Rick Renzi, Former Arizona Congressman, Gets Three Years in Prison for Fraud, Corruption

Rick Renzi
Former Arizona U.S. Congressman Rick Renzi was sentenced today to three years in prison following his June conviction on fraud and corruption charges.

The sentence was a long time coming in this classic case of congressional corruption, but Renzi, a Republican, will finally be doing some hard time. New Times was the first to expose Renzi's disgusting dealings in a 2006 article that preceded his 2008 indictment.

Arizona U.S. District Judge David C. Bury sentenced Renzi in a Tucson courtroom Monday, October 28. Renzi's buddy, real-estate investor James Sandlin, also found out today he'll be serving 18 months in the Big House himself.

Sarah Fenske, ex-New Times reporter who's now the editor of the LA Weekly, wrote of Renzi's blatant acts of land-dealing and bill-making that earned him and Sandlin millions. It's really amazing these guys thought they could away with this. As Fenske's article explains, Renzi sold land to Sandlin in a cash deal that funded Renzi's successful 2002 campaign for Congress.

After being elected, he sold the remaining interest in the land to Sandlin. Then he floated a bill in Congress that would have authorized a land swap in which the federal government would trade public land for the Sandlin property. A week after Renzi's proposal became public, Sandlin sold the land for a tidy profit.

The evidence during the trial also showed that Renzi had embezzled money from his insurance company clients to fund his first election.

Renzi won two additional terms but declined to run for a fourth following his 2008 indictment.

Only 3 years??? Perhaps this scumbag will get to share a cell with a 300-pound black man named Bubba.

Renzi is the face of the insanity that hit Arizona during the Housing boom and bust, as Symington was in the previous boom and bust. When the real estate industry ran everything in this State, they rammed through all the hocus pocus legislation (the eminent domain and land speculator guarantee act, for example) and the State paid the price in the bust. From Kingman to Flagstaff to Sierra Vista, Renzi left a trail of land development ambition that is a model of a disfunctional economy based on land consumption. But will Arizona learn this lesson finally? It's doubtful.

If Renzi were Democrat you wouldn't be saying a word would you? Will you talk about it when the President is indicted for Treason?

Yeah, & I'm sure he will still get his 300,000 per year for EARLY RETIREMENT...Or some sort of excuse to keep the money flowing....

Only three years? That will give him plenty of time to get out and run for office again.  Heck, in Arizona we seem to think if a candidate hasn't been at least indicted, then the person doesn't have  enough experience to be a politician here!

@robert_graham Good grief, Jaffy!  You are only concerned because that drone could be packed in your ass instead of being used to spy on the public.  Go back to your public toilet and leave us alone

@robert_grahamEmbezzlement and shady dealings that screw the taxpaying public are always punishable, whether it's a dirty Democrat or dirty Republican. This is an ethical issue, not a political issue. There are bad apples on both sides, most rational people understand that. Speaking of being rational, our president is a US citizen who's Christian and spent decades building his political career, and has demonstrated throughout his career that he legislates bills to improve communities and quality of life. Whether he's doing a good job of running the country is a matter of opinion, but treason? Really? What proof do you have? How come no one said our "liberal" president Clinton was a Muslim terrorist? Skin color have anything to do with it? Hmm?

@Marco Cruz what we need is to get the BOARD OF NURSING , members off to the DOC,  and their lying leader, Ridenour.

and the Medical board director not only fired but sent off the the DOC, for corruption.

and using your tax dollars to do it.
