Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton Pledges Every Homeless Vet Will Be Housed by Christmas

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton stood beside U.S. Senator John McCain earlier this week -- on Veteran's Day -- and pledged that every chronically homeless veteran in Phoenix will be housed come Christmas.

On Tuesday, the Phoenix City Council approved earmarking $100,000 toward getting the remaining 56 chronically homeless veterans off Valley streets.

We asked Stanton why tackling homelessness among veterans topped his political agenda, and he seemed puzzled by the question.

"These are people who have given so much to us, and now, they need our help," he says. "It's the right thing to do."

The mayor says it's just a starting point. He plans to apply the lessons learned and the strategies developed with this undertaking and apply it to end homelessness among the broader population of homeless individuals across the Valley.

Stanton has been working with an organization called Project H3 VETS in hopes of pushing Phoenix toward becoming the nation's first city to get a roof over every homeless veteran's head.

That organization consists the Arizona Coalition to End Homelessness, Phoenix VA Health Care System, Arizona Department of Veteran Services, Arizona Department of Housing, Valley of the Sun United Way, Community Bridges, City of Phoenix and others.

I know these guys . Hope to see things improving for them and the city to actually give the veterans houses and not just to line their pockets with the funds while talking to the media about how they are helping

To be so close minded about our troops is horrible. I've known too many people who have gone into the military to get out of a horrible home life & for hopes of a better future after they serve their time. For some, this was their only way out. Some didn't come home. Some came home missing their limbs. Some came home saving their best friend's lives, but can't get gruesome images out of their heads & have severe PTSD. People who disrespect our troops disgust me. It's just as bad as being racist. You're generalizing a group of people you don't know, but maybe if you listened to their stories you'd change your mind. If your mind's open enough that is.....

Honestly homeless is homeless... Some politician uses the word vets and it makes them sound like they're doing some heroic deed .... When the government is done with them they don't care about their house they don't care about their health very much when you're with services.. Mental or otherwise unless of course it affects them. The whole system is seriously flawed needs to be revamped..not going to hold my breath. They waste more than a hundred thousand just committee meeting to create more committees so I think this is b*******

When government says they're "here to help" you better hold on to your wallet.

It seems like to elevate certian homeless above others it discriminatory. Some people who may also be homeless may have tried to join the service only to find out their health won't allow it. It's the mental health of vets we ought to be fixing, then they can feel good enough and confident enough to be self sufficient

True story, many but not all vets are good humans. Perhaps there is a reason certian ones are homeless?

Tyburn Gallows don't blame or judge and certainly do not disresect the sacrafices they made on our behalf. the men and women that serve us...our freedoms..limited as they are... they do more then the politians that profit from the wars they start for these brave people to fight. So they can bank along with their corprorate cronies to make $$. It's the system ...it is severly flawed and designed to leave most young middleclass and worse off no choice but to join for shot at a college education ..If they are lucky enough to come home somewhat in tact. .mentally or physically. ......... Wow Reallllly....And 56 ......just 56?? They probably paid a group study more than a 100k to do a study on and investigate the # of vets "chronically"homeless oh and 'earmarked'...translated means slim chance it will reach the vets anytime soon. They will probably burnbup 78k to organize a panel on how to n how to dispense the funds. Eyeroll.

Why do they hate our heroes? Since you like killing for rich people, how about you go do it? Report back about how the Iraqis treat you, ok? Lol.

since you hate America, you should go there and ask them. See how you like getting shot at.

homeless or not, those heroes are the reason you have the right to be the total worthless ass you are.

You are an idiot Tyburn. First of all not every homeless veteran has killed someone in combat and second without our military veterans you wouldn't have the right to troll with your ignorance. DICK!

Something is seriously wrong when the mayor says there is just fifty six homeless veterans remaining in the city. I could go find that many without blinking. The number is much closer to 500.

How about we start with the homeless people who made the right decision and didn't go become mercenary murderers for hire in defense of American imperialism? We can get around to the vets if we have cash left over after that.

About time! It makes me weep to see them begging on the streets. That there are homeless at all is a travesty.

John McCain, you're a godamn US Senator. Introduce some national legislation to UNFUCK THE VA! WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU WERE AT THE VA HOSPITAL? How about the chronic nursing shortage? HAVE YOU SEEN THE NURSES RUNNING TO ISSUE MEDS ON TIME? Have you seen the crowded clinics? Waited four hours past your appointment? It's not the staff. It's the lack of staff. Take care of the shit on your plate FIRST! Let Stanton do his own fucking photo ops. You son of a bitch.
