Joe Arpaio's Thanksgiving Meal for Inmates Sounds Horrific

An unidentifiable food product that looks like prime rib compared to Sheriff Joe Arpaio's Thanksgiving menu.

It seems that inmates at Sheriff Joe Arpaio's jails will be going hungry this Thanksgiving, because the Turkey Day menu at gulag de Arpaio sounds absolutely inedible.

In years past, Arpaio used to make a song and dance about ponying up an extra six cents an inmate to serve them something that resembled a Thanksgiving meal. Not this year.

See also:
-Arpaio's Thanksgiving 2012

The main course of this year's meal is something called "turkey soy casserole." (Recall that Arpaio forced the inmates into vegetarianism a few months ago.)

We tried to Google "turkey soy casserole recipes" and came back with nothing of the sort. Inmates who say prayers before meals may want to consider using that time to pray for their own safety.

Whatever "turkey soy casserole" is, inmates are getting five ounces of it.

As always, keep in mind that many of Arpaio's inmates haven't been convicted of crimes (something about a presumption of innocence).

You can see the rest of the menu below, which also sounds disgusting, when you think of the jail-caliber equivalent of the real food items.

If it's any consolation, MCSO's calculations are that each of the Thanksgiving meals this year are 12 cents cheaper than last year's, which could make for a savings of around $1,000, depending on how many inmates are in there.

That almost starts to make a dent in the millions upon millions of dollars Arpaio's cost taxpayers in lawsuit settlements, legal fees, a trip to Hawaii, and other garbage.

Oh my goodness.  These 'alleged' offenders are being made to eat yukky food.  How horrible.  I'm sure they're all innocent as a newborn babe and spend their evenings polishing their halos & fluffing their wings.

Gimme a break.

I've managed to spend 54 years on this earth without ever being handcuffed, without ever seeing the inside of a jail cell, and without ever taking a ride in a cop car.  I'm sure these fine, 'innocent', upstanding citizens are just misunderstood & wrongfully accused.  That's why they're locked up waiting for justice (as opposed to being out on bail waiting for justice).

Like someone else said, it's freaking JAIL, not the Hilton Hotel.  It SHOULD be unpleasant.

LOL. If you are that into the show you would be aware the Doctor lies, condemns and has killed. Judging by the other comments you left you obviously have issues. It's likely you are probably so opposed to this food because you have probably experienced it first hand. To be honest that slop is too good for you, bitch.

as long as they arent malnourished and the food doesnt make them sick feed them on the cheap its is prison not a holiday inn I personally would like as little of my tax dollars going towards feeding criminal as possible. they are humans and deserve basic human rights but lets not forget the are being punished

The old sociopath Jose Arpaio gets away with his cruel and unusual antics because Maricopa county has enough voters to re-elect him who conflate "vengeance" with "justice" - as do many people in America. The lawandorder and moral scolds sit atop their high horses fapping to news of people being mistreated for even the most minor offenses. Of course, they are outraged when similar mistreatment finds its way to their doorstep; then it is an injustice.

Why is ANYONE complaining about this?!? Speaking as a convicted felon, who served 6 years, THESE CLOWNS ARE IN COUNTY EFFING JAIL! They get what they get. If you want to live well, and eat well, STAY OUT OF JAIL! Get a job, pay your taxes, and quit doing illegal shit! Sheriff Joe is right on the money with this one. I applaud everything he does to make life a little harder for criminals. Jail isn't supposed to be comfortable! I hated my time in jail, it was miserable, and that's why I stopped breaking the laws... I DIDN'T WANT TO GO BACK!

Good. Most of those criminals should be swinging from a rope. What about the families whose family members were killed by these guys not having any dinner at all? Evidently we have more compassion for the criminals than their victims. The posts against Joe here are disturbing

Really?  Seriously?  And we are supposed to care about this.....why?  Are you at all cognizant of the real issues of the day Matthew?  As far as I am concerned they can have nothing but crusts of old bread.  Other than Sweden we are the only country who makes sure that prisoners have better living conditions than law abiding citizens.  Are we supposed t foot the bill for a whole turkey dinner for these losers?  Even if you did not actually commit a crime the chances are very high that you were in the vicinity which makes you culpable.  If you dont like the dinners stop coming back.  Stop doing whatever you do to get into jail to begin with.  No sympathy here.

