A Phoenix man shot and killed three people Tuesday, including his estranged wife and teenage daughter, before killing himself, police say.

Michael Sanders, 53, shot them at the family's home near 51st Street and Thunderbird Road, according to Phoenix police.

Police say the victims are his estranged wife, 51-year-old Carol Sanders, his daughter, 14-year-old Audra Sanders, and his brother-in-law, 49-year-old Tom Fitzpatrick.

This is the third multiple homicide in Phoenix in the past month. On October 26, 56-year-old Michael Dante Guzzo shot and killed four neighbors before turning the gun on himself, according to police. Five days before that, police say 24-year-old Hector Taner Karaca -- who was just recently released from prison -- shot and killed two people at a Phoenix home.

More details to come on yesterday's shooting. Stay tuned for updates.

UPDATE 1 p.m.: Phoenix Police Sergeant Trent Crump tells New Times that the family had been involved in a court proceeding earlier in the day yesterday.

Another family massacred by a "responsible gun owner".Sure he needed those weapons to "defend himself",surprised the gun nuts aren't bleating that this could have been prevented if the family had guns too.

How does a parent kill their CHILD? I hope he rots in hell for that.Having problems with your wife,fine,i understand that's par for the course. I will never ever understand a parents taking their own kids life. Sorry just don't understand and will never.

Such a waste, when does the madness stop.

Sad stuff.

It's bad enough when a family is consumed by forces of nature, such as the typhoon in the Philippines.

When a man takes the life of his wife, her brother, and then his own daughter, there is no rationale. He simply could have walked down that very same alley and killed himself.

Sanders is the ultimate asshole. To his parents: Burn the son of a bitch and flush his ashes down the commode.

@Cozz

Maybe when society becomes as interested in preventing and treating the underlying mental illness as they currently are in reducing access to one particular class of weapon.

@_McShyster_ In your mind, would he have calmly walked away if he hadn't had a gun?   He burned his wife.  He was enraged and insane.  They would have been just as dead had he bludgeoned them to death, as is the case in more mass killings than involve "assault rifles", by the way.

@_McShyster_ News reports indicate he owned multiple weapons for 'home defense'. It's unfortunate none of the three victims had any defensive weapons. I wonder why the wife didn't call PPD and ask for a civil standby, given the hostile situation. We will never know.

@TommyCollins She was a senior administrator for AHCCCS. A good lady who genuinl;y cared about the people she served and worked with. She and her daughter and brother sure as hell didn't deserve this. I guess estranged wives should never go to their homes w/o a uniform present.
