10 Worst Snowbird Driving Habits

Categories: List This

2.) Driving slow/scared to death in the HOV lane

This might be news to some people, but having a passenger in the car doesn't force people to drive in the HOV lane. This is especially problematic when there's heavy traffic, and the only thing holding up the HOV lane is a snowbird who's absolutely scared to death. With a dozen cars behind them, and nothing in front of them but open road, they'll drive at 50 mph. Again, there's nothing in front of them, but they continue to punch the brakes due to a fear of what's going on in other lanes. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

Not related to driving, but seriously a group of snowbirds qre going to force me to give up my dog because literally he barks, not constantly, but maybe 2-3 times a day when home alone. Please someone just make them go away!! Ugh. chicagoans are seriously not used to their petty and quite frankly, elitist attitudes.

I know this sounds "bitchy", but you know what is almost as annoying as schitty drivers(?), clicking after each point in your list. Put 'em on one phukking page. Let me guess, you get some sort of ranking for more page clicking? Sick bastards.

You should do a story on how much money snowbirds actually bring to Arizona's economy.

Honest question: Is New Times staff working on a way to cut down on the number of pages you have to go through? I know you all need revenue since you provide a free service. It seems you use a ton of ways to analyze our browsing history (via plugins that show this such as Ghostery) and get ad clicks but there has to be a way to get more content on less pages. It's an experience that turns me off personally when visiting your website.

#9 is wrong. You can turn left from the reversible lane when headed southbound in the AM and when headed northbound in the PM. You just can't turn left at the lights. You should go recheck the signs in those lanes before causing unnecessary confusion.

Snow birds are a pain in the ass pure and simple.

OK but all that is nuthin compared to SWers comin north for snowy holidays. Heck I lived in El Chuco they got a inch of snow, almost closed the town and anyone driving was going 25.

Actual bumper sticker I saw shortly after I moved to AZ:

"If it's Snowbird Season, why can't we shoot them?"

Slow != safe! Know this and get to understand why it's true. What is safe driving? Predictable motions. Always driving in a pattern that is obvious and clear in intention to other drivers. Signalling at appropriate times (not too early so as to be confusing, not too late so as to be pointless), merging the bike lane as any other lane of traffic, driving precisely the speed limit unless your vehicle cannot safely do so due to load or you're on your way to the mechanic, yielding the lane to faster traffic, going to the next street/exit when you can't accomplish getting the one you meant to in a safe amount of time, etc. Being predictable and communicative is how we all stay safe.

Driving slower than the bulk of traffic actually creates a more dangerous situation with all the people making lane changes to get around.

You forgot illegal lane changes when there is more than one lane turning. And running red lights.

Conspicuously missing: inexplicably coming to a complete stop to make a right-hand turn. When I first moved to Arizona, I almost ran into so many people because I had never experienced someone stopping just to make an unobstructed turn.

This isn't just snowbirds.  It's people that learned to drive from their parents and not from driver's ed.  They are not taught the basic rules of the road, just the bad habits of their parents.

These bad habits are not limited to our Winter visitors...

You're right...anywhere. I live in Albuquerque now and it does happen sometimes. Although the traffic here isn't so bad.

I have less issue with the traffic problems they contribute to on the roads and more with the traffic problems they contribute to in the damn grocery store.

Kacie Rollins, this is why Arizonans are so rude, they read hatemongering crap like this.

With a little patience, common sense, and compassion, we can all respect other drivers regardless of their home state or age. I would much rather share the road with someone who is being slow or cautious, than risk my life or someone else's by getting pissed. People always want to "teach people" how to drive in Arizona by being a total a-hole. I just liked this page last week, but all it does it bitch about snowbirds.

if you aren't tailgating then these scenarios are meaningless.

No one drives as bad as the texting locals.  those cars that don't go when the light turns green making you wait at the light twice in rush hour... they are texting!

@Debra Baum I'm not sure the bad supermarkets habits are confined even to Arizona, let alone snowbirds.  Everywhere I go it seems as if all shoppers think they are the only customers in a store.

@teknik You'd hate our town.  Peeps stop on side streets to yak car to car.  But noone cares in a town of 12 thousand I guess. Oh and all you Zonys that come north for the winter holidays it's easier than it looks, just be careful braking.