Arpaio has all the signs of a sexual sadist, his love of seeing men in pink undies, any half wit psychologist would have a field day with that one of him and his fans who agree with him, this tells more than anyone might imagine, another famous toughest law man in America had a secret in his closet J. Edgar Hoover, his in public tough guy image covered up his deep deviancy, so my guess is deep down Arpaio has some twisted thought processes! In a bygone era he would have likely worked as the chief torturer for some lord or baron, and had a torture chamber/dungeon to play with!

enigma9000aa
enigma9000aa

In a bygone era and under the Warren court Arpaio could not get away with what he does today, only because the GOP has packed the majority on Supreme court does the sadists in our society find the blind eye to do what these lowest of the human gene pool who call themselves sheriffs, politicians exist, in another time and era they would be stopped cold but alas there is always the final judgment, Jesus will in the end give them their eternal due!

"Does one suppose there is a correlation between our poor hungry citizens and the increasing numbers we are incarcerating? A civilized society does not deny humane treatment of fellow humans at no costs to its social values. Have we as a nation abandoned our social values to the inherent greed and promotion of greedy individual rights? Being that such sociopathic treatment of people by Arpaio obviously brings a warm glow to faux christians and those on the political right puts much for us to question on this day of Thanks."

food often sits out for hours before it is served to the prisoners.  can you imagine this in tent city in the summer?  when my former husband was on work furlough I used to beg him not to eat the jail food on his day off from work.  we spent an enormous amount of money on his canteen account so he could eat safely.  when money is put on a prisoner's books the first $30 every month is taken, ostensibly for the cost of meals.  so unless family or friends on the outs have a lot of cash to throw away prisoners can't even get prepackaged food or vitamins.

I don't believe that a person's legal status should be a factor in receiving safe, nutritious food.

@oxdriver  LIKE WHAT HAPPENED TO MS.POWELL. Left outside, inbox caged like a dog ,for 4 hours. When dead her body temperature was 108* degrees. Her body full of blisters.

She was there for a for an auto mobile infraction.

Nobody was put on trial. A woman was killed. Neglected in the sun ,basically in a dog house.

We don't leave our pets outside in that kind of heat. I'm shocked at the death count "body count " of the prison!!

Anyone that believes that was ok ,at all is sick.

It has to stop.

@oxdriver I completely agree with "valey native" the difference was and is.... You as a person were convicted. or is that hard to understand?? Prisons get better food than the people in the MSCO so at least you ate real food. and were not forced to eat nasty ass foods.

valleynative

@oxdriver

The difference is that you were *convicted*  Many in Tent City are accused but not convicted.

We're not supposed to be punishing people before they're proven guilty.

danzigsdaddy
danzigsdaddy topcommenter

@dstinnettusa not every one there has been convicted of a crime and not all of them are murderers. evidently we have no compassion for people who may or may not be innocent. an accusation does not make them guilty and an arrest does not mean they have the right person. since we have a county attorney who wants to be able to suppress evidence that could prove someones innocence, we evidently are locking up people who are innocent.............wheres your compassion for the wrongfully accused? the wrongfully accused are also victims and we are standing up for them by protesting the treatment of them as guilty individuals until their guilt has been established

@ConcernedCitizenAZ

There was a time when the wealthy and the large corporations competed to see who could be the most philanthropic.   They built libraries and hospitals and universities.   Even citizens with moderate incomes gave more to charities, because it made them feel good about themselves.  Those who received the help were grateful, because they knew that the assistance was coming from people who cared, and so they tried to get back on their feet so they could pass the favor along.

But then Congressmen saw that they could collect more taxes and increase their own power by "doing good" while at the same time making more people dependent upon the goodwill of those same politicians.

As a result, those who used to give from their own pockets are resentful that Congress is taking their money away to give to the poor, and those who receive the help know that it's not coming from people who chose to help them, but rather is their legislated "entitlement", so they are not grateful and, in fact, have an incentive to game the system and take as much as they can.

The problem lies in the abuse of power by Congress.  Not in the corporations or the right.

fratdawgg23
fratdawgg23

@ConcernedCitizenAZ - Too many people have been conditioned to yield personal rights, or the collective rights of We the People, to Corporations. That has indeed harmed U.S. society, contributing to the growing Empathy Deficit.

@belliijellii @oxdriver One of the records we Americans hold in the World is, Highest Incarceration rate, Highest tax spent on prisons, Certain things should not be criminalized to ease the jail burden, like drugs or Cannabis, that's not to say to make it legal, but to de-criminalize it, stop locking people up for petty non-violent offenses such as possession. The war on drugs is a failure.

