Tom Horne Not Budging on Tuition for DREAMers

Activists declare Attorney General Tom Horne a cheater.

Attorney General Tom Horne does not seem the least bit interested in dropping his lawsuit against the Maricopa County community colleges, in Horne's bid to keep DREAMers from getting in-state tuition rates.

Horne agreed to meet with a dozen activists at his office yesterday, and after he refused to budge, the activists were asked to leave, and one was arrested.

These same DREAMers -- young people who were brought to this country illegally when they were young -- who have been granted deferred action by the Obama administration, have also been prevented from getting driver's licenses, thanks to an executive order Governor Jan Brewer. Several other states are allowing these DREAMers the ability to get a license or pay in-state tuition.

Ten members of Citizens for a Better Arizona (the people behind the successful Russell Pearce recall and attempted Arpaio recall) were arrested protesting at Horne's office last week, but Horne agreed to meet with them yesterday.

After a couple minutes, it was fairly clear that Horne wasn't really open to the idea of dropping the lawsuit. He claimed he was "just enforcing the law" -- a tired excuse around here, often used by the elderly county sheriff -- although there's nothing forcing him to pursue the issue and keep the lawsuit.

DREAMers and educators pleaded with Horne, to no avail.

Molly Duran, of Citizens for a Better Arizona, told Horne that he was "cheating the students" with this lawsuit.

Another member asked how anyone's supposed to trust Horne to enforce the laws given the multiple times he's skirted the law.

Eventually, protesters unrolled a poster that said Horne cheated the students, cheated on his wife, cheated the voters, and cheated the law.

Horne was about done at that point, and the protesters were told to leave. Carolyn Cooper, a CBA member, was arrested for refusing to leave.

Stephen, you forgot that he hired his "inner circle" from his last job and not only gave them prominent positions that they had ZERO qualifications for (thus putting cases and the office of AZ AG in jeopardy), but gave them top salary to do so! Then, when a FOIA is put forth, he provides a code, NOT the salary, of said employees. Thus further thumbing his nose at the law.

Piss on Horne.

He was the lesser of two evils for the Republican candidate (does anyone really want to know what that mentally unstable fool Candy Andy would have done had he been elected AG?)

Makes me glad I supported Rotellini. I will continue to support Rotellini and I believe she will be elected AG while Horne is disbarred.

So-called "DREAMers" are America's fifth column. They will only advocate in order to open our borders completely.

Say no to the DREAM, it's actually an American nightmare.

Horne would do well to drop his Dreamer objections. Doesn't he have enough trouble already? And now we learn that according to AZCentral, he is appealing the court order to refund the $400K in illegal campaign contributions to a supposedly independent group of supporters of his candidacy in 2010. When all of his legal and ethical issues come to a head, he just may have to resign and/or bow out of his quest for guv'nor.

Horne should be behind Bars!

Hit, and Run?!

Thieving Campaign Money?!

Horne is a Felon, any one else would already be behind Bars!

This S.O.B.criminal should be held to atleast the same standards as the people he has thrown in jail, or perhaps higher?

To: Arizona Corruption.

I may not agree with Tom Horne generally, but i do agree that illegals are not eligible for our tuition rates. they should pay the same tuition as folks from other countries do.

Mr. Horne will continue this charade simply to get votes from folks such as Robert Graham. Unfortunately for Mr. Horne, he will not make it past the primary because of Independent voters who will vote for his opponent in the primary and then will vote FOR Felicia in the general election. The Roberts of this world won't know until six months or so after the election how this all came about.

I'd be damned if I'd get arrested while Parraz stood on the sidelines and cheered me on!

The taxpayers have made a years long investment in getting these children educated. And now we want to toss them out? Makes no sense. Horne is more interested in grandstanding in the Federal courts using the taxpayers as his bankroll.  Is he driven by power and money than the common good which all benefit from? Vengeance, bigotry, racism and hatred drive Arizona policy and laws. Shameful.

Don't they realize they can get driver's licenses, in-state tuition, and work permits in California? that state is offering everything they demand. I understand its their time to waste and they can waste anyway they want but its a losing battle trying to convince our citizens that they should get in-state tuition while being in the state illegally and every one else who lives in an other state has to pay out of state tuition its just not fair. THEY ARE NOT BEING DENIED A COLLEGE EDUCATION THE JUST HAVE TO PAY FOR IT

By the time the legal bill for fighting this is handed to the tax payers, Horne will have cost us more by fighting this than simply allowing Dreamers the same opportunity of others that haven't  lived in Arizona nearly as long. This shows the stupidity of catering to Tea Party extremists that run the Arizona GOP.

And he shouldn't budge because Obama's work permit doesn't include lower tuition.  I want lower gas and food prices but am I automatically entitled to it? No!  Just because you want something doesn't mean you'll get it.

@DNichols Well said. You understand how Arizona's top prosecutors operate, who have absolute immunity and NO accountability = tyranny.

@gpscentral "I'd be damned if I'd get arrested while Parraz stood on the sidelines and cheered me on ".  Would you do it if Galindo was the one protesting at Horne's office, Gail ? Oh my bad, Galindo would never protest at Horne's office. If he did that would mean that Horne would never again appear on Galindo's show and have the opportunity to answer softball questions.

@john043012 All of those things they are 'demanding' makes them a more viable future citizen. It means they (1) have a way to get to work (2) pay vehicle license fees and taxes (3) pay state and federal income taxes (4) pay into retirement and social security plans and (4) if they attain a college education they are likely to make more money and pay more taxes than those who have no formal education. The more they pay into taxes the more the state and federal revenue streams increase and the fewer tax increases will occur. This means that at some point it's very likely they will be supporting you and me in our retirement years. Capish?

@Bnbk @gpscentral Negatory Bnbk, I wouldn't get arrested for anyone cheering me on. What Carolyn had was one of those orgasmic activist moments where you throw caution to the wind. You're joking about Galindo never protesting right. I don't think we made it to Horne's office because we were busy everywhere else. Would you care to see the photo albums? As for this morning's show, Tom Horne was quite late which really cut into the interview. You must not have listened to the whole interview if you think the questions were softball. Carlos had Arpaio on too and didn't ask softball questions. However, I'll tell him you were listening, that always makes his day.

@TommyCollins we are told driving is a privilege not a right and sure as hell not a necessity. It seems we have millions of citizens who lost their privilege to drive who have to be inconvenienced by having to use mass transit to get to work so your driving argument I don't buy as far as educating those people I feel by being mandated to pay for their EL,HI education out of my tax dollars is more then sufficient. their parents are never mentioned in any out of pocket expense for any of their children's needs .

@TommyCollins @john043012

If someone is coming from CA or MI to Arizona for college and is paying out of state tuition, how does it make sense that someone here illegally has more privileges and rights than citizens from another state?? Same thing goes for international students who spend time and money to come legally and end up paying out of state/international tuition. By this logic, it makes more sense to cross the border illegally and get all those benefits than do everything right and legally. Which behavior are you trying to incentivize? You say "but they were kids". Why shouldn't then other parents bring their kids here illegally if they know they will get free K-12 education and cheaper college education than if they did it legally?
