seventh Street and Southern Avenue.

Ademir Avalos, 20, and his brother, Jesus, 24, face three counts each of animal cruelty, according to Phoenix police.

Cops report that they received an anonymous complaint about cockfights held Wednesday afternoon, and when they arrived, about a dozen men were watching and cheering as the birds attacked each other. When the spectators saw the cops, they scattered from the yard.

More than 130 hens and roosters called this South Phoenix chicken shack home.

The homeowners apparently are renting out their backyard to breed chickens destined for sale in Mexico. The men admitted that at least three cockfights took place on the property and that they knew bets were being placed, but they denied that any of the fighting fowl belonged to them, police said.

Cops seized several fighting-related items, including gaffs (metal spears attached to roosters' legs to maximize damage to feathered opponents) and a ledger for tracking bets. They also called animal-welfare officials, who recovered 132 roosters and hens from the property.

Mr. Gregg Stanton. Mr. Daniel Ortega Mr. Joe Arapaio et. al.

I urge you Gentlemen to cease and desist prosecution of citizens engaging on the ancient sport of cock fighting.

And I further urge you to drop any and all charges of animal cruelty against the defendants the Avalos brothers. I further submit that the Avalos be reimbursed from the general funds of the City of Phoenix/County of Maricopa for the slain birds and any supplies and equipment be returned to them or they be fully compensated at full value.

Might I remind you Gentleman Mr. Obama and the Obama Federal courts have ruled that diversity trumps moral obligation and constitutional imperative and prosecution of these individuals is contrary to the message that Mr. Obama and the Obama courts have articulated.

The Federal courts have clearly ruled that such diversity is protected in spirit by the Obama administration through the rulings of the Holder DOJ.

If its a tradition, its most certainly not in this country. If your going to support it, you do deserve either the choice to leave or not do it. But if you do it you should deservingly be punished. No Exceptions.

Puerto Rico is a territory (colony) (military base purposes) NOT A STATE..... look the way people lives in the USA when people obey and follows the rule of law and look the way people lives when they don't. ..example (yes look at Puerto Rico)...animal cruelty is just not right.

I am Hispanic also but we have to obey and follow the laws of the land...I personally do not like cockfighting (I personally think that people are cruel with the animals should be treated the same way and see what they think afterwards), it is not the same killing animals for food (because of nutritional needs and natural animal chain). If any other Hispanic people think that this is right just because we do it in our parents countries well I just have to remind you that also in those countries you don't have a right to trail (if they say you are guilty you are guilty), also they don't give a rat ass about you, (otherwise we wouldn't be here if it was it so much better in there)....just my personal point of view not need for hateful comments. ..thank u

You can't use one form of domination to fight another. In other words, you can't use racism to fight animal cruelty. All you are doing is perpetuating systems of oppression and domination. There are much better ways to tell people like Nicholas that their ideas are whack that don't come down to using their race/ethnicity/nationality against them.

You basically just said you see nothing wrong with animal cruelty and you are using tradition to suggest that this is ok. Wow. Firstly, if tradition were a good reason to keep doing something, we would likely still have slavery in the U.S. and women would be far worse off then we are now. So tradition, is not a useful argument at all to defend your point. Secondly, cock fighting is not ok because the animals you are using have no choice in the matter. You are setting up animals to hurt each other for your own pleasure and amusement. Not only is that selfish, it is based in domination. If you think dominating non-human animals is ok in this way, I can't help but wonder how you feel about the domination human animals (i.e. people). Thirdly, suggesting that we do to animals in slaughterhouses is worse, so therefore cock fighting is ok, also suggests complicity with animal cruelty. If you know that what happens in slaughterhouses is bad, why in the world would you use that idea to justify other forms of animal cruelty? Your use of logic on this one is all kinds of flawed. The key would be to abolish slaughterhouses and all forms of animal cruelty, not perpetuate it.

Cockfighting, dog fighting and bullfighting are barbaric. These acts are illegal here in the USA. Anyone who supports these acts of cruelty, should do jail time.

I'm Puerto Rican, this is legal in Puerto Rico and a tradition to many hispanics. We do plenty worse to birds in slaughter houses. I see no problem with cock fighting.