Under that logic, after you get arrested, but before you are proven guilty, you should just hang out in a cushy waiting room with color tv, and steak dinners... All on the tax payers dime. In my opinion, and experience, eating shitty food in jail isn't a punishment, its a side effect of being in jail. The argument here is getting off topic. If you are an innocent person in jail, then the quality of your turkey dinner is the least of tour worries.

The trick is to EAT turkey yesterday---not become one.  That is NOT what I said.  A fight goes down in a bar, everyone is taking swings.  Someone gets arrested because they were seen taking a swing--maybe not connecting but they were there and participated....so no.  People are always places they should not be doing things they should not do.  Then when they end up in jail its all about them.....too bad. No sympathies that they are in jail.  I am sick and tired of mental midgets such as yourself going through life deciding yoiu can do whatever the hell you want to do with no consequences.  YOU are part of the problem....and apparently have also been in jail.  Again--I simply do not care what inmates eat or don't eat.  I have busted my butt working for years and am sick of inmates and convicts demanding 4 course meals. Get over yourself.

We've been conditioned to yield responsibility to the government.

People used to take care of themselves and of each other.  Now that's all the responsibility of the government.

@danzigsdaddy

I agree. Just the word " PRISONER" - tells the tale, of what they believe as far as innocence.

Before proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.. This has been going on since the 1800's.

In fact, that the word PRISONER tells a lot ,I got from ready the trial of the USA 's first serial killer, Herman Mudgett  aka H.H.Holmes trial.1896.......nothing has changed. Except for public execution.

I'm not so sure the people of AZ, wouldn't mind hanging Jodi Arias.

They are in a purposeful FOG of hatred.

While the media is making money off your state. The LDS churches are bribing justice, bribing the political process. They have you distracted on this trial.

Behind the veil ,you will a flashlight to find the truth.

People of AZ, take back your beautiful state.

Wake up , clear the fog... watch what the big guys are doing. Slimming around ,while your all busy hating JAA.

@valleynative if we just start punishing people before they are found guilty, we are undermining the whole judicial system. its the same way the salem witch trials, McCarthyism and a few other things ended up the way they did. if we punish people just on an accusation or assumption..............the law is no longer protecting people. if even the innocent are being punished,  it isnt justice anymore, and according to how the law is supposed to work, they are innocent until proven otherwise. if there were no wrongful convictions or false arrests, why is Montgomery so against releasing information or evidence that could establish peoples innocence? i see what you are saying and agree, i just dont get why other people cant see it. you and i agree..............punish the guilty, but lets find out if they actually are guilty before handing out that punishment.........otherwise we are punishing the innocent as well as the guilty

No, you're not seeing the actual logic, you're just making things up and pretending to believe that it follows my logic.

In reality, there is a lot of room for reasonableness between serving crap and serving steak.

Our justice system assumes that there will be innocent people in jail.   You understand that, right?  Otherwise, what would be the point of trials?

danzigsdaddy

@joysie this doesnt make sense. in the earlier post you are saying that the inmates (many of which have not been proven guilty) deserve no sympathy and put themselves in that situation by being in the area where a crime occurred, then you say you volunteer to help people who need food or are indigent. both are groups of people where according to you they put themselves in that situation.  both groups have people who have fallen victim to circumstance, and both have people who could have prevented the situation they are in. until they have been proven guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt the inmates are supposed to be presumed innocent. why should they be punished as if they were proven guilty before they have been? if that were how we were supposed to treat everyone, why are you helping people who may or may not be in their present condition because of things like drug abuse? thats why some of those same people that actually ARE convicted are in there for. and before you start in with how i probably do nothing to help others, I do make regular charitable contributions, food donations and i even have provided free services to the needy in my line of work in A/C

This is what the guy before me had to say:  At first I thought it was crude but now it seems to match people like you.  Read into what you want.  Frankly I could not give two shits.  People live in the streets and children and babies have no bed to lay their heads and when they do go to sleep their little bellies are empty.  For the past 25 years I have done a ton of Volunteer work.  Thats irght.  Spending a hot dirty tired Saturday working for people I do not know for no pay.  I have been on the news more times than I can count.  On holidays I take gifts and food and treats to those working the front gate of Luke AFB.  Other than smoking meth and feeding your fat face what do you do?  You sit around watching those stupid reality shows waiting for the game to come on.

"Give them bread and water 24/7.  If they want protein, they can suck off their cell mate!!!"
